Getting rid of sky tv?

RedDeadRoach · 03/01/2019 11:57

We've got Sky Plus and the cheeky bastards have just put it up £20 a month so it's now unreasonably expensive. Looks like Virgin Media are also expensive but we don't watch a lot of TV really so makes me wonder what exactly we are paying for! We could save £50 a month if we got rid but for some reason it's hard to make the decision to cut it off because we've always had it. Has anyone else said goodbye to sky and gone to freeview or similar? Did you miss it?

@finks100

Does virgin do series link? And phone and internet, am happy to move the whole lot for a better deal!

Yes Virgin do series link. Better than Sky the way they allow you to adjust the links to what you want. They do phone and internet too. So far their internet has been more reliable and fast than when we had Sky too.

I realise you probably already know that sky will sometimes reduce their costs if you call them up with the details of lower prices with alternative providers.

MaMisled · 03/01/2019 14:47

Put this off for a while but big price hike pissed me off. Stopped Sky 2 yrs ago. Initially regretted it but then discovered Netflix!

GiantKitten · 03/01/2019 15:13

Our Sky was approaching £80pm just for TV - with all channels, sport, HD+ & Go (? where you can access it remotely - DSs use that elsewhere)

So I rang to say we needed to cut back, & as we’d had it for £17 years without ever changing they dropped it to £50 - which is still a lot, & I’d happily drop it for freeview, but then I’m not the one who watches...

So you could try threatening to cancel, OP, & see what they offer you. 0800 151 2747

There’s no cable here though which limits our choices. We also have Netflix (for 4 users) & amazon prime & BT sport via Plusnet. Adding up all that + TV licence we’re still spending well over £80 a month on TV (but that’s less than £3 a day, & we don’t go out much Grin)

(Subsequently our old 250GB box blew up when idiot son spilt water in a trailing socket & we now have a beautiful new 2TB Q box, which is lovely Smile)

Thanks @Bound
I’ve had a look and reckon I can get the same as we have now for £30 rather than £50, going to give sky the chance to price match first!
Have realised that only £20 adds up to £240 a year!

Bluestitch · 03/01/2019 16:46

I'm going to do this, I realised the other day that all I watch is Netflix anyway now, and the channels I'd get on free TV anyway. The kids would miss the Disney stuff on Sky but I can pay for Disney Life for them every month and save loads of money.

dogzdinner · 03/01/2019 16:49

I used to have it, don't miss it at all. It is ridiculously expensive.

I now just have a freeview box and Netflix for £7.99 which I share with 2 others.

I have had the occasional month(s) with NowTV and Amazon Prime when they offer me a special price.

SheChoseDown · 03/01/2019 18:24

Binned Virgin 7 months ago. We watch Netflix, Nowtv, Prime and the iplayer etc. We have a recording box in case we ever want to record something on freeview.
Got our broadband with EE.
Don't miss it at all. Thought we would

pointythings · 03/01/2019 19:11

We got rid last year when my H and I broke up and we had to cut back. We just have Freeview and Netflix, I'm considering Amazon Prime but we're actually pretty happy with what we've got. We barely watched it - it was mainly my H's thing, he'd watch endless documentaries for hours and hours and hours and hours and hours.

MadisonAvenue · 03/01/2019 19:30

We cancelled a few months ago, the only channel I've missed is Comedy Central because The Middle was on that. Oh, and Sky Sports but when our team are on we buy a Now TV Daypass.

We're using Freeview, Now, Prime and Netflix. We were mainly watching Netflix and Prime anyway, so Sky was pretty much surplus to requirements and we got fed up anyway of them sticking the prices up and getting no recognition for being loyal customers for 20+ years.

MaisyPops · 03/01/2019 19:33

It's good to see other people thinking the same.
We've just bought an Amazon prime stick to see what's on there and am looking into netflix.

Sky take the piss with their prices and jumps.

Esqueleto · 03/01/2019 19:36

We got rid of virgin tv and now just have the broadband because, in fairness it's brilliant.
We intended to get a recordable freeview box but haven't needed it as pretty much everything we want to watch is available on catch up directly through the smart tv.

WrongKindOfFace · 03/01/2019 20:04

They will very likely offer to reduce it if you cancel. When I cancelled I was receiving calls and mail for months offering 50% off the price.

WrongKindOfFace · 03/01/2019 20:05

I don’t regret having cancelled though. Rotate between Netflix, prime and Now TV instead.

twilightcafe · 03/01/2019 20:08

We got rid of Sky a couple of years ago for the same reasons as others.
Haven't missed it at all.
We have Freeview, Amazon Prime and Netflix.

LuluJakey1 · 03/01/2019 20:12

Got rid of Sky and have Freeview and Netflix - at 7.99 a month. Never miss it and nor does DH now we have children!

RedDeadRoach · 04/01/2019 19:03

We contacted virgin and they offered us a complete package forthwith tv/internet/phone for only £32 A month. So we called sky and with some arm twisting they've agreed £30 a month. Fibre on its own would have been £27. But it was good to hear everyone's views and in the future we would certainly not rule out freeview.

PickAChew · 04/01/2019 19:09

We've just used free view or freesat, for years. Simply fewer channels of nothing on!

We do have a firestick, now and dh subscribes to netflix. Still much cheaper than sky.
