As it says in the title.

2018 hasn’t been kind to me, and the drink has been relied upon far too much.

I’m fed up of moping, and want to kick start a better year with my first ever complete dry January tomorrow.

Who’s in?

Fetchez I couldn’t find any alcohol free drinks in my Aldi Sad.

Zofloramummy · 03/01/2019 20:05

I’ve had a dig around in my cupboard and found my vitamins. Not sure if you are all taking them already but apparently high dose vitamin B is good for helping with energy levels. Drinking alcohol affects your bodies ability to absorb vitamins from food so after my last dry spell (last summer) I have -
Vitamin B
Vitamin D
Turmeric
Magnesium
Thought I’d start taking them again and see if it helps give me a boost. Thiamin is supposed to be good too but never got around to getting that.
Bathing in Epsom salts is also supposed to help Hmm

I'm in. I've gained 3 stone over 5 years and it needs to go. I have fallen into the trap of drinking every time I see my best friend. Partially boredom as with young kids we are at hers or mine of an evening. I'm not studying for the first time in years and am bored. My life lacks focus. Plus I may be divorcing very soon .

So yes. If I can do 3-4 weeks teetotal il be much happier as it will kick start weight loss too

Also 3 stone on here.....from drinking to self medicate severe depression i think.

All week I have been drinking posh cordials. Today it is water with lemon and cucumber.......I am determined if I am cutting out some 600 cals of wine a day I a NOT replacing them with sugary cordial!

Clare Pooley's book 'Mummy was a secret drinker' has just been released again as a paperback. I am loving it!

Bloodyfucksake · 03/01/2019 20:36

I'm one with alcohol weight gain. I have the calories from the wine and then the calories from the huge amounts of junk I eat while drinking the wine, and then the food I eat the next day to absorb the hang over feeling. Really hoping I can stick to this.

namechange2117 · 03/01/2019 21:02

I’m eating some leftover cheese from Christmas, and thinking how much more delicious it would taste with a glass of red wine. Argh! Xmas Sad

optionthree · 03/01/2019 21:11

God, I really need this thread.

May I join?

I have been doing a 70cl bottle of gin over Friday / Saturday / Sunday nights for the past six months or so. And more wine etc in the early evening before DCs go to bed.

It's fucking disgusting. And as the child of an alcoholic parent, I really need to get a grip of this. I'm also getting fat.

I'm only on day two (polished off the last of the gin on New Year's Day Blush). Tomorrow evening is going to be tough. I'd always look forward to Friday, knowing that I'd be able to knock back a massive gin come 7pm. And, for some reason, my body seems to helpfully forget the sinking feeling of dread I'd wake up with at 3am every Saturday morning. So I'd crack on with another drinking sesh on Saturday night. Moron. I was (am?) stuck in such a vicious cycle.

So, yes. Tomorrow is a big test. I have no gin in the house though.

Thanks to everyone on here.

MrsGrindah · 03/01/2019 21:14

Just think how bloody virtuous you will feel on Saturday morning though! I’m giving you permission to come on here and gloat if you resist temptation!

Calphurnia · 03/01/2019 21:18

Day 2
Glad to see the calories I'm 'saving' on the App
I finished off the Xmas pâté this evening. Would normally be an enormous trigger for wine. BUT, the bottle has stayed in the fridge Halo
In bed with a brew and a book

CallingDannyBoy · 03/01/2019 21:22

You’re welcome Fetchez. Interested to hear about the sugar cravings. I’m cutting out sweets etc as I was eating so many each day along with cans of coke. Going back to work will be a crunch point for me in breaking habits of constantly munching.

Welcome and good luck to all whether you are reducing what you are drinking or cutting it out for January. One step at a time and if you have a stumble don’t worry and don’t bin it - just start again. Thoughts are with those who are finding this especially difficult when dealing with a loss.

FrankiesKnuckle · 03/01/2019 21:23

Can I join?

I need to do this, I need to reset (or delete) my relationship with alcohol.

3 times over the Christmas period I have been so drunk that I cannot recall conversations, getting to bed, sex with my husband..... I could go on. In fact I've been this way for years.
I'm pretty ashamed of myself.
I have no off switch when it comes to alcohol. I like the feel of getting drunk.
I cannot drink one or two, I have to drink until I'm pissed.
I've drunk at home, alone, whilst in the care of my daughter.

Frankly, I'm a bit of a disgrace!

I'm also quitting smoking, so that should be easier as I reach for the fags when I've had a drink.

I'm starting at the gym tomorrow too!

optionthree · 03/01/2019 22:15

Thank you, mrsgrindah Grin

Zofloramummy · 03/01/2019 22:41

End of day 3 in bed with camomile tea ☕️

GirlFliesHome · 04/01/2019 06:37

Morning all. Day 4 of DJ, but whatever day you are at come on... we have got this!

Friday is just another day ....but Saturday mornings without hangovers are FABULOUS.

Calphurnia · 04/01/2019 06:40

I'll need some distraction later, Friday is usually wine day. If I can kick a Friday habit, I can do this!

Silkie2 · 04/01/2019 06:53

Can I join belatedly. Have never managed for a month before. Last Xmas evening-out was last night out so have no excuses now - though mostly drink early evening at home, when a bit hungry, a bit tired and sometimes annoyed at something. Then I reach for the vino. Not an excuse really.
Anyway, here goes..........will download app...

Rightwayup · 04/01/2019 07:06

Joining. Have a massive fuck it switch following 3 close family deaths and the huge associated shit.

70sbaubles · 04/01/2019 07:46

Joining- day 4 and feel better in the morning for the first time in ages, bright eyed and bushy tailed

ApolloandDaphne · 04/01/2019 08:03

I am starting today as we are heading home from our holiday. I am actually looking forward to it. I am overhauling my eating too and hope to lose a bit of weight in the process.

namechange2117 · 04/01/2019 08:54

Three days sober now - woop! It’s been quite a while since that last happened. I’m feeling so much better today too - more alert and energised and no longer so groggy.

When I drink I will almost always wake up around 3 or 4am feeling terrible, and lie awake till 5 or 6am. These past couple of nights though I’ve slept like a baby!

I’m aiming to have a sensible amount to drink tonight and tomorrow and then nothing on Sunday, firstly so I stick to my four days this week, and secondly to ensure that I start next week off in a good place. Monday mornings are hard enough, but with a hangover they’re positively dreadful!

Thank you to the OP for starting this thread - it’s really helping.

How is everyone else doing?

namechange2117 · 04/01/2019 09:02

Friday is just another day ....but Saturday mornings without hangovers are FABULOUS.

This is so true. The amount of Saturdays I’ve “lost” just lying in bed hung over, unable to do anything at all and feeling dreadful, is so depressing. I’d love to have the time to do fun stuff and make the most of my free time.

dragongirlx · 04/01/2019 10:13

Joining - managed two days then had an emergency dentist appointment and ended up drinking after to calm down so am feeling miserable today. Doesn't help my toothache was caused by grinding my teeth in my sleep and that's exacerbated by bad sleep.
Managed three weeks last year so want to go for longer

MrsCar · 04/01/2019 11:37

I'm struggling today. I look forward to my Friday evening wine so much Sad

Screamqueenz · 04/01/2019 12:49

4 days in and I'm not quite feeling bright eyed and busy tailed.
Sleeping lots, the alarm woke me the last two days and that never happens, so I'm hopeful for a lie in tomorrow....
DH is also doing DJ, which is really helping me keep it together.
Out with friends Sunday afternoon, to the pub and then a meal, so that will be a test!
Drinking loads of water so I can only think it's a mild form of withdrawal?

JonesTheSteam · 04/01/2019 13:02

Can I join too please?

Can quite easily drink a bottle of wine a night and not really feel any after effects...

Have been dry since having a glass or two on NYE! Even though I've spent two days staying with my MIL... Wink

I think tonight will be hard as always have a drink on a Friday evening...
