Last night, the most silent NYE ever??

When I went to bed last night, I fully expected to be woken at midnight by a cacophony of fireworks & party noise etc but I heard nothing! I can't believe it. 20yrs of living in north London and this is a first. Normally you can't sleep for the noise and it usually goes on for a solid hour at least - they have in the past. I'm stunned. I wonder if the area has been extra subdued this year with Brexit coming up, or whether my whole neighbourhood decided to up-sticks & party elsewhere? It truly is usually wall-to-wall fireworks/shouting & laughter, plus the obligatory count-down from four or five different directions. Come to think of it there was no music noise at all last night. Did anyone else find it quieter?

There were plenty here. The first lot started at 1530. Hmm

We usually listen to the drunken church bells in the next village but such noisy fireworks we couldn't hear them

SalmonLeBon · 01/01/2019 09:42

Loads here from about 7pm through to 1am. Poor dog was utterly distraught, despite sedatives.

We commented in how unusually quiet it was here. There were some fireworks at 4:30pm but nothing at midnight.
I rang church bells at midnight but walking back home through my village there were few signs of life at all.

Before the Millenium, it was not tradition to have fireworks on NYE.

^ This has got to be the most bonkers comment ever because I'm 50 and I remember fireworks on NYE since I was a little kid.

Barely any in our village (Lincs) compared to previous years.

Adversecamber22 · 01/01/2019 10:41

Loads of fireworks here including the neighbour across the road who had fireworks so huge they were like the one that’s are at official displays. DS shouted cheers for all the free fireworks when it finished.

MrsJBaptiste · 01/01/2019 10:52

Loads here - and a good box full from our garden! 🚀💥🚀💥🚀

Racecardriver · 01/01/2019 10:56

Has your area gentrified or aged? For example if you live in a recent development there is a good chance that everyone has reached an age when they are more considerate.

ManicUnicorn · 01/01/2019 11:01

Loads here, some sounded like bombs going off. The sooner they get banned the better.

PlatypusPie · 01/01/2019 11:05

We were ( still are) staying with friends just outside London, very high up with good views all around and down across the city. Even taking into account the good visibility, our friends said there were more, bigger and brighter displays than in all the time they had been living there. We spent ages standing out and looking at them - too far to hear much, fortunately !

IncyWincyGrownUp · 01/01/2019 11:28

If was very quiet in general in my city last night. For the first time in years I went out with some friends for NYE, and it was just a generic Monday night in the pub, barely busy at all. It was a bit perplexing, though it did mean it was easy to get a drink!

bigbluebus · 01/01/2019 11:49

I live in a village and as I was walking to a party venue at 7pm there were at least 2 lots of fireworks going off in the area. Don't know what happened between then and 1.00 though as I was indoors with loud music playing. I was a bit surprised though to hear a long firework display at 1.30am when I was walking home! Thought that was a little bit late to be letting off fireworks.

StandardPoodle · 01/01/2019 19:14

They started here at 5.30pm and went through until 12.30am. Our poor dog was terrified.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 01/01/2019 19:40

I'm in Warwickshire, definitely not quiet here. Tons of fireworks and there's more going off now for some reason...

ivykaty44 · 01/01/2019 20:30

Anchor, I never heard a thing

MorningsEleven · 01/01/2019 20:40

We had 3 hours of fireworks then sirens, helicopters and a 12 hour police lockdown because of a murder. I live in a really nice place but shit kicked off last night.

frankie001 · 01/01/2019 20:50

Heard more tonight, my friends dog was terrified. He came and snuggled with auntie frankie’

Goposie · 01/01/2019 20:59

A few early evening then all quiet!
