Were her eyes affected at the end? Or was I just seeing things?

craftqueen · 30/12/2018 02:24

Na, she was alright I think

craftqueen · 30/12/2018 02:25

What did you think of it?

EmbarrassingThing · 30/12/2018 02:31

I'm a scaredy cat and hate horrors and I thought it wasn't scary at all.

I did feel immense concern for the kiddos and felt worried for them but I didn't find the film scary.

I also read about the alternate ending and think that would have been better.

It's definitely more of a thriller than a horror.
I thought the acting when in the safe house at the beginning was appalling, particularly from John malcovitch. He didn't seem arsed in the slightest that his wife died.
As above I wanted the kids to survive; this was really the only reason I didn't switch it off to be honest.
The Road is a much better post apocalyptic film IMO.

lardass88 · 30/12/2018 08:47

I've watched this. Thought it was ok. What was the alternative ending?

abi2790 · 30/12/2018 08:51

I was expecting more from it. It was ok but I thought the ending was a bit rubbish and I would rather have been shown what it was they could see

Trinpy · 30/12/2018 09:00

It really got to me! I think because she is trying to protect her children and I've got small children so I identified with her character (as much as you can identify with someone in a ridiculous plot). I ended up having really horrible nightmares after watching it Blush.

I usually can't stand anything with Sandra Bullock in but I thought she was good in this. Almost everyone else was a but shit though and there were too many characters for them to develop each character fully.

HulksPurplePanties · 30/12/2018 09:07

I liked it, but I thought they should have kept the books ending. Much bleaker. I also thing they softened Sandra Bullocks character, although it would have been hard to show her hurting the kids on screen.

Esqueleto · 30/12/2018 09:07

Just read about the ending as written in the book; the people in the community at the end have forcibly made themselves blind in order to survive.

Whathappensnext2018 · 30/12/2018 09:09

I wondered if that’s what would have happened if they all made each other blind.

differentnameforthis · 30/12/2018 09:25

What was the alternative ending? The only thing I can find is what happened in the book...that all the people at the sanctuary purposely blinded themselves to avoid looking at the demons.

MyBreadIsEggy · 30/12/2018 09:30

I was really impressed with it!
I thought it was going to be one of those films where the social media hype is massive but the film itself is a let down, but I was pleasantly surprised!
Wasn’t as scary as I expected, but that Gary dude has given me the creeps for days since I watched it Confused
“Give me your children....they need to see! It’s beautiful!” Confused

Nannyplumbrocks · 30/12/2018 09:52

I liked it. It was all a bit ridiculous but once you accepted that, it was enjoyable. Agree about John Malcovich character not being bothered when his wife died, that was silly. And also how they all miraculously survived falling into the river at the rapids, that was rediculous even the birds survived Hmm But I related to her character trying to protect her children. Any other similar movies anyone would recommend?

ButtMuncher · 30/12/2018 10:32

Saw it last night. Was okay. The rapids bit was a bit OTT and they'd never had made it. Also made me wonder how they'll all survive in the middle of the forest. I called the blind thing out about quarter of the way through so wasn't that surprised at the ending.

I enjoyed the start with the flashbacks to when people got infected. The bit with Gary freaked me out and poor Tom! All that time surviving!

ButtMuncher · 30/12/2018 10:34

I also read somewhere that Bullocks character was a bitch for not naming her kids - but I got the vibe she was protecting them by not giving them specific names and identifying as their mother - when the whatever it was circled round them it seemed to hone in on weaknesses so keeping the children as emotionally detached from her as possible was an effort to save them?

dementedpixie · 30/12/2018 10:39

I quite enjoyed it and have bought the kindle book today

Esqueleto · 30/12/2018 10:45

Just thinking about the English man who wanted the babies to see.....How could the babies have killed themselves? Refused to feed and then starve? Wouldn't have had the same effect as the adults tbf.

HulksPurplePanties · 30/12/2018 11:10

It's been awhile since I read the book, but if I remember correctly she physically hurts them (hard pinches and slaps) if they disobey her. The level of her control over them was glossed over in the movie, as it was probably too disturbing, but she was trying in keep them alive in a situation where if they disobeyed her once they could all die was a real possibility. She couldn't allow them to be kids.

FlamingJuno · 30/12/2018 11:13

It wasn't nearly as good or as hold-your-breath scary as The Quiet Place. We thought the ending was telegraphed pretty far out, but still enjoyed it.

HarrySnotter · 30/12/2018 11:14

I liked it. I didn't think it was scary, just a bit gory in places. Didn't like that Gary at all, I knew he was a wrong un. The bit when he forces that woman's eyes open and she starts stabbing herself in the neck was grim.

MyBreadIsEggy · 30/12/2018 13:23

I’ve just been to Waterstones and got a copy of the book Grin

CheddarIsNotTheOnlyCheese · 30/12/2018 13:30

I was googling to see where I'd seen the actor who played Tom before. He was born in 1990. Sandra was born in 1964. I had no idea she was that old. She is so youthful and fresh faced (and believable as a new mother).

icannotremember · 30/12/2018 13:31

The book was creepy as hell, but you're never going to get that to translate to screen I don't think.

icannotremember · 30/12/2018 13:37

Yeah, there's a bit when she's talking about how she trained them never to wake up and look around by sitting waiting for then to wake up and then hitting them with something if they woke and opened their eyes without covering them. Seems vile but she had to find ways to keep them safe didn't she?

ButtMuncher · 30/12/2018 15:48

@Esqueleto good point. I thought something that could have been explored was that newborns were incapable of being infected because they can't focus enough to be able to make out distinct features. They recognise smells and sounds but their sight is compromised. I thought they'd go there with that when I saw it but didn't. It wouldn't save the children old enough to make out distinct features though.
