If you were suddenly made a benign dictator of your country, what rules would you bring in?

Red trousers banned for men.
Good call.

starzig · 05/01/2019 00:00

Ban dogs, Stop benefits and make education free.

AlmostGrockle · 05/01/2019 00:08

I'd reverse the cuts to the police, make sure there was a police presence in every area of the country, and that existing laws were being enforced before I brought any new ones in.

Wrong thread

JaneJeffer · 05/01/2019 00:21

Very apt for this one though Ewlts

Lollicent · 05/01/2019 00:21

Put a limit on the wages of footballers and media folk.

Graphista · 05/01/2019 01:11

Just seen on FB copied from huff post but still

"By lunchtime, leading CEOs will have pocketed more than average worker will get for entire year."

Snugglepumpkin · 05/01/2019 01:49

If I ruled, instead of councils paying out housing benefit to landlords, they would underwrite mortgages so that the tenant would have the right to live in the house until death, at which time the house would become council stock unless the tenant had purchased it from the council for the price the council paid for it (i.e. including interest)

I would also impose an annual tax of 10% of the current market value on 2nd( or any multiple) homes which are not lived in by the owner for 50% of the year.
So tired of seeing villages & their local economies die so people can pop in for the occasional weekend in their country getaway.

I would make a law that any employer taking on an employee on a zero hour contract would be legally obliged to guarantee that employee receive as a minimum the equivalent of 16 hours x minimum wage as a retainer if the hours are not worked that week.

I would rule that designing a curriculum to teach children should be a job reserved for TEACHERS who actually teach children, not 'educational professionals' who did their phd etc... but never actually had to deliver a curriculum to a group of children.

I would also ban the colour orange because I just don't like it.

Graphista · 05/01/2019 02:01

Snuggle - yes I've never understood why govts refuse housing benefit to homeowners when it's clearly cheaper to pay their mortgage (possibly with a repayment clause when they die) than it is to make them move and pay rent!

DPotter · 05/01/2019 02:10

I would ban umbrellas - get a coat with a hood and stop poking me in the face with your umbrella.

starzig · 05/01/2019 02:20

Oh. I'm voting for you dpotter

paulstearne · 05/01/2019 08:34

I'd start by repealing all religious privilege, abolishing faith schools and removing the monarchy.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 05/01/2019 08:58

I think some of you would be happier living in Communist China with your draconian ideas!!! I would ban football and mobile phones!

Willbeatjanuaryblues · 05/01/2019 09:06

I would plough far more money and attention into early years education and get loads of people who can assists and help with children who have mental health issues, for all reasons but mainly for the those with damaged up bringing.

I would bring in effective crack teams to bring Foster care, and children's homes up to incredible standards.. Make sure no children ever again would be more than at risk in a government care home than anywhere else ( girls targeted by the Asian grooming gangs whilst in government care!!)

BY supporting children more, more early one would hope that would eventually mean less problems later for schools and less homeless people, less drug addicts etc.

RedForShort · 05/01/2019 09:22

Think I'd make snobbery (all forms) illegal to start with. Then I'd turn an eye to male privilege and white privilege.

The ban on umbrellas is s good call. Might take that one on.

certainlymerry · 05/01/2019 10:09

I think our politicians need to read this thread! I also agree with banning mobile phones!

fatoneatthegym · 05/01/2019 10:09

I'm amazed nobody's mentioned chewing gum yet! I'd ban it straight away.

morningconstitutional2017 · 05/01/2019 10:11

I'd remove diplomatic immunity.

redexpat · 05/01/2019 10:16

Id make touch typing courses compulsory for everyone working in the nhs.

Winebottle · 05/01/2019 10:17

As well as some more serious changes, I would ban seat reservations on trains and make ketchup sachets a minimum size of 50g.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 05/01/2019 10:34

I would ban seat reservations on trains

Er, why?

robrobinson · 05/01/2019 10:34

Dog licensing
Mandatory 5 yearly driving test for everyone
Empty building tax
3 strikes policy for drugs/ drunks at A&E (offenders of this rule would have to fund their 4th / subsequent visit)
Dog poo offenders made to do 100 hours community service
National Service - for all 17/18 year olds to include anything from serving in forces to street cleaning, to volunteering in nursing homes, planting trees, conservation, etc - equivalent to full time work.

abacucat · 05/01/2019 10:37

Yes agree with the ban on chewing gum.
Agree with banning umbrellas in cities and towns, but would allow them in villages and countryside.

DontCallMeCharlotte

"Excuse me you are in my seat" "Well he is in my seat".

I can't stand the faffing about. They are all the same. Everyone should just get there arse on a seat rather than messing about with numbers.

If there aren't enough seats to go around, some people will be stood up regardless so first come first served seems like as good a way of allocating them as any.
