Scented candles - are they really that good??

When I think I'd scented candles I think of my teenage years and cheap, headache inducing things that I mainly just had on display to gather dust. I keep reading posts on MN about how people love their 'xyz' candle/how they're such a treat/wouldn't be without it. So... Are they an actual 'thing' now? Have I missed out on something here? Obviously I've seen them in shops but never given them any thought - I guess in my mind they were just for decorative purposes.
If they really are so lovely and a luxury, I want a piece of the action! Any recommendations? With 3 DCs under 5 (including a newborn) I don't have time to sniff every candle everywhere so pointers would be great. I love fresh, airy scents (but not the classic 'fresh linen' that all air fresheners seem to smell of).

You have to get the right ones I find the ones sold in bnm stores really good or Yankee candle

Pissedoffdotcom · 01/01/2019 19:40

I used to be a yankee addict but they are so expensive. Some cheaper scented candles are brilliant. I make my own now, much prefer it

lastqueenofscotland · 01/01/2019 19:41

The quality save/home bargains/Asda fake Yankee candles are really really good

Yankee candles from outlets.
I got the big ones for 12 each from wembley.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 01/01/2019 19:43

I really love all the outdoor forest/woodland smells. I’ve got one by Sand and Fog and it genuinely makes me happy when no other scented candle ever has done.

danni0509 · 01/01/2019 19:44

Yankee candle.

Go direct to Yankee using there website.

Always cheaper, they have 30% off sale at the moment so the large jars are £16.79 each or the medium are 2 for £15.99 on offer if that offer is still on (it was yesterday)

SomethingAboutNothing · 01/01/2019 19:44

I love the white company candles, they used to do one called white mint which was my absolute favourite but it's been discontinued. Quite pricy but the scents fill the room and they last quite a while.

DramaAlpaca · 01/01/2019 19:47

They make DH sneeze & give me a headache so it's unscented ones only here, sadly.

y0rkier0se · 01/01/2019 19:49

Really think Yankee Candles are hugely overrated! Used to really like Woodwick but now they’ve been bought by Yankee too! I like Neom candles - scented but not over powering.

Babdoc · 01/01/2019 19:51

I wouldn’t recommend them for indoor use, especially around babies or young children. Quite apart from the fire risk, they vaporise a lot of quite toxic chemicals into your house for your kids to breathe. Most, including Yankee candle, contain paraffin wax, which burns to release toluene and benzene- carcinogenic and irritant to the lungs.

LancashireTea · 01/01/2019 19:52

I love a scented candle/ wax melt. I find the ones in home bargains to be good, as well as the JM dupes from aldi.
I do have a real JM one that I got as a wedding present, but I don't want to use it up too quickly.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2019 19:53

Neom are lovely but £££. M&S do a lovely one called Calm.

I don't like Yankee.

AnnaMagnani · 01/01/2019 19:55

They give me asthma/a migraine.

Scented candles and reed diffusers are a modern plague.

FurryDogMother · 01/01/2019 19:55

I'm a recent convert to Yankee, but would recommend you dip a toe by buying the tealights or wax melts if you want to sample the scents. I also like Shearer candles (Amazon, and cheaper than Yankee) - again, they do tealights so you can try the scents before you invest in something bigger. My favourite Shearer scents are Amber Noir and Frankincense & Myrrh. Yankee favourites (for this season) have been Perfect Tree (instant Christmas tree scent, really real ) and Snowflake Cookie, which is like sugary biscuits :) Some Yankee scents can be overwhelming (Midnight Jasmine, I'm looking at you) unless you're burning them in a ballroom, or similar - they're not exactly subtle.

huggybear · 01/01/2019 20:04

I like Yankee Christmas scents but they're definitely not what I'd called luxury. How much are Neom ones?

FreedaDonkey · 01/01/2019 20:06

I love them but keep reading how they are carcinogenic so obviously I don't want to burn them anymore.

Anyone know if they're really bad for you or not?

Starlight90 · 01/01/2019 20:08

Home Bargains and Aldi.

Got 2 from Tesco from my SIL (lot if though gone in to buying them🙄) and ive finished the mulled wine. Glad it said what it was as there was no smell. Gingerbread is now lit. Yet to smell it.

HalfPintPixie · 01/01/2019 20:12

I love a good scented candle, but I make my own.
I already have loads of fragrances from soap making, and it's nice cause I know that I'm definitely going to like the finished product!

Having said that, I also enjoy buying the ones in fancy glass jars, then reusing them. I just find a scented candle extremely comforting!

MissMarplesKnitting · 01/01/2019 20:13

Going to go against vthe grain as I loathe Yankee candle smells. They're all too sweet for me.

Get soy if you can, they burn cleaner and with less soot.

I love St Eval ones. Gorgeous scents. My local gift shop stocks them and the sea salt one is gorgeous.

SinglePringle · 01/01/2019 20:20

I too loathe Yankee Candles. Awful, synthetic scents that give me headaches. And they’re so twee. Naff.

I really rate the Zara Amber for an everyday candle. The double wick ones burn very evenly.

Mid priced ones I buy regularly are True Grace (Lime is lovely) and Kate Hoxton.
I’ve also found True Grace in TK Maxx.

I also buy Dyptique a couple of times a year as a treat. I love the Galliano, Fois De Bois and Tuberose scents.

retainertrainer · 01/01/2019 20:20

Tk Maxx have great ones. Look for ones with aromatherapy oils in.

StormyLovesOdd · 01/01/2019 20:24

I prefer wax melts, they're much cheaper so you can change the scent as often as you like

shirleyschmidt · 01/01/2019 20:27

Massive candle fan!! They set a lovely ambience, and instantly make the room feel more cosy. Whenever DH walks in and I've had one on he'll always comment on how nice the house smells.

My favorites are White Company Seychelles, Yankee Christmas Cookie and Woodwick Vanilla Bean. Homesense/TK Maxx often have a brand called Saville Row, which is very nice and quite inexpensive. Also like Next candles. Cheap and cheerful definitely Home Bargains (gingerbread one is LOVELY). Can you tell I like the sweet smells!

Zampa · 01/01/2019 20:31

Aldi Jo Malone dupes are fantastic and the scent is pleasant and long lasting. I think they're £4 each.

Beauty Pie do fantastic candles and they come in at £14 each (plus the monthly subscription).

Diptyque are definitely the best of the best but at £40/£50 a pop, they are definitely treat/present territory.

LeSquigh · 01/01/2019 21:25

Why anyone would have an unnecessary naked flame burning in their house I cannot work out. If you had seen the aftermath of just one of the many many house fires caused by these things you wouldn’t. Madness.
