What wouldn't you spend a huge amount of money on?

Vaguely linked to the lottery thread and some threads about Xmas presents.

If you were rich beyond your wildest dreams, what things could you just not spend excessive amounts on?

For me I remember seeing an advert for face cream with diamonds in it for £100's and being completely unable to fathom spending that much.

Clothes would definitely have a upper limit of about £200 per item for jumpers or jeans etc and I think it still shop highstreet mostly.

I'd still buy own brand medicines!

I'm sure there's an awful lot more but my mind's gone blank, what about everyone else?

A huge house. I don't like big houses, I don't feel safe in them. I'd be happy with an average size house.

Designer clothing. Not interested.

I'd still shop at Asda for my food as well.

Things that I would spend a lot of money on - travel (and stay in nice hotels), a cleaner, and a car with driver as I can't drive.

nottakingthisanymore · 27/12/2018 22:14

Handbags. I don’t understand how a bag can cost more than a car.

AfterSchoolWorry · 27/12/2018 22:14

Yeah, clothes. I couldn't spend 5k on any item.
Food, I'm easily pleased with food, although I have cooking so I might get a cook.
Jewellery, I'd have a couple of nice things but nothing crazy.

I would spend on property, travel, education, health, family and good cars.

I wouldn’t buy a new car.

Or spend on beauty treatments.

Or get sky

Or fancy shoes

Or jewellery

GobblersKnob · 27/12/2018 22:18

I'd would be much easier to list the things I would consider spending a lot on which would be education, travel, food and health. Really very little interest in stuff.

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 27/12/2018 22:18

A car, I'd buy a half decent used one, I don't think my attitude to money would change and I'd really appreciate it and wouldn't pay over the odds for something that losses 2 so much value the second you buy it.

PinkFizzz · 27/12/2018 22:19

I genuinely can't imagine spending a fortune on anything. I'm easily pleased and wouldn't like to rattle around in a huge house or drive a fancy car.

Id probably have a huge collection of shoes but even then it would be high street stuff, just more of it!

One thing I can never get my head around is people spending a fortune on designer baby items that can only be used for a few months before they need to be passed on/ put away.

CmdrIvanova · 27/12/2018 22:19

I wouldn't bother with an enormous house. I would move from my 3 bed to a 5 bed on the same estate :) I can't see me spending loads on clothes but I could picture a good few new pairs of boots and trainers. And I definitely wouldn't buy a massive car that doesn't fit in any parking spaces round here.

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 27/12/2018 22:19

Excuse the typos, I didn't proof read...m

FissionChips · 27/12/2018 22:19

Bin bags
Toilet paper

ThatPeskyElf · 27/12/2018 22:21

Ooh good thread... I only like Asda own brand pasta sauce so that would have to stay... hate designer clothes- all trash- so I’ll stick to Dorothy Perkins thank you.... quite like my W reg car so would get rid but might by a smarter one for special occasions, maybe a vw not a Porsche which I’ve heard are a bit rubbish anyway... I like a bit of Pantene so that can stay... and absolutely would never by branded Jaffa cakes! Oh the horror! I’d def stick to smart price ones- so much nicer!

ThatPeskyElf · 27/12/2018 22:22

*Wouldn’t get rid of my car

TokyoSushi · 27/12/2018 22:27

I wouldn't really want to change my life, just have this life, but nicer.

So move to a bigger house in same area (max house around here us about £400K) drive a nicer car, keep DC's at the same school, wear nicer clothes etc, but not ridiculous, just from places like John Lewis.

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't move away and start living a super fancy life somewhere.

meow1989 · 27/12/2018 22:28

Agreed on huge house, I'd like a nice detatched 5 bed (with pool obvs Wink) but I have no need for somewhere big enough t get lost in! I like the family to be together not sprawled across their own wings.

Also agree on things like toilet paper, I'd add bleach too.

I'd pay extra for toiletries for reasons such as not being tested on animals though.

I think there's a limit to how all singing the humble toaster could be so I'd keep mine.

U also wouldn't replace my Ikea furniture until it was worn out - I'm proud of the way I've got my house ad would feel a bit cheated if I just replaced it all because I could suddenly.

Huge house here too I just wouldn't feel safe!
5 bed would be my limit really.
But I would splash on large house in London.
I also can't be bothered with hugely expensive handbags, designers clothes.

I adore lovely things, I love pretty glam clothes but they don't need to cost the earth.

My money would probably go on house in London and personal trainers. I'd have a few, yoga, pilates and some for more intensive work and someone to cycle with.

Nacreous · 27/12/2018 22:48

I would definitely spend more money on good food I think: I love food and we eat well but I shop savvy with cheap cuts of meat etc so it would be lovely to stop bothering to do that and just cook whatever I liked. But it wouldn't be crazy money.

I think the same would apply to most things: I'd like a slightly nicer car, with better headlights that was a bit more powerful, and had a bit of a bigger boot and five doors. I don't need a really fancy fancy car, just would be nice to have cruise control and a bigger petrol tank for a 500 mile trog down France.

I'd spend a bit more on clothes: would be nice to buy more things from phase 8 and Hobbs rather than hunt them out second hand or hugely reduced.

The house on the other hand would be a bit further into extravagant:
I'd like a study, and a sewing/craft room and a spare room, rather than the three-in-one I have at the moment. I love hosting so lots of space would be great for me. I'd probably have a home gym too, and ideally a pool, so then you are into mega extravagant territory.

Jsmith99 · 27/12/2018 23:01

Clothes. Recently, in Selfridges, I looked at a perfectly ordinary t-shirt with a designer logo on it. £89. They also stocked designer label trainers for £450.

Bollocks to that, however rich I was.

CountFosco · 27/12/2018 23:02

I'd happily spend on property, buy a good plot on the edge of town and get an architect designed house with a lovely garden (and lovely gardener) and have some gorgeous furniture. I love clothes so would happily increase the amount on each item (I don't need more clothes). Would not spend on beauty treatments or spas, I have no interest. I would eat at great restaurants a lot more than I can afford to at the moment and travel abroad with the kids every year.

Work is a tricky one. I do a really interesting job and wouldn't want to give it up because I'm not sure any leisure interest could be as satisfying. But it would be nice to have more holiday time but how to do that without ending up sidelined and not given the interesting opportunities at work.

elibee · 27/12/2018 23:29

Surely the whole point of being rich is being able to not care what something costs?
Is it 5p or is £500 - who cares it's neat and I want it.

Faster · 27/12/2018 23:32

Holidays. I don’t get why people want to go to places like Dubai. It doesn’t float my boat. I’d rather a tent (a big one if I had the money) in the Lake District.

Iamnobirdandnonetensnaresme · 27/12/2018 23:44

Clothes - I balk at £10 for a tshirt so designer ones have no chance
Jewellery- never really been fussed about it. Would get myself a nice eternity ring though.

Flash car - makes you a target

I would have a cleaner come 2 or 3 times a week and maybe have someone come in a cook a couple of times a month.

W0rriedMum · 27/12/2018 23:49

I would never pay for business or 1st class flights. I travel in them for business and they are definitely not worth the money.

Also posh jewellery - no interest!

ragged · 28/12/2018 03:52

I was gonna say 1st class flights is one thing I could imagine spending money on. I don't sleep on airplanes if I can't stretch out.

AGHHHH · 28/12/2018 03:57

A car. I'd like a nice one, but I wouldn't be arsed about spending hundreds of thousands.

And cosmetics. The cheaper ones can often be as good as more expensive ones. I wouldn't start paying hundreds for creams.

Weenurse · 28/12/2018 04:02

Wedding, we spent too much 30 years ago!
I would just do up our house and not move as we have great neighbors.
I like my car, so keep that.
I hate clothes shopping, so no change there.
I would like to buy organic and cruelty free, so maybe spend more there.
I dream of paying off the debt of a small country it I win millions.
