Dogs and poo and public areas. Why isn't this practice questioned more?

Just returned from a walk (with dc, no dogs as I don't have one) and started to think about how extraordinary it is that people take dogs on walks in public parks and green spaces specifically to give them the opportunity to poo!!

Why isn't this practice questioned more by the community? Surely dog owners are the minority so why aren't communities discussing this and requiring dog owners to change their behaviour and encourage dogs to poo at home.

This is especially an issue in cities where green grass and space are limited. Even if dog owners scoop up the poo there would be remnants on the grass where unsuspecting picnickers sit and children play upon.

I’ve seen plenty of humans peeing and shitting out, I have managed to restrain myself from calling for all of them to be banned.

Whatsforu · 02/01/2019 13:32

When you choose to have pets they become part of your family whom you care for. Not a million miles away from choosing to have a baby. You clearly don't own a pet if you can refer to them as toys!!!!

legolimb · 02/01/2019 13:32

Maybe dog ownership should be encouraged more for those who live out in the countryside with more space to roam and shit freely?

There are too few green spaces for dog exercising for many town dwellers - hence the issues with dog poo in parks where children play, or left on the streets.

I don't have a dog as I can't balance out the joy of dog ownership with the tediousness of carrying a bag of shit home twice a day.

I'd happily pick up that man's dog poo for him, poor bugger, that dog probably gives him a meaning to get up and about and keeps him more active than he would be otherwise. As they do with many people, wonderful animals (not artefacts, I don't believe they have been made?) Who can really enrich people's lives. When i had severe depression my dog was the only reason I bothered to get out of bed and have a wash. It's a reason why some companies now offer 'pawternity' leave, because it has been proven that pets can really help people mentally and physically, and why some get taken into residential homes and similar places, and there's service dogs don't forget!

Medical checks aren't feasible, many things can happen to someone limiting their mobility whilst they own a dog and then what? Dog just gets rehomed or pts? Who decides the degree of disability needed to have their let taken away or denied one (because let's face it that's what it would be, more disability discrimination, can't have those sorts owning pets can we?) .

How can a dog be part of a human family?
how is a dog like a human baby?
If is a dog is part of the human family then why can't the dog shit indoors like the humans do or do the humans go walking and shit as they walk

Wordthe · 02/01/2019 13:35

Dogs have been created by humans out of a wolves
they are not natural creatures

INeedNewShoes · 02/01/2019 13:35

It's an absolute minority of dog owners that don't pick up their pet's poo. Unfortunately it only takes one or two dogs walking the same route once or twice a day and their poo being left for a path or park to become filthy.

I wish something would be done to deal with these few selfish owners but realistically there isn't the budget to have poo police on patrol!

Wordthe · 02/01/2019 13:35

They are human artifacts

HeffalumpsDaughter · 02/01/2019 13:37

whatfor of course a dog is a hobby! They’re entirely dependent on you and wouldn’t survive without you. You got it in order to entertain yourself. That’s what pets are. As much as people love to think they’re doing a really good service helping a dog live a brilliant life, they’re only doing it because they want something to do/ walk/ play with/ companion. So it’s a hobby, a toy for people. It’s been bred to have the features and personality that make it appealing to people.

Wordthe · 02/01/2019 13:39

the tediousness of carrying a bag of shit home

Dog ownership is now symbolised by the little black bag of shit
A dog owner is a bearer of shit

Wordthe · 02/01/2019 13:40

Dog owners seem to think that they are doing a service for the world, saving endangered species or something like that?

Whatsforu · 02/01/2019 13:41

Ha ha ha like I said clearly don't have any pets.

ADastardlyThing · 02/01/2019 13:42

Artefact isnt the correct word, dogs are not objects.

Wordthe · 02/01/2019 13:43

What is the correct word then?

JamieOliversChickenNugget · 02/01/2019 13:46

Dogs should be banned in cities they are disgusting and uncivilised. Dog shit is a national crisis the streets are utterly vile. Should only be allowed in the country and even then is specific areas with dog toilets.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 02/01/2019 13:48

My dog is not an artifact or toy! She is a furry companion - a family member and best friend.

People don't take dogs for walks so they don't crap in their gardens, they take them for walks because they need exercise. With exercise comes poo, when it comes to dogs!

recently · 02/01/2019 13:49

I think dogs should have separate parks. Our local council had a health initiative running last year when they had free yoga classes in the city parks (great!). Unfortunately there was so much dog poo to avoid that it was almost impossible to take part. Dog wee is awful too - really stinks in the summer. I think a lot depends on where you live though - I live in a very built up area with very little green space and far too many dogs.

Doobydoo · 02/01/2019 13:49

I really like the idea of dog parks. We have 2 dogs...soon to be 3 and are fed up walking them in areas that are full of dog poo because people do not pick it up. We always keep them in leads. We now pay to use a paddock that is fully enclosed a couple of times a week so they can run free..and in between walk them on a road in the middle of no where. However I find cat crap in my garden infuriating....

ADastardlyThing · 02/01/2019 13:49

It ain't artefact! Grin

Besides, a quick Google (I was 99% sure but wanted to check) reveals that domestic dogs aren't thought to be descendents of wolves at all but wild dogs.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 02/01/2019 13:49

And I'm far more annoyed by bloody cats. Crap in peoples gardens, get in your house, grab food etc etc. Cat owners don't get moaned at for that because 'that's what cats do' Hmm

SoyDora · 02/01/2019 14:00

I agree TripTrap. Cats shit on my front garden every single night, and bury shit in my borders for the DC to find when they play/dig in the summer. But apparently that’s endearing because cats can’t be tamed and do what they want 🤦🏻‍♀️.

Bollocks, or the streets wouldnt be the state theyre in. My disabled neighbour had to ring the council there was so much outside she couldnt get out the gate

Wordthe · 02/01/2019 16:44

a family member and best friend
my family members and best friends don't leave their feces smeared all over the public places that they visit

Wordthe · 02/01/2019 16:50

@Jamie, I agree, things are worse than they were before the introduction of picking up after your dog.
I know that there are good and responsible dog owners but they might as well not exist because we are hardly aware of them.
All the public sees is dog shit strewn all over...in the minds of the public increasingly dogs are associated with feces, stench and disease

ADastardlyThing · 02/01/2019 16:58

This threads turning out to be pretty amusing!
