How should black pudding be cooked ?

I've never had black pudding, but a number of my workmates like it. I'm curious as to the correct way of cooking it. Apparently, Prince Philip maintains it should be fried but Les Dawson advocated boiling. Can it be sliced and grilled ?

Slight tangent but everyone seen the Nick Nairn outtake? Gotta be on YouTube. Up north filming cooking prog, with a woman showing how to make black pudding. Unfortunately he's had a skinfull the night before and as she pours a gallon of blood into the bowl he wobbles, turns green and runs outside to puke. I know, other people suffering, but he lived, and it's funny.

The ones you buy are already cooked so you don’t need to cook them at all but they are nicer grilled for a few minutes. I normally eat a cold slice or two while I wait for them to heat up.

If ever you get to Newport, Co Mayo Kelly’s butchers does a great pudding which is a big white pudding with a black pudding in the middle of it. The best of both worlds.

AgentProvocateur is officially banned from my kitchen!

OP, if you find you do like black pudding, this is a great recipe for dinner (very rich so I only make it once in a blue moon):

I grill it.

@Tony2 I saw that episode! And have never forgotten it!

I'm a chef and serve both white and black pudding- fried, as I can only get the sticks, not the horseshoes.

I'm also from very near the home of the BP (maybe a 464 bus ride away? It's been a long time!) and my preference is the horseshoe bugger, boiled and split and served with yellow mustard.

Stornoway black pudding every time - it's not as sweet as the Bury one. I'll grill it if necessary but it's best barbequed and served with barbeque sauce and boiled tatties.

Shame it'll have to wait for what passes as summer up here.

I saw that when it was on TV. The rolled eyes of the woman making it said it all!

Thank you, Wicked. I'll bear it in mind but, regrettably, I'm not a seafood fan either !

Black Country lass here, it’s already cooked people, you can eat it cold. My favourite - thickly sliced black pudding on top of a thick slice of mature cheddar with rings of Spanish onion all set in a crusty cob, lovely. Pork pie and mustard optional😀

Notquiteagandt · 31/12/2018 19:43

Fried for me

I have a friend though that eats it as it. Literally peels slices and eats it 🤢

WickedGoodDoge · 31/12/2018 20:28

I’m now wondering if I’m the only person who didn’t realise it was already cooked! Grin

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 01/01/2019 08:20

I knew it was already cooked but I prefer it hot, with crunchy outsides.

Sexnotgender · 01/01/2019 08:24

Love black pudding! Got to be Stornaway though.

Sliced, fried until crispy on the outside in a buttered morning roll with a potato scone.

IndigoSpritz · 01/01/2019 18:36

Has anyone had black pudding for breakfast this morning ?
