How to keep your house smelling beautiful

Just what the title says really!
How do I keep my house smelling fresh? I open the windows daily to let air in etc but how do I keep it smelling beautiful?

OP posts:
Carbsnomarbs · 01/01/2019 19:46

I put fabric conditioner in a spray bottle with some water and spray it around once a day

Keep floors clean/mopped

A capful of zoflora and some water left in a bowl will have that room smelling lovely

Any tips for teenage boys rooms would be much appreciated though!

Nettletheelf · 01/01/2019 19:48

Controversial response: Ambi pur plug ins. The ‘threevolution’ kind.

Somebody will be along soon to tell you that they are a fire hazard and will give your pets asthma or smell fake etc etc.

LancashireTea · 01/01/2019 19:50

Zoflora and boiling water in sinks helps with my kitchen, as does having reed diffusers in the bathroom, kitchen and bedrooms. I also have a wax burner in the living room.

I also think airing rooms out and dusting often helps.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 01/01/2019 19:53

Washing curtains and other soft furnishings helps.

TulipsInbloom1 · 01/01/2019 19:54

Aldi fake Jo malone room spray in Pear and Freisia. Windows open a lot. Drop of essential oil down the kitchen sink and hot water after cleaning the kitchen. Zoflora winter morning in the spray mop.

I get a flannel or old cloth and soak in in fabric softener , I then put it on the radiator and it makes the whole house smell lovely !

I also put fabric conditioner on cotton pads and put in the henry hoover .

I sometimes put washing powder on the carpets finely and then hoover it up makes hoover smell good too!! Xx

Starlight90 · 01/01/2019 20:04

Zoflora
Fabric conditioner in a bottle and sprayed on bed linen/rugs etc

TipseyTorvey · 01/01/2019 20:12

A friend who was moving recently gifted us her air purifier as it wouldn't fit and its amazing! Sucks all the fuggy smell out of every room I put it in. Additionally (and very hated on here) I bought those auto air freshners for all the bathrooms (male dominated household) which sprays every 20 mins and I love them. Then zoflora and open windows!

lifeofamummy · 01/01/2019 20:17

Good quality reed diffusers

Buzzzzzzz · 01/01/2019 20:20

First thing is making sure everything is genuinely clean - including soft furnishings which tend to hang on to bad smells, so making sure curtains, throws and carpets are thoroughly cleaned regularly helps massively.

Minimising drying indoors and maximising ventilation when possible helps get rid of the sort of damp / stale smells.

Definitely zoflora too, used on the floors, down sinks or to freshen up fabrics between washes. But also being aware it’s essentially a pleasant smelling disinfectant - you still need to clean first and foremost.

I keep a lot of houseplants, since first getting them I have noticed it keeps the house smelling naturally fragrant if you pick well scented flowering plants, and they seem to keep the air a lot fresher and better quality. So I highly recommend letting your green fingers get to work.

I do occasionally use incense and scented candles but sparingly as they can be overwhelming if used too often, they are more for lighting after cooking particularly strong foods or when something smells awful.

cowfacemonkey · 01/01/2019 20:24

I put a capful of lenor unstoppables in the hoover bag. Aldi’s fake jo malone candles and diffuser.

Kikipost · 01/01/2019 20:27

I always get told my home smells lovely

No air refreshers, no room sprays, just very clean and well aired!

KrispyKremes · 01/01/2019 20:30

Agree with the clean everything soft thing.

Making sure all bedding is fresh and clean every week and things like sofa cushions and curtains etc.

Also make sure there's no dust hanging about and that towels are clean and dry.

All the air freshener in the world won't help if there are musty things about.

Also obvious things like emptying the bins etc.

I do love a wax melt though. And have a wipe round with zoflora.

Dermymc · 01/01/2019 20:50

Just open your windows daily.

SilverySurfer · 01/01/2019 20:55

Yup, open windows - nothing can replicate fresh air. I wouldn't use any perfumed products if you paid me - they all have a revolting smell.

MorningsEleven · 01/01/2019 20:58

Kick out the husband and children?

I find that cheap reed diffusers are a false economy. I've had 7 months out of a Molton Brown one compared to 4 weeks from Aromaworks.

PinkOnWednesday · 01/01/2019 21:00

Try an essential oil diffuser, one of the ones you plug in and then mix your favourite smelling oil with water and it releases a scented steam as such and you can make it as strong as you want it, I love them

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 01/01/2019 21:06

I wouldn’t go spraying diluted fabric conditioner on everything. That is bizarre and sounds like one of those bonkers Mrs Hinch ‘tips’. It’ll knacker your fabrics and the extra unnecessary fragrance is a trigger for respiratory irritations and skin issues.

Linnet · 01/01/2019 21:28

@tipseytorvey if you don’t mind me asking which air purifier do you have? I’ve been thinking of getting one to help with my allergies. If it helps to make the house smell better that is also a bonus.

fiorentina · 01/01/2019 21:34

Airing the house well, cleaning regularly, ensuring bedding, towels etc are kept clean, dirty clothes are washed and not left hanging about. In the kitchen I have fresh herbs, have house plants that clean the air, have had eucalyptus over Xmas drying in a vase and do use candles etc from time to time.

Starlight90 · 01/01/2019 21:45

dondrapers ive been spraying my linenwith fabric conditioner before Mrs Hinch was born.

Carbsnomarbs · 01/01/2019 22:56

don although I have seen some of Mrs Hinchs tips they weren’t anything new to me, the op has asked for tips and we are merely giving her ideas for what we do in our own homes.
As with anything if it’s not suited to your family lifestyle (eg a child has a skin condition/asthma) then nobody is forcing anyone. Just ideas Smile

Adversecamber22 · 01/01/2019 23:42

Windows nit just opened daily but all the time upstairs and shut in winter when it gets dark and open till bedtime in summer. Use fresh lemons to clean the sink in the kitchen.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 01/01/2019 23:43

Oh I like this thread!
The fabric softener diluted is genius. I am obsessed. It's only the aldi own brand in mine and it's very diluted. I spray the sheets when we get up - dry hours before we go to bed and very effective. Bedrooms smell lovely.

I am also in love with zoflora I think because it's so strong you need only a speck of it. I give the kitchen a good clean then just slosh a teaspoon full around the sink - smells well into the next day!

Other thing I do is after I've finished a room is a really good spray of whatever and shut the door. Lasts quite a while.

We keep bedroom windows open most of the time and always after we get up - can't get rid of the breath smell fast enough!!!

Littlelambpeep · 01/01/2019 23:50

I agree with washing cushion covers in the living room etc wash rugs also. Bedlinen fresh. Wipe down sofas. Open windows. Clean toilets daily.

Also have lots of plants and I think it makes a difference.
