Scented candles - are they really that good??

When I think I'd scented candles I think of my teenage years and cheap, headache inducing things that I mainly just had on display to gather dust. I keep reading posts on MN about how people love their 'xyz' candle/how they're such a treat/wouldn't be without it. So... Are they an actual 'thing' now? Have I missed out on something here? Obviously I've seen them in shops but never given them any thought - I guess in my mind they were just for decorative purposes.
If they really are so lovely and a luxury, I want a piece of the action! Any recommendations? With 3 DCs under 5 (including a newborn) I don't have time to sniff every candle everywhere so pointers would be great. I love fresh, airy scents (but not the classic 'fresh linen' that all air fresheners seem to smell of).

IMO Yankee candles are bloody awful.

The Aldi Jo Malone fakes aren't bad for every day. I used to love Dyptique but DH didn't (he had no idea how much they cost lol!) so now I search out Neom (and others) in TXMaxx and very surprisingly Sainsbury's do some very nice candles.

I also like St Eval, but go to a local independent lady who makes her own for most of my candles I bloody love candles

I really don't like Yankee candles, too synthetic and sweet for me.

I managed to get a hollow tree from tk Maxx for £25 (retails at £40). I can smell it when unlit and it's like nothing I've ever smelt before. Like the forest but with added magic.

@Raglansleeve I just bought some birch tar essential oil & it smells v strongly of woodsmoke!

I just finished neom pine diffuser & it was gorgeous but was £3 reduced in tk a maxx over a year ago. Wouldn't pay £35 or thereabouts full price but would like a viable alternative.

I tried making my own candles with lots of essential oils & was ok but not amazing.

Think I'll go back to tealights & essential oils in an oil burner. Or an electric one if anyone has any recs of those? That neom diffuser though - mmmmmmm

Make your own using wax and aromatherapy oil!

There was a thread years ago about candles and a poster made her own and gave the 'recipe' and it works out very expensive to make a good quality aromatherapy candle. I spent a fortune and mine were still crap. Commercial candles have a chemical in them to help them burn evenly, without that they just burn a hole around the wick and you're left with a candle with no wick Hmm

The Home Bargains gingerbread smells really nice, has anyone got any good reports?

I hate scented candles. Then someone gave me a Ralph Lauren one. It's amazing! Subtle smell, has burned for HOURS and it even smells faintly just having it in the room unlit. So I'm wondering if the more expensive ones (I'm guessing this one wasn't cheap) are better?
