Is this gross or normal?

My relative cooks potatoes or parsnips in fat (like beef dripping or whatever), eats the potatoes, lets the pan cool down ( including a few leftover crusty bits) and then puts it back in the pan drawer without washing it, then cooks with it again a week later.
I think that's a bit gross really.

Why don't they wash it? Won't it just all stick on?

MunchMunch · 02/01/2019 20:52

Is that not sort of seasoning the pan?

KindergartenKop · 02/01/2019 20:53

Interesting. The person is older but never used to do this in the 80s and 90s! It could be worse I suppose!

It's what my mum always did, so I do it too. Normal for us.

KindergartenKop · 02/01/2019 20:53

The fat stays in the pan in the drawer.

Perfectly normal for me!

My roasties are bloody delicious too...

MunchMunch · 02/01/2019 21:02

Ahh I didn't realise you meant all the fat still in the pan.

We used to do it when I was younger in the 80's/90's except the pan would stay on top of the cooker with the lid on. There were times we'd find the cat had moved the lid and licked the fat though! Grin Don't worry we changed the oil then.

dementedpixie · 02/01/2019 21:04

Sounds like my mum's old deep fryer pot. It had lard in it for frying chips and then it hardened again after use and was put away again

Crinkle77 · 02/01/2019 21:05

My mum would pour any left over meat juices from roasted meat in to a metal tin that she would keep in the fridge. She would then use it to fry bubble and squeak in at a later date. Would taste amazing!

IndianaMoleWoman · 02/01/2019 21:15

All my older relatives do this but I just can’t bring myself to. Rationalyy, I know that I have been brainwashed by the cleaning industry/hygiene police, but I still won’t do it!

Theunreasonableone · 02/01/2019 21:18

My mum always had a cup of recycled fat in the fridge when I was growing up. She’d always wash the pan though

KindergartenKop · 02/01/2019 21:25

Yeah, she always had a pot of fat in the fridge in oldentimes but it's the sitting in the drawer all week (roast is only on Saturday) at room temperature which is a bit yuck to me.

It's not really done now often but was quite common at one point.

My dads chip-pan was only emptied when the oil was changed, once it had cooled the lid was put on and it was kept in a cupboard next to the cooker.

To be honest if it was me I'd wait until it was cooled then put a layer of baking parchment on top just to keep the dust etc off it. If it dripping or lard it becomes a (soft) solid once cooled so the parchment would just on top.

sparklepops123 · 02/01/2019 21:27

Yh this was normal when I was young ,was a bit off putting when could see the mouse feet prints on the cold fat !

Heatherjayne1972 · 02/01/2019 21:33

I can’t be the only one who thinks this is gross and unhygienic
Eww

SamBaileys · 02/01/2019 21:36

My Mother in Law saw that I was about to wash the Yorkshire pudding tray after Sunday lunch at her house ages ago, she lost her shit.

Bunnybigears · 02/01/2019 21:36

My GM used to do this if I recall everything she cooked in that pan tasted amazing.

Fairylea · 02/01/2019 21:38

EnvyEnvyEnvy

Not envy.

Bluerrghhhh. No thanks!

PuppyMonkey · 02/01/2019 21:38

My parents used to do this - the big pan of lard that used to live in the top oven (switched off).

jessstan2 · 02/01/2019 21:40

When the pan is heated up any germs will be killed (hopefully). It sounds good to me but I'd be more likely to drain off the fat and bits, put in a container in the fridge and wash the oven dish.

TheVanguardSix · 02/01/2019 21:42

Gross! 🤮

bonzo77 · 02/01/2019 21:47

My grandma would pour the fat into a mug and keep it in the fridge to use at a later date.
