Getting rid of sky tv?

RedDeadRoach · 03/01/2019 11:57

We've got Sky Plus and the cheeky bastards have just put it up £20 a month so it's now unreasonably expensive. Looks like Virgin Media are also expensive but we don't watch a lot of TV really so makes me wonder what exactly we are paying for! We could save £50 a month if we got rid but for some reason it's hard to make the decision to cut it off because we've always had it. Has anyone else said goodbye to sky and gone to freeview or similar? Did you miss it?

We got rid of sky a couple of years ago.
We now have a now tv box and Netflix so pay about £16 a month.
It's much better.... I miss been able to record programmes but they are all on the various players so can find things if I look for them. Just have to remember to look!

finks100 · 03/01/2019 12:02

I have been thinking the same, we don’t watch much on the actual sky channels, but love the recording feature.
Is there a way I can have sky plus, ie series link programs without paying sky?
We also have phone and internet with them, can I get it all cheaper another way?

Bound · 03/01/2019 12:03

Left Sky after about 15 years and went to Virgin on a good offer. They renewed the offer after the year was up so we stayed with Virgin. I actually prefer Virgin now I’m used to it. Hoping they renew the offer again this year.

finks100 · 03/01/2019 12:05

Does virgin do series link? And phone and internet, am happy to move the whole lot for a better deal!

Dementedswan · 03/01/2019 12:10

We have a freeview box and Netflix. Cost us 9.99 a month and we can still record things.

jinglewithbellson · 03/01/2019 12:11

Sky broadband and phone £38 (still waiting for dh to call and get that lowered 🙄)
Now tv boxes in the rooms which we pay £15 a month and get more than we did on sky and Netflix

ThisMustBeMyDream · 03/01/2019 12:13

I went one better. I got rid of sky, and tv licence. Now i pay £15 a month for netflix and Amazon prime.
Best thing I did! I really don't miss it at all!

Fatted · 03/01/2019 12:17

Depends what you watch really. We do pay a lot for sky. But then we do have the telly on most evenings and it's the sports channels and movies we're watching. So I think we get our money worth from it.

If you just watch 'normal telly' you can get all the recording features, catch up etc with other equipment. Now TV is sky on demand but without a contract.

finks100 · 03/01/2019 12:18

I’ve just found a nowtv stick in Tesco for £15 with 2 months entertainment pass, does that work like sky plus? Do I need to pay to subscribe to now tv?
(January cost cutting is going on here, no longer just blindly paying subscriptions if there are cheaper ways!

finks100 · 03/01/2019 12:20

@Fatted
Thanks, we don’t subscribe to movies or sport, we just watch normal tv or Netflix!

DianaT1969 · 03/01/2019 12:21

Look at Now TV. Cheaper.

strongswans · 03/01/2019 12:24

I've just cancelled my sky contract. Have gone to virgin for fibre as need the speed, and am just going to have a free view box to record, then a now stick for the couple of sky channels we'd miss. Argos have some good deals on the now sticks at the moment.

SayNoToCarrots · 03/01/2019 12:24

You can get freeview boxes that record. Like this

hardworkharriet · 03/01/2019 12:27

We got rid of Sky a couple of months ago, as it was largely unmatched and more and more expensive we don’t miss it. We bought a free view box instead. We have a Netflix subscription and occasionally watch Amazon Prime stuff (via Firestick).

YahBasic · 03/01/2019 12:31

Never had Sky - we have Netflix (£10 per month), Prime (£39 for the year) and are trialling Now TV (currently £11.99 for movies & TV, will probs keep TV for £7.99 a month).

It’s a lot of entertainment for just over £20 a month. We do both really miss the sports, but just aren’t prepared to pay £35 a month on top of the above.

Fatted · 03/01/2019 12:35

Now TV doesn't have a subscription, so you just pay month to month like Netflix. What you pay depends on what you want to watch. They do an entertainment package which is boxsets, a movie package and a sports package. Obviously the movie and sports one is more expensive. It's the same as the on demand stuff from sky, so it's basically the box sets, movies and catch up stuff. You can stream certain sky channels live, but it doesn't have the recording feature like the full sky package.

cantfindname · 03/01/2019 12:39

Cancelled Sky years ago due to the price hikes and also the number of repeats. Since then we have used FreeSat and saved a small fortune. In fairness we are not huge TV viewers, which made it even sillier to pay for Sky.

ForalltheSaints · 03/01/2019 13:12

You can get Now TV or Netflix, or just buy the box sets for the things you feel you would miss a great deal.

guessmyusername · 03/01/2019 13:29

When Sky put ours up last year, I priced a similar package with Virgin. I then phoned up sky to tell them I was leaving and wanted to give notice (I thought I had to give them a month's notice, but I was wrong!), they then reduced my monthly bill by £40 to match Virgin.

PuppyMonkey · 03/01/2019 13:37

I’m curious to know why you got SKy TV in the first place if you don’t watch much TV. Confused

mommybear1 · 03/01/2019 13:42

Someone posted previously (on another thread) that you can watch sky and use it as if you were subscribing via an Amazon Firestick- it's techno magic I don't understand but DH has said it is possible and a colleague at his work does it 🤷🏻‍♀️

RedDeadRoach · 03/01/2019 14:00

We have had it for years and viewing habits change. We used to watch it a lot more pre kids and pre netflix/prime. When it was £55 a month it wasn't too bad so we just kept it on plus we like the ability to record things we do watch so it's useful to know that it can still be done even without Sky. Thanks for the suggestions ill have a look into Now tv and free view.

We got rid of sky a couple of years ago. It was expensive enough then and the only thing that was watched and missed was when DH’s football team played and it was on sky sports.
Dh kept justifying the cost for the children and how’s much they watched but they were quite happy with out it. We’ve had prime for over a year and Netflix for about 6 months and don’t miss the sky at all. Netflix is brilliant, so much stuff on there to watch, old box sets, films, I can always find something to watch on it and dh has finally got over loosing sky sports.

FOTTOSOFTFOSM · 03/01/2019 14:12

We have Netflix and Amazon Prime. We also put Now TV on on an advocate basis when we fancy it. You can get movies and sports through it.

Raven88 · 03/01/2019 14:28

I got rid of it and I don't miss it at all, I have Netflix and DH bought a Roku box from Asda.
