Do you celebrate NYE with your kids? Do you let them stay up and what age?

What do you do with them

My ds is 14 now. I've always let him stay up if he wants.

Last night we had late roast (9pm!) and then watched some tv. I was struggling to stay awake so we played uno whilst waiting for fireworks.

MissWilmottsGhost · 01/01/2019 07:16

Last year DD stayed up to watch the fireworks. She was 6.

This year she wanted to stay up but only made it to 8pm Grin

I always stay up, I think DH would rather go to bed but stays up because I do. No doubt in a few years time it will be just me and DD waiting for the fireworks and DH will be snoring.

Theonewiththecat · 01/01/2019 07:19

Me and dd (9) went to a party at a friend's. We got back home at 11.20pm watched the last of the queen concert DH was watching.
Watched the London fireworks on tv, all sat chatting for a bit. Then coldplay started so we listened to a bit of that and talked about how people sound so different live to in a recording studio.
By that time it was 12.45am so dd who was still quite awake went to watch a film in bed. She was flat out at 1.30am when DH went in to tuck her in.

Yes dcs are 12 and 7, this is the first year 7 year old has managed to stay up til midnight.
Dh made lasagna, we played some board games and watched Paddington. We then watched the countdown and fireworks on bbc.

LoudestRoar · 01/01/2019 07:23

We don't really celebrate New Years. 6 year old ds wanted to stay up, so we lasted till 11pm. DH and I were shattered from all the Christmas visits (got back late the 30th)
Once we realised ds only wanted to stay up in order to pull a cracker, we let him pull 3, then all went to bed.

SoyDora · 01/01/2019 07:28

Mine are 5 and 3 and were in bed for 7. They wouldn’t want to stay up, they’re usually asking to go to bed by 7.30pm on the rare occasion they have a ‘late’ night.

BuffyFan · 01/01/2019 07:34

We put the 3-year-olds to bed at their usual time (7), and told the 7-year-old he could stay up to watch a movie. He made it to 8:30 then asked to go to bed mid-Solo 😂

We made it to 11. Kids are awake at 6:30 regardless of when we or they go to bed 😴

MoonlightMedicine · 01/01/2019 07:37

No mine were in bed at 7 because they are up before 6am regardless of how late they go to bed. And are monsters when they’re tired! I was also in bed by 10 Shock

Ages 4, 8 and (me) 40 Grin

LittleMachine · 01/01/2019 08:05

Mine are 4 and 7 and stayed up. DS1 always falls asleep late anyway so it was no bother for him. DS2 fell asleep at 11 on the sofa, then got up at 7 🙄. I really enjoyed having them up with us.

fuzzyface · 01/01/2019 08:50

My four year old went to bed but my 12 and 9 year old stayed up. We all played a game then DH and I had a nice dinner. Then we watched a film then jools Holland and Edinburgh fireworks on TV. It was nice 🙂

anewyear · 01/01/2019 09:28

I went to bed at 10ish fell in n to a light sleep, was woken at 11.30 by 20 yr old coming in!
God knows what time the 17 yr old went to sleep, he brought himself a Nintendo Switch with money he had saved and Xmas money.
Dh fell asleep on the sofa after eldest came in (heard them talking)
Happy New Year 🥳

autumnboys · 01/01/2019 09:33

Ours are 15,13 & 9.

Last year we went out to a local village hall for a family friendly new year party. This year we opted to have a Chinese & film night. I played Rush Hour with the 9yo. The 15yo played the guitar upstairs but came down for midnight. The 9yo went to bed just after midnight.

ComeOnGordon · 01/01/2019 09:37

Since they were maybe 7 I’ve let the dc choose if they want to stay up butuntil they were 10 or 11 they quite often fell asleep before midnight.

We had friends over with an 11 year old last night whose parents still send him to bed at 8.30 every night and I think he was shocked that he was getting to stay up and that we were having fireworks at midnight. I’ve got a feeling he normally they normally do them early and send him to bed.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 01/01/2019 09:38

9 and 10 yr olds stayed up.
We had a buffet, played charades and board games, watched a bit of telly then the fireworks

ComeOnGordon · 01/01/2019 09:38

I should add my 12 year old is asleep before 9 on school nights but not at the weekend or on special occasions. This friend puts him to bed at 8.30 every single night

exLtEveDallas · 01/01/2019 09:44

We had a party and everyone stayed up. One lad of 9 was moaning, trying to persuade his parents to leave between 9 and 12 then got a second wind at midnight and was running around annoying the teens, but other than that all was fine.

DD has been allowed to stay up since she was about 7. She was a grumpy nightmare the next day, but we knew to expect it.

CountFosco · 01/01/2019 09:46

I'm Scottish living in England, Hogmanay is a big deal for us and a much more relaxed celebration than Christmas and the stress of cooking a roast for loads of people. So we have family round or go to family for Hogmanay and the kids have always been encouraged to stay up late. When they were younger they had a sleep in the afternoon but now they are 11, 9 and 5 I don't bother.

So we have lots of cake etc, DH makes pizza with the kids, more cake, board games, watch a DVD or 2 then the bells. This year the older cousins (9 upwards) stayed up later than the adults! Not quite sure when they went to bed but they are still all asleep now.

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 01/01/2019 09:51

SIL always has a party (for last 20 years). Dcs have always stayed up with their cousins. Last night was no exception! There are 14 dcs in total - youngest dc last night was 5 & the oldest 24. Everyone just gets on!!

margaritasbythesea · 01/01/2019 09:53

They are 8 and 10.

Odiepants · 01/01/2019 09:57

DS 9 was determined to stay up for the first time but he went to bed at 10.45 - he was so tired he sounded drunk! DH woke him in for the fireworks but he just went back to sleep.

Aragog · 01/01/2019 10:02

Yes, always have. Though a couple of years ago it was Dd at the party and we were the taxi. This year we are away with friends. We all sat up on the terrace with wine, cider and beer and our pot of 12 grapes (in Spain at the moment) and watched the fireworks. The girls are 16,16 and 13. Fortunate that they all enjoy being with us and hanging out together.

lazymare · 01/01/2019 10:07

Yes always. In the past we've had parties so they've had other children here. Last night we were all at a party up the road.

PoutySprout · 01/01/2019 10:11

Yep. DD has seen every new year in with us since birth - she’s 8. We often go away for new year because we all love it so much.

She had a friend stay last night. They stayed up to watch the bongs and the fireworks, had a mouthful of champagne each and were in bed asleep by 1am.

Lazy day today, as is our tradition. DH’s birthday tomorrow, so will be a busy one.

MrsAmaretto · 01/01/2019 10:16

Yes, kids stayed up for Hogmanay (8&5), we have friends round, a late dinner and they play with their friends

SassitudeandSparkle · 01/01/2019 10:17

Yes, DD has managed to stay up for the last few years (now 12), we have a buffet for tea so we can pick at it all night, drinks (coke for her, she wouldn't even try a sip of champagne) and we watch the tv, play games (DD was also on Roblox last night) and wish the neighbours a happy new year at midnight. Not many neighbours come outside here, lots of fireworks though!
