Last night, the most silent NYE ever??

When I went to bed last night, I fully expected to be woken at midnight by a cacophony of fireworks & party noise etc but I heard nothing! I can't believe it. 20yrs of living in north London and this is a first. Normally you can't sleep for the noise and it usually goes on for a solid hour at least - they have in the past. I'm stunned. I wonder if the area has been extra subdued this year with Brexit coming up, or whether my whole neighbourhood decided to up-sticks & party elsewhere? It truly is usually wall-to-wall fireworks/shouting & laughter, plus the obligatory count-down from four or five different directions. Come to think of it there was no music noise at all last night. Did anyone else find it quieter?

Loads of fireworks around here until about 1.30

eurochick · 01/01/2019 08:15

There were loads in Winchester. Went on until around 1:30.

ClashCityRocker · 01/01/2019 08:17

Hardly any round here... Which is unusual.

Having said that, thinking about it I haven't seen the concession stands in the supermarkets this year.

Very noisy here. Woke DS up and set car alarms off. It went on for far too long. It was almost like millennium level. I'm clearly getting old!

WinterRose92 · 01/01/2019 08:18

Plymouth here - it was so quiet! We went to bed around 10 and I’ve only just woke up! I was expecting to be woken up by fireworks and people in the street but no. We live in a block of maisonettes, the neighbour above us was having a party but kept it really quiet. Best nights sleep I’ve had in a while!

Novacancy3 · 01/01/2019 08:27

Very loud fireworks here. Someone was bragging on FB that they'd managed to get hold of fireworks meant for professional displays only. Dog was terrified as usual and no doubt will refuse his walk this morning.

NigelGresley · 01/01/2019 08:27

We had a few regular fireworks at midnight, but then some twat was randomly letting off the loudest bangers it’s possible to buy - you know the ones that sound like a gas explosion.
Unfortunately for many, it seems that NYE is just another excuse to ramp up your twat level.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 01/01/2019 08:27

South-West London, lot quieter than I expected!

MaverickSnoopy · 01/01/2019 08:27

Live in town in the south east and we had LOADS. We've never had so many before. They started at about 8pm and gradually increased and at midnight it went berserk for about 2 hours. Was so thankful my children slept through it (inc the newborn). We actually had people on local Facebook page complaining.

lornathewizzard · 01/01/2019 08:29

Really loud fireworks here, think they must've been just across the road. Thankfully the kids slept through it or I'd have been even more pissed off at getting woken up! No loud parties thankfully

Starlight90 · 01/01/2019 08:33

Considering I live very rurally there were loads. Our direct neighbour put on a show, went on for 20 minutes. I have livestock and they are pregnant ewes and they were frantic. Its the same on bonfire night, he has no fucking consideration. Hes a right arsehole. When he has a birthday the whole village knows about it as we can hear it till 2-3am. Just the thud thud of his boom box. Im hoping for a right storm on the weekend if his birthday this year.

Lovelydovey · 01/01/2019 08:47

I woke up at midnight because of the noise for the first year ever - so noise has moved to South London instead!

Tupperwarelid · 01/01/2019 08:47

You should have come south of the river! SE London here and we had loads, all evening, not just at midnight

RisingGround · 01/01/2019 08:48

Went to bed about 11pm. Was fast asleep, didn't hear anything. DH didn't hear any either.

WhenOneDoorClosesAnotherOpens · 01/01/2019 08:49

SE here. Lots of fireworks last night through to about 2am. I didn't get any sleep.

Whatamuddleduck · 01/01/2019 08:50

I’m in the middle of nowhere in Somerset and this is where the party was last night! Fireworks, conga round the village etc etc. 8 month old was beside herself, joy oh joy!

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 01/01/2019 08:51

We had fireworks from about 7.30 onwards (Surrey), a couple of largish displays at midnight and then it went quiet. We usually get more later but whether I slept through them or that didn't happen I don't know.
My poor cat hid in the loo for most of the evening - silent fireworks, what a great idea, time to make them the only ones you can use.

NoWordForFluffy · 01/01/2019 08:54

Fireworks were going off round here on and off from about 8pm. There were a fair few at midnight, including the really loud ones, and DS(4) woke up and came into our bed for the first time in a long time.

We're on the NW coast.

drum123 · 01/01/2019 08:57

Before the Millenium, it was not tradition to have fireworks on NYE. I think fireworks should only be allowed on November 5th. The silent ones are a great invention!

ThomasHardyPerennial · 01/01/2019 08:57

I've never heard so many here before! I'm in West Yorkshire.

Vitalogy · 01/01/2019 09:03

Loads here in the Midlands. Are your ears ok OP Smile

I hope the silent fireworks catch on more. Those ones that bang so loud you can feel it in your chest are awful.

how did you not hear that?! I'm in north London and the fireworks were so loud I created a thread about it in chat whining! Constant from 11pm till 1am with those ones that sound like bombs!

Are you really far out? I'm zone 2 but could still here the central display in the background as well as everything local.

verite · 01/01/2019 09:19

NW London. Fireworks at about 10, then loads from 11.55 onwards.

hmmwhatatodo · 01/01/2019 09:36

Lots of fireworks all concentrated in the same hour or so ( or maybe I’m just so used to them I don’t pay much attention anymore). I’m just glad that no one in the street woke me up with their nonsense and that none of my neighbours decided to have loud parties which has happened far too many times in the past.

hmmwhatatodo · 01/01/2019 09:37

Having said that I didn’t even try going to sleep until around 12.30 but still, I don’t think any neighbours woke me up!
