After years of batteling with a 'cold sore' that never seemed to work go away with the cream and took forever to heal wasn't a cold sore but angular cheilitis..... After using daktarin whe. It flares up it always goes away .....sadly it's left the corner of my mouth slightly darker as it's scarred ..

I find it odd that I've never had a cold sore ...

Neither have I. My sister gets them when run down.

It's not that unusual - it's the herpes virus after all! In fact I can't actually remember the last time I saw someone with one...

ShesABelter · 02/01/2019 00:29

I have never had one and other than one of my aunt's don't know anyone who does.

MissTeriName · 02/01/2019 00:45

I’ve never had one. My poor dd has them a lot.

Never had one. My parents, sibling, DH, DC and ILs never have either.

DramaAlpaca · 02/01/2019 00:50

I don't remember ever having one, neither does DH. Our young adult children haven't had them either.

AntiHop · 02/01/2019 00:53

I get this too. My 4 year old had sore area on the side of her lips. Showed it to a pharmacist who said cold sore. Took her to a gp who said angular chelitis and gave her anti fungal cream.

2019rubberband · 02/01/2019 01:10

Not everyone will have the herpes simplex virus, so not everyone will get cold sores.

AGHHHH · 02/01/2019 04:25

Coldsores aren't like acne, you're not born with them. You catch the virus. Most people have it and are infected with the virus at a young age but for many it lays dormant their whole lives and they don't know they have it.

SpamChaudFroid · 02/01/2019 08:32

I used to get cold sores. My immune system must have got better at dealing with them.

Unfortunately now I get the angular thing in the corners. I find a dab of canesten gets rid of them, didn't know about Daktarin OP. I'm trying a silicone scar gel for the scarring.

Dhalandchips · 02/01/2019 08:35

I get them and I bloody hate them. So painful. Thankfully it's only a couple of times a year. Never heard of the angular thing....off to Google!

Perfectly1mperfect · 02/01/2019 08:38

About 75-80% of people have the virus, not everyone shows symptoms, so chances are you have it. I get them, more often now as I was also unlucky enough to get a rare auto immune disease. My OH and children have never had them. It's just one of those things.

feelingverylazytoday · 02/01/2019 08:38

I've never had a coldsore and neither have my children. My family never kissed us on our mouths when we were little and I followed that rule with my own children.

Santasballsack · 02/01/2019 08:42

Never had one, never had chicken pox either despite 3 dc who all had it. Maybe I'm immune.

WildCherryBlossom · 02/01/2019 08:46

OP angular chelitis can be caused by mineral deficiencies. I have had it when my iron levels have been very low. Maybe worth exploring why you have had it so persistently. For the scarring try a Vitamin E ointment (Jäson do quite a good one)

TheNewYear · 02/01/2019 08:52

I get angular cheliitis as well but generally in both corners of my mouth at the same time. I’ve also never had a cold sore - nor have my parents, DH or DCs.

FairyFuckDailyMail · 02/01/2019 08:53

Living in a hot country I used to get them every month especially over the festive season due to the sun. But after living here for 15 years I get it only when run down. Had 2 this month due to exam stress, sickness, house move and dealing with it all just before Christmas. But this was only the 2nd and 3rd for the year which for me is nothing.

motortroll · 02/01/2019 08:57

You have to have the virus.

I've always had cold sores but they've evolved over time. Started as one big blister, then I started having clusters all around my mouth chin, once on my cheek and often up my nose!!!

Now I get then repeatedly in 2 places on or next to my lip and have darker skin/scar in those places. I have to use concealer or it looks like a mustache!

Gagglegeese · 02/01/2019 08:59

All very interesting , I didn't know about the cream for the scars , I try it .

I only seem to get it during the winter.
Luckily I know what it is now and it lasts 2 days if that x

I get them in my nose Angry no idea why.

CrabbitArse · 02/01/2019 09:07

Bepanthen is great for angular chelitis, recommended to me by a pharmacist as it can be linked to VitB deficiency

Roomba · 02/01/2019 09:10

This thread has just reminded me that I used to get angular cheilitis as a child - had no idea that's what it was called though.

OP, I'm 42 and have never had a cold sore. Neither has my 39 year old sister or my 38 year old brother. My ex never had one and my kids haven't either. My mother gets them and was always very careful to avoid us getting them from her.

Laloup1 · 02/01/2019 09:12

I used to get lots but I now apply Zovirax at any slightest tingle/hint and that seems to have significantly reduced the number of breakouts.

flumpybear · 02/01/2019 09:44

HSV is a virus you get once then it lives inside your nerve dorsal root ganglion - it flares up and goes away but you never get rid of it.
Some people are asymptomatic and some
Don't have the virus

Try the Zovirax drug as I used to work for Wellcome and they were the best back then

x2boys · 02/01/2019 09:57

Well yeah you won't if you don't have the virus ,and I have a vague recollection of being told during a lecture during my nurse training that most people catch the virus before adolescence?

Ozgirl75 · 02/01/2019 10:31

I’ve never had a cold sore either, neither has my DH or my parents or my children.

Until I had mastitis with my first baby I’d never had antibiotics.

Never broken a bone, never been to hospital (except having a baby), never even had a tooth filling.

It’s just luck.
