Dogs and poo and public areas. Why isn't this practice questioned more?

Just returned from a walk (with dc, no dogs as I don't have one) and started to think about how extraordinary it is that people take dogs on walks in public parks and green spaces specifically to give them the opportunity to poo!!

Why isn't this practice questioned more by the community? Surely dog owners are the minority so why aren't communities discussing this and requiring dog owners to change their behaviour and encourage dogs to poo at home.

This is especially an issue in cities where green grass and space are limited. Even if dog owners scoop up the poo there would be remnants on the grass where unsuspecting picnickers sit and children play upon.

How do blind owners of guide dogs pick up poo? And couldn't the man with the walking frame mentioned upthrea use a pooper scooperd? We have fox ,badger and rabbit poo in our garden but it's nothing in size compared with my neighbour's beagles' poo.

howhowhow · 02/01/2019 17:32

Guide dog owners aren't obliged to
Pick up the shit.

Guide dogs are taught to relieve themselves on command ie suitable time/place.

But @TripTrap says With exercise comes poo, when it comes to dogs!
so is it inevitable that dogs despoil the public places, or could they actually be trained not to?

If they could actually be trained not to then the owners are deliberately letting dogs turn the outdoors into a shithole

legolimb · 02/01/2019 18:22

Perhaps train dogs to use a doggy loo ?

That would be a great moneyspinner for someone !

reallyanotherone · 02/01/2019 18:29

Fox shit is the worst. Stinky, sloppy, grim.

Shoot them all so I can have a nice clean lawn.

Also shoot the owls while we’re at it. We have one keeps dropping it’s packets of tails and skulls on my deck.

There’s also a country walk near my house I like to go on. Covered in rabbit and deer pellets.

As for cow pats and horse shit...

Wildlife. Filthy animals. So unhygenic. We should cleanse the world.

Whatsforu · 02/01/2019 18:40

Wordthe only a select few dogs are suitable and make it through the training for guide dogs, so no all dogs would not be able to be trained to that level. It's the dog owners who don't pick up that need training!!!!

So that means all dogs could be taught but people choose not too.

Quite. Thing is, horse and cow shit is based on vegetable diet, and it isn't harmful to children. Dog shit is just ingested meat shat out within minutes. Horses and cows generally shit in fields for horses and cows. Dogs shit in children's parks, streets where people need to walk, outside schools (what kind of filthy bastard lets a dog shit near a school), etc.
Country people are used to animal shit, go clearing out the horses and into the fields in wellies. Town people wearing normal shoes have to face cleaning them or throwing them away because some dirty humans want dogs. Seriously what's the point? They're dirty, smell, shit, slaver, and are dangerous to children. Have fleas, worms. What on earth would you want something like that in your house for, with the exception of disability or severe loneliness? Yes I think the world would be a better place without dogs, for everyone. The streets would be a nice place to be for a change.

ADastardlyThing · 02/01/2019 18:50

Guide dogs are trained really intensively and differently and it costs a lot of time and money, and some them don't make the cut unfortunately so it's not a similar comparison.

As it happens though my dog can poo/wee on command and usually does it in the same place when we take her out for a walk. I think it's a fluke though as we haven't trained her, she just has a fave spot I think, side eyeing the ducks as she does it, probably to make sure they don't peck her bum Grin

Whatsforu · 02/01/2019 18:52

Jamieoliver fellow humans are more likely to pass on their germs than animals. Just saying!!!!

YeOldeTrout · 02/01/2019 18:53

"all dogs could be taught but people choose not too."

Lots of dogs fail to pass guide/assistance dog training, though. Many breeds are never even tried as guide dogs (eg. great danes or jack russells) so their potential to be toilet trained is unclear.

At least once I know of a guide dog that poo'd off schedule; everyone was afraid to tell the owner so nobody picked up the mess.

Shadowboy · 02/01/2019 18:54

Lol at the person who said cats are hygienic and bury their poo!!! The ones that sh*t in my garden and on my drive don’t bother. Drives me bonkers when I have to clean up the neighbours cat poo every single day

Ylvamoon · 02/01/2019 18:55

Grin what a shitty debate! Grin

reallyanotherone · 02/01/2019 18:55

So are humans. Children are far, far more likely to be harmed by, or catch disease off, other humans than any animal.

reallyanotherone · 02/01/2019 18:57

In fact living in close proximity with one or more animal reduces the chance of auto immune disease including excema and asthma.

JamieOliversChickenNugget · 02/01/2019 19:00

That's true, but at least parents clean up their child's mess. You don't have to clear dirty nappies off pram wheels etc.
I don't have an issue with illness. Just as we avoid things with immunisations and public health measures, why don't we reduce the numbers of dogs in cities. And have staff specifically to catch offenders, like traffic wardens but for dogs. Then punishment would be street cleaning.

ADastardlyThing · 02/01/2019 19:03

My dogs not dirty lives a bubble bath), smells a bit doggy but not offensive, like a giant gerbil, does shit bit its cleaned up, gets flea'd/wormed so has never had them, doesn't slaver, could be dangerous like literally everything else of course, and definitely doesn't belong to a dirty human! I hate to think what sort of dog owners you know!

reallyanotherone · 02/01/2019 19:25

That's true, but at least parents clean up their child's mess

I have seen more shitty nappies dumped in toilets/streets of towns and cities than i have seen dog shit.

Scallywag1903 · 02/01/2019 19:31

When I visited my son in Canada - we walked his dog sometimes in a public park ( not the designated dog parks). Suddenly he shot off - towards the hedge. There he pooped. Yes, my son has trained him ( i kid you not) to poop on the sides of a park because he says families play here and I would hate for a child to lay/roll on that grass. I know not all dogs can do that and ofc not practical, but I do think there is more awareness there. I go running here in a rural area and we now nickname a lane Poo Alley because it always has huge piles of dog mess along the middle which stinks in the summer....grrr... ( and I am a doglover - just not a shit lover)

JamieOliversChickenNugget · 02/01/2019 19:40

I have seen more shitty nappies dumped in toilets/streets of towns and cities than i have seen dog shit Where do you live?! I've never seen that at all.

reallyanotherone · 02/01/2019 19:47

Where do you live?! I've never seen that at all

Do you never use public toilets? Leisure centres, shopping malls, motorway services.

It’s not common, but more common than coming across dog shit in solihull town centre..

tilder · 02/01/2019 19:49

These threads always end the same way. People exclaiming their dogs are part of their family. That other animals are worse. That people need to teach their children about dogs and learn how to behave near dogs. And if you think otherwise, you're a dog hater.

Ffs. The sense of entitlement. If you own an animal, they are your responsibility. The rights of an animal do not come before those of a human.

Dog shit is a problem. Own it. Campaign for enough funded dog poo bins. That includes emptying and disposal. Stop appropriating open space designated for other use (e.g. sports fields) and sort out provision for dogs. An open space for dogs.

You own a dog, go walk it. Just don't expect others to delight in dog shit and enthusiastic animals. Not everyone wants it. And to say it isn't a problem is ridiculous.

Cat owners should be responsible too. Shut them in at night and give them a litter tray.

tilder · 02/01/2019 19:52

Which makes me sound like a hater. I'm not. I just get irritated by the attempts to deflect the argument and make it somebody else's problem.

It's a minority of dog owners that cause the problem.

Whatsforu · 02/01/2019 19:53

There is no entitlement from dog owners on this thread, every person has said its the people who do not pick up are the problem.

tilder · 02/01/2019 20:02

Maybe not yet. There is an awful lot of 'other animals shit too and they are worse than dogs' though. Seriously? There might be other shit. Doesn't make dog shit ok.
