Looking to join the NT am I right in thinking if we join the Scotland NT which is cheaper we can use it all over the UK?

There are no offers on membership the Scrooge's!

Yes though there's some dispute over car parking I think

LookImAHooman · 28/12/2018 21:17

There are no offers on membership the Scrooge's!

They are a charity...

I don’t know about Scotland but remember hearing it works for NZ NT.

FitzChivalry · 28/12/2018 21:19

I have emailed NTS re parking in England and Wales and they stated same parking rights as English NT. I kept the email incase I was challeneged, but never have been.

QueenOfIce · 28/12/2018 21:26

Great thank you!

It's cheaper, you can use it in both scotland and England, yet the England one is more expensive and can only be used there. So not sure why scotland NT are the scrooge! Wink

Fabulouslyfatatfifty · 28/12/2018 21:28

Scottish NT won't be investing in maintaining/running the English properties you visit!!

I visit my local NT place 3 times a week for a walk and they get money every time I visit.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/12/2018 21:30

Don't be such a cheapskate! (Although it'll be good for NTS). Do you not feel slightly bad about not contributing to the National Trust when presumably it's their properties you'll be primarily using?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/12/2018 21:31

And as for Scrooges, you're the one trying to rip off the NT....

Fabulouslyfatatfifty · 28/12/2018 21:31

You can use your card in Scotland and elsewhere in the world homemadegin, I have done so when on holiday.

Harry354 · 28/12/2018 21:34

Lots of NT places now scan membership cards but the Scottish ones don’t work. So have to go and talk to people in ticket office and some say can’t park and some say can. Would love some clarity on that subject.

WindyWednesday · 28/12/2018 21:40

It’s not that much cheaper. Maybe £11 a year cheaper.

It’s not good for NT. They don’t get any benefits from it. They can’t use your membership to improve the property you visit, I think average amount they can claim back is about £2, but it’s £0 for Scottish NT.

WindyWednesday · 28/12/2018 21:42

Personally I’d be embarrassed to hand over the card if I wasn’t a genuine Scottish member.

homemadegin · 28/12/2018 21:43

Apologies fabulous, my mistake. We Live in Scotland and bought for PIL Christmas. My SIL said this was the case. I see when you click in where you can use it says England wales and Ireland, then when you scroll down it also mentions scotland and the world as a separate part.

It is cheaper though so don't get the OP scrooge comment. Confused

Harry354 · 28/12/2018 21:44

You can also take more children in so far easier to take friends on play there.

WindyWednesday · 28/12/2018 21:45

If you buy the English NT online you get 3 months free. Maybe NTscotland don’t offer the same.

JaiNotJay · 28/12/2018 21:48

I'm a member of the NTS but I live in Scotland. I find it strange that people would join an organisation for a country they don't even live in just to save a few quid.

Fabulouslyfatatfifty · 28/12/2018 21:56

I agree Jai, crops up on here frequently though.

rslsys · 28/12/2018 21:58

If you are over 60 and have been a NT member for 5 years, you are eligible for senior (reduced) membership. They don't like you asking, in our case we were told "most older people are happy to pay the full membership fee"!
It was English Heritage who told me it existed . . .

SarahC92 · 28/12/2018 22:05

We have the Scottish one as it's cheaper. And for those saying we're ripping off the English NT, it isn't exactly cheap, and we don't always save on the entrance fees as we don't go that often!

Sorry - couldn't remember how to post links!

QueenOfIce · 28/12/2018 22:10

I got the Scottish one and I don't feel awful at all given we spend a lot of time in Scotland and NI so we can use our new membership in all places.

I meant NT are Scrooge's for not giving discount memberships very often but I completely understand they are a charity and have some beautiful places to maintain.

OP posts:
HairyToity · 28/12/2018 22:12

I think the Scottish NT gets funding from the Scottish government. It is therefore cheaper. English NT doesn't and can't compete. They have a reciprocal membership relationship, but when you use Scottish NT membership at an English NT property the English NT property doesn't get any revenue except tearoom spend.

If you are desperately short of money, then do it, but if not then morally I think its better to buy the English membership. My auntie works for NT and its always one of her pet peeves English visitors with Scottish membership.
