I don't but thought it'd be nice to have one...

Or do you just sleep off the night before? Grin

We are off to Longleat today for fireworks, safari and festival of Light, often do that on NYs Day. Happy New Year!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/01/2019 06:51

Ever since our DC were old enough we've gone to the cinema in the afternoon on NY day and then for a meal out. Well be doing that today with ds2 (other ds is abroad).

DS is 22 and won't hear of us not doing this!

My mother always dressed us in new clothes on New Year’s Day and gave us some money. So did my grandma with my mum. I have carried the same tradition with my children.

DH and I go for a walk, generally by the sea, unless the weather is really awful.

Starlight90 · 01/01/2019 08:02

Lunchtime walk and a cafe for o nice cup of tea.

PepperSteaks · 01/01/2019 08:07

Me and my sister go to the cinema every year.

TheRhythmlessCarolMan · 01/01/2019 08:29

I'm liking these traditions!
This is my baby's first NYD so I like the tradition of dressing in new clothes.

A walk, afternoon drink and Austrian goulash for tea seems to have become a thing in our house in recent years. I was taught to make goulash by my DP's late Austrian mother who was very exacting about it! So I make it the day before, using her wooden spoon.

VioletCharlotte · 01/01/2019 08:49

I like to get up and for a walk. I'm heading out to the forest shortly with my dog. I clean the whole house and take the decs down NYE. NYD I buy fresh flowers and burn a new candle.

When the DC we're younger, they used to come for a walk with me and we'd talk about all the nice things we'd done in the previous year and make plans for the year ahead.

Lollyice · 01/01/2019 08:53

We have a drive to the beach and have a run on the sand with the kids. All weathers! Happy New Year!

dementedma · 01/01/2019 08:54

no, none. it's a pretty boring day to be honest

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 01/01/2019 08:55

Off to the beach in a bit - walk on the sand, quick go in the arcades and fish and chips for lunch.

IMissGin · 01/01/2019 08:57

Tonnes! We’re Scottish

Ca55andraMortmain · 01/01/2019 09:09

We eat steak pie, go for a walk on the beach and usually watch x-men!

TheRhythmlessCarolMan · 01/01/2019 10:00

@dementedma yes me too. But I woke up this morning thinking 'here we go again, another boring start to the year' so thought I'd ask you lot for inspo.

Lots of lovely ideas here 💕💕

It's our baby's (well 11 month old) first new year and I think I'd like to start the tradition of going for a long walk.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 01/01/2019 10:09

Ikea for lots of free coffee refills and cake
And then a curry in the evening

dontneedthedrama · 01/01/2019 10:27

I always do a nice roast dinner. Smile
A chilled day of movies, back to work tomorrow Sad

hmmwhatatodo · 01/01/2019 11:31

I like all these traditions that people have. I seem to have zero despite wanting to be a family who always do (insert exciting sounding event) at certain times of the year. I wonder if part of the problem was being brought up not having any traditions either?

Papergirl1968 · 01/01/2019 11:56

I'm envious of these people who live close to the beach.
I love the sea but we're in the midlands so it's about a three hour drive!
Oh well, I'll take a look at the Tywyn (my favourite place) webcam. Not the same but it's the best I can do.
No plans here except tidy up and try to find the dvd remote control which has been lost for a couple of days, and then dm and her friend coming for something to eat later this afternoon.

ThePurpleOneIsOverrated · 01/01/2019 12:04

Wish we had some. We just take the decorations and tree down and feel a little depressed whilst doing it. Fun times Confused

PoptartPoptart · 01/01/2019 12:08

We always have a family New Year’s Day lunch followed by board games

TheRhythmlessCarolMan · 01/01/2019 12:29

We don't take our tree down until '12th night' and often keep Christmas lights up (a-la-Nigella) until end of Jan. It cheers the winter up a bit.

Well done to those using the opportunity to tidy the house (is that like a spring clean tidy or just tidying after the Christmas shenanigans?)

My kids are now all old enough to stay up to midnight so last night we had a night of games/a few shows/NY playlist and just before the midnight countdown, they get a small bag with a few streamer poppers and smiley chocolate coins for after midnight. This year, as usual, they ate about half before storing them away, tidying up the popper mess, and getting ready for bed. This year, we also did a few of the countdowns that are on Netflix together for a laugh before the actual one.

This morning, once they've finally gotten out of bed (last one was up just before 9), we had a big cooked family breakfast, the leftovers used with lunch. Kids also had presents (we don't do Christmas) so have spent the rest of the day so far with those quite merrily so I can mostly relax. During the first week, we'll go on a walk with different bird foods and doing some clearing out (did the toys before new years, hoping to do the clothes next) over the next few weeks. I like refreshing the house in the new year before spring when we go out more.

My spouse and I got a big tasting box of chocolates this year to share between us as we'd had a pretty bad December and had little energy to shop - we're quite enjoying that and I may make that a new tradition.

TheHatOfDoom · 01/01/2019 12:54

I like to read an entire book to start the year off right,
