Is this gross or normal?

My relative cooks potatoes or parsnips in fat (like beef dripping or whatever), eats the potatoes, lets the pan cool down ( including a few leftover crusty bits) and then puts it back in the pan drawer without washing it, then cooks with it again a week later.
I think that's a bit gross really.

My Gran would pour all the fat into a bowl and we'd gradually add breadcrumbs, veg and other random bits then put it out as a fat ball for the birds.

😷

Passmethecrisps · 02/01/2019 22:50

My parents used to reuse the fat in the frying pan over and over again. So I think this is some sort of old fashioned thing. I still feel like I am being terribly fancy by not using the fat again

Yuk...

DramaAlpaca · 02/01/2019 22:55

My hygiene obsessed DM who's now in her 80s used to keep a jar of fat in the kitchen for reusing. I'm much relaxed about things than her but I can't do it. I just can't.

Anyone who’s died from this dreadful practice please speak up now.

If the fat has been used for parsnips it will taste of parsnips though.

Jaffacakebeast · 02/01/2019 23:02

I dread to think how old the lard was in my grandparents chip pan. My god the best chips in the world tho

Zoflorabore · 02/01/2019 23:05

Yuck. I do have OCD though so am very aware that my thoughts aren't seen as normal sometimes regarding hygiene etc.

Growing up in the 80's we never had a chip pan, my mum was spotlessly clean and hated the smell of chip fat so I'm not used to it.

My Ndn in her late 30's does this though and said it's perfectly normal to her.

My MIL makes keftedes, like a Greek version of meatballs. The oil that she fries them in then goes back in to a big vat to be used for roast potatoes for the next god knows how long.
The roasties taste great to be fair!

FlyingMonkeys · 02/01/2019 23:21

I have a pan of beef dripping that gets reused. Would cost a fortune everytime.... Not.died.yet...

FrogsLegs33 · 02/01/2019 23:21

We had the “chip pan full of solid fat in a cupboard” when I was growing up Grin

It made the absolute best chips. I will admit that I now have an air fryer and I don’t clean it, just a quick wipe with some kitchen towel Blush so you get dirty chips while pretending to be healthy Grin

I also remember my Mum bollocking me when I was really small and had discovered the pan in the cupboard, poked holes in the solid fat and filled the wells with washing up liquid!!!

donajimena · 02/01/2019 23:33

Fried eggs from the cast iron pan with reheated lard were the best tasting things EVER. Especially if bacon had been fried in it beforehand.

payperview · 02/01/2019 23:33

Ewwwwwwe

logicallylow · 03/01/2019 14:10

My gp's used to do this but it is 🤢🤮 and very unhealthy

BarbaraofSevillle · 03/01/2019 15:06

Roasting trays, along with tea pots and frying pans should never be washed (it is OK to pick out bits of food that would otherwise burn) as it ruins them and you lose the flavour.

I have a frying pan that I use most days to make an omelette. I never wash it, as instructed by Delia and just wipe it out each time and sometimes I don't even bother to do that.

formerbabe · 03/01/2019 15:11

I wouldn't do it...but I'm not outraged at the thought.

Dizzywizz · 03/01/2019 20:59

Woks are supposed to just be wiped out each time, not washed. I normally wash ours out though! Food still tastes amazing

Stormwhale · 03/01/2019 21:04

Utterly gross. Cooking things in rancid fat. Good God no.

The fat jar in the fridge was normal during my childhood, but not left out at room temperature!

Whitegrenache · 03/01/2019 21:20

Never wash Yorkshire pudding tray in my house. The intense heat would kill any bugs.
