6kg hand luggage......!

TwoNoisyBoys · 27/12/2018 23:46

I’m off to the canaries for 4 nights at the end of January Smile and I can’t wait! I always go hand luggage only when I go away. So I was happy to book without a hold bag. But I’m checking the details I realise that this airline only allow 6kg, not the 10 I usually manage fine with! So I’m looking for some hints and tips on how to manage please....all ingenious ideas welcome! TIA Smile

Do a Heidi and wear everything. And buy one of those coats with loads of pockets and stuff them full.

MollyHuaCha · 27/12/2018 23:48

Buy mini toiletries from Boots after you've checked in. Discard any leftovers before return journey.

But you might feel this is a bit of a waste of packaging.

JaiNotJay · 27/12/2018 23:51

Will the airline really weigh hand luggage though? I'd probably take the risk and go a bit over, maybe not the full 10kg though.

I'm a frequent flyer, always with just hand luggage, and have never had my luggage weighed. I think you'll be fine (fingers crossed!)

Do they allow a separate handbag? Transfer heaviest things to that. Try and put things in your pockets or under your coat too.

Jack65 · 28/12/2018 00:04

A pair of shorts, a sweatshirt and a dress, pair of flipflops, bikini. What on earth are you taking?

SierraSmythe · 28/12/2018 00:05

Oh and another trick I use. You can carry on an additional duty free plastic bag with your purchase. You can buy something and then stuff your heavier things in with it.

TwoNoisyBoys · 28/12/2018 00:23

Some great ideas here thank you! Jack65, I was thinking I’ll also need knickers, a beach towel, maybe a change of clothes, you know.....Wink but thanks for your streamlining ideas!

Re the weighing, we’re flying with Thomas Cook and a friend said they definitely weigh.....

You can easily do 4 nights on 6 kilos!

Plan your outfits carefully, so you have, say, a skirt that works with a couple of different tops.

Plan accessories similarly - I'd probably bring one or two necklaces that work with everything.

Only two pairs of shoes - flip flops and whatever you need for dinner, etc.

Tiny toiletries.

Kindle, not books.

I'd probably be inclined, if I'm honest, to buy a beach towel out there and either leave it behind me or give it to someone who's arriving as a spare. Or if that's too wasteful for you, then pack a hammam towel instead, which also doubles as a beach wrap/sarong thingy.

Murinae · 28/12/2018 00:35

I bought a micro fibre beach towel. They are really light.

starzig · 28/12/2018 00:54

I am sure you can still put your luggage in hold after the tickets are bought. 6kg is a lot to be taking on board.

Jack65 · 28/12/2018 00:54

Never bother with knickers, but i do take a sarong/towel. Its 4 nights. I took a carry on to Australia for 2 months and it was fine. You can only wear one thing at a time so i figure, wear one, wash one and you still have a spare. Its the minimalist approach.

Twotabbycats · 28/12/2018 01:05

I think the problem is many cabin bags weigh 2-3 kilos before you even put anything in! Maybe get a lightweight rucksack? And yes wear as many clothes as you can, should be easy in winter Smile

Weenurse · 28/12/2018 03:53

Essential toiletries toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, moisturiser.
No makeup.
Mini shampoo and conditioner if not supplied by hotel.
Bathers, flip flops and wear a pair of sandals that will do fo day and night. Also wear shorts or 3/4 pants on plane.
Undies, bras, shorts, T shirts. Light weight dress or 2. for outings. Sarong for beach cover.
Resorts generally supply towels, if not buy one there.
Just did 4 nights with this bag over Christmas.

Weenurse · 28/12/2018 03:54

Weighed in at 4.8 kg when checked by cabin crew.
Yes they weigh them in Australia

TwoNoisyBoys · 28/12/2018 17:30

I’ll have to buy a new hold-all type thing, as my case weighs just over 2kg empty! Thanks for all the suggestions, careful co-ordination and buying toiletries at the airport will be the way to go I reckon!

You probably cheaper just booking a suitcase in the hold..

ChippyMinton · 28/12/2018 17:33

Shove it all in carrier bag to save weight?

Frouby · 28/12/2018 17:38

We have just come back from Tenerife with TC and they didn't weigh our bags.

I would take 2 dresses for evening wear, 2 bikinis and 2 pair of shorts. Wear a pair of strappy sandals to travel in, flipflops in your case. Buy toiletries/Sun cream at the airport. Mini makeup in handbag (watch for liquids tho). 8 pair of knickers (1 for day, 1 for night time). 4 vest tops for daytime with shorts. Buy a beach towel there for about 4 euros. Job done. A jacket or hoody as well that you can travel in for the evenings which can be a bit cooler.

soulrider · 28/12/2018 17:45

In the canaries at the end of January, it's not guaranteed that you'll only need light clothing, it can be chilly.

The only time i've had my hand luggage weighed was with thomas cook and their 6kg limit. I'd pay for a bag to avoid the hassle of trying to keep under the limit tbh. They weighed before security so putting heavy stuff in a duty free bag after security wouldn't work

BarbaraofSevillle · 28/12/2018 18:08

I've had my hand luggage weighed with Thomas Cook. It was 7 kg so they told me I had to take stuff out. I put my phone, kindle and purse in my coat pockets and got the weight down enough that they were happy with. Totally pointless exercise as I put it all back when I was out of sight of the hold baggage drop off desk.

But if you are hand luggage only they might not weigh it, but make sure you have big pockets just in case.

notacooldad · 28/12/2018 18:17

Some do.
I was suprised earlier this year. Our bags weren't weighed going out but everyone's was coming back. Quite a few people got caught out. People were frantically trying to wear extra clothes and put things in their pockets. I must admit I was worried but was suprised when mine came in at 7kgs

Notatallobvious · 28/12/2018 18:25

Buy a cheap beach towel when you get there...but to be honest if I was going with someone I'd just amend my booking and pay for a shared hold bag. I'm bloody sick of airlines keep making their rules more difficult to stick to so they can charge for bits here and there, I'd rather they just added £20 onto the flight and include a bag/chill out a bit

zebra · 28/12/2018 18:36

I find by the time you've purchased toiletries, sun cream, beach towels etc there it's usually cheaper just to book a hold bag, especially if there's a few of you going.
