Fish fingers and...

Custard.

No, really, DS is having fish fingers for tea and I need ideas for what to do with them that isn't chips or peas.

He gets a bit bored by potato unless it's cheesy mash. And he hates peas and baked beans.

He's 18mo and a pretty good eater. He mainly eats pasta so I'd like to steer clear of that. Veg can be a bit hit & miss but he'll try most things.

I'm just a bit stuck for ideas on this one.

rice? carrot sticks? waffles?

Gotstuckwiththisname · 03/01/2019 16:05

Golden vegetable rice always goes down well with some kind of veg in our house. Will he eat couscous? Similar to rice.

Jacket potato and sweetcorn is often eaten with fish fingers here too.

Or you could try making him a fish finger sandwich? Grin

WeCameToDance · 03/01/2019 16:07

Rice? Odd I know but ds is a very peculiar eater and he loves fish fingers with rice. Particularly golden savoury/vegtable types.

Incidentally my dh tried fishfingers and custard. Not something I think he would dare try again! The look on his face said it all.

Ragwort · 03/01/2019 16:09

Broccoli? Sweet corn ? Sweet potato wedges ? Bread & butter ? Salad ?

PhilomenaButterfly · 03/01/2019 16:10

Ignore, you said no pasta.
Rice? In a sandwich?

Quite often I do my two a mix plate. So it will have a main protein (e.g. fish fingers) then just bits of anything they like. Cheese cubes, crackers, raisins, apple slices, broccoli, rice, pasta, crisps, slice of toast, waffles, potato waffles, cucumber, raw carrot, tomatoes etc. They just have a selection and it's one of their favourites. They feel like they're getting a party tea and most of the stuff on the plate is decently healthy Smile

BarbaraofSevillle · 03/01/2019 16:13

Make into a taco style thing, by putting into a wrap with shredded iceberg lettuce and mayonnaise or sour cream. Sweet chilli sauce if he likes it. Could also add cucumber, peppers, guacamole or avocado.

I once served up fish fingers and custard for my (then) Dr Who obsessed son after Matt Smith ate them when he became the Dr.

MrsJayy · 03/01/2019 16:15

Potato wedges or shallowfry par boiled potatoes they take minutes and are q bit healthier than chips

Tors33 · 03/01/2019 16:19

Swede and carrot mash my children loved it when they was little

cjt110 · 03/01/2019 16:21

beans? toast? egg?

MY DS (4) has all sorts of weird variations and as long as he's eating I dont really mind. His fave at the mo is a cheese and tomato pizza, topped with peas....

MrsJayy · 03/01/2019 16:22

I used to just put some carrot bread tomatoes etcon plates with fish fingers/breaded chicken when mine were toddlers

cjt110 · 03/01/2019 16:22

They feel like they're getting a party tea and most of the stuff on the plate is decently healthy I din't know other people called them "party teas" You are one of MY people Grin

PhilomenaButterfly · 03/01/2019 16:26

I used to do that ThePoliticians, on one big plate with a bowl of ketchup in the middle.

Modestandatinybitsexy · 03/01/2019 16:27

Great suggestions! Thanks.

Might try sweet potato mash and carrot sticks.

I normally do a sandwich or like the party tea suggestion above but feel like it needs to be more of a meal as he's snacked all day today.

The very best thing to eat with fish fingers is spinach. Truly, it is. Maybe that wouldn't go down too well with some younger children, though.

The glorious combination of fish fingers and spinach is even better with tomato ketchup. I was converted from my life-long love of Heinz recently, when I discovered Tiptree tomato ketchup. I couldn't possibly go back to Heinz now.

slappinthebass · 03/01/2019 16:34

When toddlers I used to just serve with plenty of veg usually. There is carbs in the breadcrumbs. Sometimes I get those frozen microwave bags of rice with vegetables in.

BabyNameBook · 03/01/2019 16:39

Before I could convince one of my DC that vegetables weren't the food of the devil we ended up buying him vegetable fingers which look like fishfingers but are filled with mixed veg, I would do 2 fish fingers, 1 veg finger and brown rice / cous cous.

By the time he realises the 3rd fish finger wasn't really fish he was too busy enjoying it to say no.

greyspottedgoose · 03/01/2019 16:41

Sandwiches 😍 food of gods! Add some cucumber & cheese cubes on the side

Modestandatinybitsexy · 03/01/2019 17:00

I've just realised how incredibly orange this meal is!

OP posts:
ForalltheSaints · 03/01/2019 17:14

You have to realise that there is only so much custard in the world and the custard lake could dry up!

Modestandatinybitsexy · 03/01/2019 17:19

Seriously orange!

I don't think the red plate helps things much!

Thanks for all the help. The fish fingers are going down well and I'm hopeful for the mash 🤞🏻
