As it says in the title.

2018 hasn’t been kind to me, and the drink has been relied upon far too much.

I’m fed up of moping, and want to kick start a better year with my first ever complete dry January tomorrow.

Who’s in?

Jamie would eating something sweet take the craving away?

allyourcats · 01/01/2019 17:27

I'm with you! Desperately need to drop a stone or two and drinking every day is making me so unhealthy in other ways (I have depression and anxiety and it is a really crap way of self-medicating).

namechangedyetagain · 01/01/2019 17:29

I'm in - from tomorrow as half a bottle of wine left to use up from lunch. I gave it a good go last January and lasted 21 days. But drank way too much last year - not lying when I reckon I drank every day from July to October (db diagnosis and then dying). I still drink more often than is good for me and it doesn't even have an effect mostly.

I need to find something else to do / drink In the evening as this is my most stressy time and when I'm likely to hit the bottle.

Have to say though when I have given up alcohol it made no difference to my weight or my skin which was disappointing. I look bloody awful at the minute (guess grief and not sleeping does that to you) so any improvement will be welcome.

I'm in! I've hidden all the remaining alcohol in the house in the loft so it won't be so easy to get to, and DH has agreed to do
DJ with me. I've got into the habit of having a couple of glasses of wine in the evenings and just need a break from it. What are you all doing instead of the usual drink in the evening? I'm getting a glass of sparkling water with a slice of lime now...

Happy new year all!

Naturally I have a hangover and am feeling rather sheepish/apprehensive....

I identify with so many things you’ve all posted - from the day drinking (because why not when you can Confused) to the tolerance creeping up/a bottle of wine not touching the sides ....

What strikes me most is that a lot of us are going through various stresses / trauma and THAT is the problem.

Booze becomes the solution, but deep down we all know that it’s really, really not Blush

I’m watching trash on the tv with the DC and on the tea, hope you’re all doing ok... x

I know that drinking isn't the answer. The solution would be to have my brother back but that isn't going to happen. How I'm supposed to live the rest of my life without him is something I'm struggling with and so I'm drinking a lot. It does seem that a lot of us are using it to deal with other stuff.

Just off toget my pjs on and finish the bottle of wine with some cheese and biscuits. Then I'm internet shopping for a nice moisturiser, a dark circle cream and a fancy pants water bottle that won't leave my side. I look haggard and rough. I need some sparkle back. This will probably only last until the weekend but I have to at least try.

Exisonfire · 01/01/2019 18:31

Oh namechanged I do know the feeling, but of course not exactly what you’re going through yourself.

We can but try. Xx

There's a thread already OP.

HolyMountain · 01/01/2019 18:38

It’s a shit cliche but true; one day at a time and all that.

name enjoy the internet shopping , the money saved on booze can get you a decent skin cream Wink.

Exisonfire · 01/01/2019 18:39

Thanks Ob - no harm in having another one eh ?

namechangedyetagain · 01/01/2019 18:43

I do think it will take more than a skin cream to look vaguely hmm normal again but I'm ever hopeful Grin

JamieOliversChickenNugget · 01/01/2019 18:45

They do say alcoholics crave sugar after detox, because alcohol breaks down into sugar on digestion.
I've had a cup of sweet tea, it's taken the craving away but I feel very flat and low. The world is such a better place when you've had a drink.
Without alcohol life is empty.

Exisonfire · 01/01/2019 18:45

I feel I look a right mess.

Like a fookin drinker Blush

Come on name life without alcohol will be a lot better.

Get the wine witch off your shoulder and think of the better sleep you’ll get at the very least .

Sending you a DJ hug 😘.

HolyMountain · 01/01/2019 18:50

....and Jamie

lavenderhidcote · 01/01/2019 18:56

Can I join you please. Actually day 2 for me as was driving last night. We are having roast beef tonight and I am mentally so looking forward to the red wine to go with it. However it will just be water tonight. I need to look up the decent alternatives to booze but this is going to be so hard. Good luck all.

Olddognewtricks2019 · 01/01/2019 18:58

I did dry January last year but slipped right back into my bad drinking habits.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 01/01/2019 19:12

Can I join in? After Christmas drinking my skin looks dreadful, my eyes are dull and I'm just knackered from not getting proper sleep. I'm def going for January although I've a prearranged weekend with DH and our best friends in a few weeks which I know will be boozy so I'm accepting that will be a blip.
Like ThePurpleone I really enjoy having s drink so I find I never make it longer than January but hey ho, something is better than nothing I suppose!

stoplickingthetelly · 01/01/2019 19:16

I've never done it before either, but I'm going for it this year. Got a bottle of white open in the fridge so will use that up in cooking, but otherwise no booze at all until Feb.

namechangedyetagain · 01/01/2019 19:19

Ooh. Roast beef and a glass of red 🍷

GirlFliesHome · 01/01/2019 19:40

I'm in. I stopped drinking on 27th December though as in previous years I have had a massive blowout on 31st Dec and I wanted this year to get a good run at it. So I am on Day 6. Already I am sleeping so much better and am feeling calmer. (I have stress and anxiety and chronic insomnia).

I love the Aldi alcohol-free sparkling wine it is quite dry and hits the spot for me.

Screamqueenz · 01/01/2019 19:55

Made it through the day and two meals. Drinking no added sugar cranberry juice and sparkling water (50:50 mix).
Worrying about work tomorrow, but I know a lot of that is paranoia from yesterday's over indulgence (beer fear).
I'm looking forward to clearer skin, better sleep, more energy and more focus.

Alm1986 · 01/01/2019 20:03

GirlFliesHome silly question but is the alcohol free sparkling wine in the normal wine aisle at Aldi?

I'm in on this, day 6 for me. Would like to do 3 months for a variety of reasons but that means going through my birthday sober....

GirlFliesHome · 01/01/2019 20:40

Hi Alm yes at my Aldi it is with the proseccos. They also do a rose which is lovely. I have been trying all the AF sparklings that are around- and the Aldi is my favourite. Sainsbury's own is also pretty good and Echo Falls with green tea infusion is also good. The green tea off-sets the sweetness and DH told me today that the Aldi zeropointzero also has green tea in it. I highly recommend!

GirlFliesHome · 01/01/2019 20:44
