How do you brighten your living rooms up after Xmas?

Do any of you do anything particular when you take the decorations down? I always buy a nice bunch of flowers, but I kind of miss the extra sparkly lights in the bleak weather.

I am leaving the fairy lights up around the mirror Grin
They look so pretty they are staying!

HolyMountain · 02/01/2019 21:29

I have twinkly lights up all year round, around the windows , in vases and I have a twig tree I leave up.

I like the glow and soft light given off, makes the house feel extra warm and comforting.

Ivegotthree · 02/01/2019 21:30

Bulbs. Hyacinths, daffodils, narcissi.

Pretty scented candle or two flickering away.

And hoovering up the bloody pine needles cheers me up!

I am loving the lack of clutter! I don’t want anything extra in the room. It’s really nice after the business of Christmas and the room constantly feeling full to now have some space.

comebacksoonsusan · 02/01/2019 21:35

Fairy lights still up.
Candles on.
Couple of bunches of flowers.

Starlight90 · 02/01/2019 21:35

I have lights round the inglenook all year.

I have decs in the inglenook all year like lit-up wooden stars & hearts.

I have candles in hurricane vases all year.

Lamps are on never ceiling lights.

SinglePringle · 02/01/2019 21:36

Flowers and candles. And a having the windows open all day today during a good clean has helped shift the Christmas fug.

shoofly · 02/01/2019 21:36

My lovely friend bought me a set of cable and cotton lights which are the colour of my room as a Christmas present last year 2017. My mum was sick in January and died in March and I finally put them together in October, (they're a pain to put together) they got put away when the Christmas decorations went up so they'll definitely come out again.
Will definitely miss the rest of the lights. Have managed to keep a huge poinsettia alive, so it'll hopefully be around for a week or two.

brizzledrizzle · 02/01/2019 21:36

Ours doesn't change over Xmas because our tree is out in the hall. We put some tinsel on the fire place but that's about it so when we take it down it's back to our usual little knick knacks.

AdaColeman · 02/01/2019 21:37

Spring flowers always cheer the place up.

If you are a bit short of cash you might find a few stems of pussy willow or a sprig or two of beech tree buds on a country walk, or buds of forsythia from the garden soon open up in the warmth of the house to give a bright flash of sunshine yellow.

MissBehaving1000 · 02/01/2019 21:37

Candles and fresh flowers!

Put all mine away earlier and I'm liking how minimalist my house looks.

That said, I was sad to see them go and I'm looking forward to getting them all out again later on this year Grin

Crunchymum · 02/01/2019 21:39

We have fairy lights around the top of out bed all year and the coloured lights from the kids tree go into a vase and act as a nightlight.

Going to grab some flowers tomorrow and hope it cheers me up a little

EnidButton · 02/01/2019 21:40

Candles and daffodils. Although I think everyone near me has cottoned in to the daffodil thing this year as there's not one to be found.

So I've bought yellow roses instead. Windows open to let some crisp air in and then some scented candles lit, makes the place feel fresh and welcoming.

Always have a few fairy lights around whilst it's still Winter and dark evenings.

selepele · 02/01/2019 21:42

I’m really missing the decorations as well
As everyone else said flowers

EdWinchester · 02/01/2019 21:43

We always light candles, all year round.

Plus I am looking forward to my Freddie's Flowers delivery on Friday.

Catsrus · 02/01/2019 21:44

But it's not 12th night yet. Mine stay up to the bitter end!

EnidButton · 02/01/2019 21:44

Also, not a decor thing but, clearing out the fridge and cupboard after 2 weeks of stuffing leftovers and half eaten boxes of mince pies back in any old way. A clear out, clean and some organising feels good. Especially if you replace some of the Christmas food with fresh fruit and veg.

I bought some fridge organiser tray things from Sainsbury's (prob get them everywhere) so stuff doesn't get lost at the back. Looks very neat.

SleepingBooty · 02/01/2019 21:48

We redecorated after boxing day and our downstairs is now an off white, it's gorgeous, so clean and fresh. Switched our wax melt from Xmassy fragrance to a fresher smell. I'm getting some new colourful cushions.

Honeyroar · 02/01/2019 21:50

Mine are still up, but will be going fri/sat. Our trees are all outside, I didn't do much this year, but I've lights in vases and on the mantelpiece. I did a huge deep clean before Xmas as we had visitors at the end of Nov. So I guess I won't have as big a job this year!

It's still Christmas! I'm with @catsrus.

I always find it odd when people take decorations down mid-season.

I bought a bunch of daffodils the other day, but once the decorations are down I'll probably also bring in some forced bulbs and they won't be long off flowering. I think things that are actually growing are nice this time of year.

Alanamackree · 02/01/2019 21:55

I like the coziness of candles and firelight and low lamps.
Around Feb, I’ll bring in the spring flowers and start shifting into Spring but for now I’m still in my burrow.

mizu · 02/01/2019 21:59

Our tree will be coming down on the weekend. Lights around the dresser are a permanent feature. This year I have other lights around the place that may stay too.

Flowers are a great idea.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 02/01/2019 22:05

Like other PP Fresh flowers or spring bulbs and I keep fairy lights above the fireplace & light scented candles.

We are also planning some home improvements so I'm positively energised by planning some of the details for the new rooms. This sort of helps with the January blues.

I'm also looking forward to spring and will be swapping winter curtains and textured sofa cushions for lighter window drapes and brighter cushions.

MissMarplesKnitting · 02/01/2019 22:09

Can't wait to go to garden centre and get some hyacinths and narcissi in pots.

I have fairy lights in the fireplace all year

I'll switch the cushions in late Feb/march for summer ones but I'm happy to slowly welcome brighter colours and scents in.

happydays1983 · 02/01/2019 22:09

Put bottle lights (find them on amazon) into a decent empty bottle of wine, gin or whiskey you've drank over the festivities. I've got a bonnie bottie of Harris gin to put on my mantle piece Smile
