Ds’s headphones-I haven’t got a leg to stand on, have I?

Looking round for things to make up a full load this morning- found ds’s jeans on the floor of his bedroom and chucked them in. Headphones in the pocket-now dead. I can’t argue that it was his fault for not checking the pockets and putting them in the basket, can I? Particularly as he is insisting they didn’t need washing anyway? Bugger. Any other argument I could use to make it not my fault?

Why are you so determined to blame your DS?

And why is it more environmentally friendly to wash clothes that don't actually need it?

willyloman · 29/12/2018 17:09

definitely sneaky headphones' fault - they make them way too disposable these days; back in the day they would have been the size of donuts and no-one would have accidentally washed them...Manufacturers fault.

Bowchicawowow · 29/12/2018 17:09

I have done the same thing a few times. I think the headphones were OK but they weren’t the expensive type thank god.

ChristmasTwatteryDoesMyHeadIn · 29/12/2018 17:10

Ffs it’s lighthearted!

BertrandRussell unfortunately I think this is one of the “oh bollocks, sorry pal” moments but also a good way to get him to empty his pockets before leaving jeans on the floor moments Grin

bifflediffle · 29/12/2018 17:10

Sorry but your fault 100%. You would have been cheaper to have stuck your outfit on a quick wash.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 29/12/2018 17:11

Why didn't you just hand wash the outfit and spin it out in the machine? Would be more sensible?

AnxiousMama101 · 29/12/2018 17:11

Just accept the fact that you picked up his jeans from his bedroom floor, without his permission, not double checking the pockets before you put the washing on.

Admit to your son what you've done and replace his headphones asap.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/12/2018 17:12

Ohh , not sure on the rights'n'wrongs but :

(As the proud keeper of a 19yo DS)
Clothes on the floor of a teenage DS room are actually on the Floor-drobe so still clean and wearable

Past experience has taught me to always check pockets , even if he says he has to save my washing machine being mangled by random things like USB sticks and tissues (Top Tip it is so worth paying the extra for Andrex , they don't shred themselves all through the wash, I've found them still neatly scrunched in the pocket)

Any money found is a Laundry Maids' Perk therefore I keep it.

I think your DS will argue his case (and win) but try them in dry rice before you shell out .

Saucery · 29/12/2018 17:14

I’ve done that to 2 pairs of headphones, an inhaler (that made it it all the way to the dryer, alarmingly) and some important school stuff. My default is now a shrug and a “well, you KNOW I am a Washing Fiend”.

Bowchicawowow · 29/12/2018 17:14

There are some right pricks on mumsnet these days.

OrdinarySnowflake · 29/12/2018 17:14

sorry, you are just going to have to show the important example of admitting fault, apologising and offering to replace something you broke. He can then be gracious in his accepting of your apology.

(Half load is better than just washing things that don't need washing for the sake of it, it's still using up water that's not needed, and you wear out the clothes sooner so they need replacing more frequently)

Dothehappydance · 29/12/2018 17:15

OP why aren't you washing with a mangle? How dare you use electricity?

Oh and how dare you have a good relationship with your ds, surely he can't be many months from being at the MN approved age to be chucked out.

tinesltitties · 29/12/2018 17:16

Are they definitely broken?

I have washed and dried several pairs of Apple EarPods and they always survived.

I feel so sorry for the children who's parents are such cunts that they take issue with doing their washing.

GreenTulips · 29/12/2018 17:18

Can I recommend the apple ear pods? They wash extremely well at 40 degrees!

Bowchicawowow · 29/12/2018 17:19

Dothehappydance Personally I make my dc take their clothes to the nearest stream and bash out the excess water on rocks. Works a treat.

trilbydoll · 29/12/2018 17:20

I've washed dh's headphones several times and they've always survived. Just standard headp tho, not fancy Bluetooth ones. The headphone socket on his phone is not working at the moment but there's no suggestion that the squeaky clean headphones are the issue!

TheFallenMadonna · 29/12/2018 17:20

I washed my DH's specs. My argument that they should have been in a case, not just loose in his shirt pocket, was not well received.

ChristmasTwatteryDoesMyHeadIn · 29/12/2018 17:21

Well that’s good to know! Grin

Ethel36 · 29/12/2018 17:29

You should have checked his pockets especially when he didn't ask for them to be washed. Just buy him new head phones.

mumsastudent · 29/12/2018 17:30

are you sure they were working before you washed them

AlbertWinestein · 29/12/2018 17:31

This thread is bonkers. And it’s curiously making me want to go and do all my teenagers’ washing for them. Headphones and all.

guacatrole · 29/12/2018 17:32

How is it any better for the environment to wash a full load when half of it doesn't need washing that to wash a half load in any case?

That's quite a good point actually.

Also as a teen I'd have been furious if my parents started rifling my clothes. If they aren't in the basket don't wash! You can't go through his pockets so it just doesn't make sense to do it, or you end up in your current situation.

mum11970 · 29/12/2018 17:34

What earphones are they? We’ve had apple earphones go through the wash many times with no ill effect.

bifflediffle · 29/12/2018 17:35

exactly. Surely the energy to wash dry iron a full load when half didn't need washed is more than a half load?

Butteredghost · 29/12/2018 17:38

I'm afraid you don't have a leg to stand on, your son could point out the Levin's CEO advises that jeans don't ever need to be washed. So he could say he wasn't planning on washing them ever.
