Hi!
I found out on boxing day that I'm too become a grandmother in August, which is a few wks before I'm 40!
My daughter will be nearly 22 when the baby is born and although a shock, we're all getting our heads round it now and its very exciting but she's only 7 and a bit weeks gone so can't tell too many people.
But 39 to be a grandma!! I'm gonna have to come up with a cool name... what do your grandkids call you?!

I'm a step grandma at 31 so not quite the same, he's a beautiful baby and we all adore him. His mums brilliant with him, and I don't intend to have any more babies so this means I get lots of baby snuggles without the sleepless nights Grin

My aunt is about to become a great grandmother at 58. She had her 3rd child at 20, who had a child at 20, so she was a grandmother at 40. And now her grandson is going to become a dad at 17.

My mum became a nanny at 38 .

A girl in my year at school made her mum a grand mother at 29!! She had five kids by the time she was 21. Sounds made up but really, it's true!

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 01/01/2019 00:48

Our family has all had kids later. 30+
Im 39 like you but much younger kids and in a nother life it really would be lovely to be settled and established and being a gran now! Id love a baby I could love.... and give back :)

Congratulations

DH best friend married at 25 to a woman who was 25 years older than him (and older than his own mother) and already a GM, so became a step grandad.

LuluJakey1 · 01/01/2019 00:49

I am the same age as you Op but I will be 40 in July and am, like your daughter, 7 weeks pregnant. I have a 20m old DD and a 4 year old yesterday DS. It will be a long time before I'm a grandma, Grin

Subeccoo · 01/01/2019 17:46

Love hearing all your circumstances, keep them coming, I'm def on a cloud of baby love atm.

I think it’s a good thing. My parents are well into their 60s, PIL too and it is getting harder for them to do as much.

If my daughter waits til she’s 30 to have a baby, I’ll be an older granny too.

Everything’s got it’s up and downsides.

GunpowderGelatine · 01/01/2019 17:56

With respect OP you had your DD at 17/18, why so shocked at being a grandma so young?

My MIL was a grandma at 39 and goes by granny which I personally think reminds me of white haired 90 year olds. Nanny or nanna seems a bit cooler.

Congratulations BTW, nanny Grin

This is so outing as I've told this story many times but my Dad once comforted a crying young girl in a chip shop, who had just found out she was to be a grandmother at 28!

Confused
Miljah · 01/01/2019 19:46

Evangeline- god, that's not great, is it?

A young teenage female body isn't designed for childbirth, so either both were 14 or one of them was/is even younger.

Rememberallball · 01/01/2019 20:05

My mum was a granny at 42. That DGC is now 34 and married but without children. I became a de facto granny to an 18 month old at 42 when I got together with DH and we have another DGC who will soon be 2. At the same time, DH and I are in the process of IVF and in the middle of a cycle and could be parents ourselves by the end of the year!!

GunpowderGelatine

Because up until about 2 weeks ago my daughter was always of the mantra that she wasn't interested in children. Never holds them, all her money goes on her hair, nails and tan, massively into her career - so yeah, hell of a shock. Doesn't mean I'm not delighted now that's worn off!

I never thought I'd be an old granny as such but deffo thought I'd be over 40!

A woman I used to work with became a grandma at 36. She had two children early in life then had a “surprise” baby at 33 so her son was only three years older than her granddaughter.

Subeccoo · 03/01/2019 18:47

Coffeeonthesofa
I'd kind of love that Blush

me, my mum, and my nanna all had babies when we were 15/16 so my mum became a nanna at 30, my nanna became a great grandma at 46, and my great grandma became a great great grandma at 65!

SarahAndQuack · 03/01/2019 18:58

Congratulations!

I miss my grandparents so much - and I had one I never even met, too - and I think having that special bond for longer would be lovely. There was very little chance any of my grandparents would live to see me become a mum, and having had my first in my 30s, I'm well aware it's even more unlikely my parents (let alone my partner's parents) will still be around when she has children. And that is sad. Some of the most unconditional love a child gets can be from grandparents. My lovely grandpa was so wonderful with me and it was because he knew he could just spoil me a bit (not a lot!) and make me feel safe, and I miss him so much.

I think you've got a wonderful opportunity, OP.

Miljah · 03/01/2019 19:14

sunshineandshowers ... which supports the statistics that teen mums have DDs who become teen mums.

ChatNicknameAlreadyInUse · 03/01/2019 19:58

Friend of mine became a gran at age 29!

I made my mum a gran when she was 39.

Subeccoo · 03/01/2019 20:25

Mum had me at 28, I had mine at 18, she's having hers at very nearly 22, so perhaps the next will be a bit older Grin who knows but at least I hope to be around to see it all!

SarahAndQuack · 03/01/2019 20:32

miljah, what's your point?

Of course examples will sometimes support statistics. That's how statistics work.

Dothehappydance · 03/01/2019 20:37

My older dsis became a GM at 43. I was a fabulous great-aunt at 39.

candlefloozy · 03/01/2019 20:42

My mom was at 36 and then a great grandmother at 56.
