Do you feel crap after flu jab or is this actual flu?

I work in the nhs and the ward i was on had 5 cases of confirmed flu who i had direct contact with. I hadnt had my flu jab so got it on way home after my shift.

2 days later i've got a high temp and feel shocking. Is this actual flu or just a side effect?

Thanks

The flu jab takes 2-3 weeks before it's effective so it's probably flu. Hope it isn't too bad, DD, DM and I had it last year, and it was awful.

MyOtherProfile · 27/12/2018 08:05

Sounds like you have the flu. It was quite late to havw the jab so you will already have got it before you had the jab. Next year I really recommend getting it as early as you can.

jessstan2 · 27/12/2018 08:08

My husband felt crap, had 'flu symtoms, following the 'flu jab but it really didn't last long and wasn't the 'flu. I hope the same for you.

The jab doesn't cover every strain of 'flu and it's still possible to catch something. Don't think the worse though, give it a day or so.

If you have flu you really will know it, you will think you’re dying basically. It’s horrendous.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 27/12/2018 08:14

If may be and may be something different. Were you geared up (apron, gloves and mask) when you had contact/were in their cubicles?

juneau · 27/12/2018 08:15

I felt rubbish after having the flu jab this year (most years I don't, just have a sore arm for 24 hours afterwards). Feeling rubbish and having flu are two different things though. Can you get out of bed and function semi-normally? If so, it doesn't sound like flu. If you feel like death and can barely raise your head, it's flu.

HelloToJasonIsaacs · 27/12/2018 08:15

Too some to say really. Either it’s side effects of the jab and you’ll shake it off in 48 hours or you’ve got unlucky and caught flu and you’ll probably get worse. Cross fingers.

MamaLovesMango · 27/12/2018 08:16

If you have ‘flu, it’ll be ‘flu not the jab.

For the jab to be best effective you need to get it in October/November. If you have ‘flu (and not a cold...) you will have been carrying the virus before you had the jab.

Oliack1417 · 27/12/2018 08:20

Flu's truly awful. You wouldn't be able to post on Mumsnet if you had it!

TinyMarie · 27/12/2018 08:22

I felt a bit rubbish for a couple of days after the jab but having had actual flu once before, it was nothing in comparison.
I don't think I managed to get out of bed for a week!

drinkswineoutofamug · 27/12/2018 08:25

The flu jab doesn't give you the flu. It's not a live virus.
You may of caught something off the patients.
Next yr when the flu jab team come round have your jab done. Our trust are asking staff why they aren't having their injections and also offering jabs to family members of poorly patients for free.

OldGrinch · 27/12/2018 08:26

I had the flu jab this year and felt pretty rubbish for several days after like a mini flu. Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Loobieloo27 · 27/12/2018 08:28

Had apron and gloves but no masks as was none on the ward. Helpful. Its reassuring to hear could just be a symptom.

I've managed to get out of bed and go downstairs although my head feels like its going to blow so hopefully not the real thing, the shakes and weakness is awful

OP posts:
juneau · 27/12/2018 08:31

Ah - the shakes and weakness is not good - that could be flu. Do you have to go into work today?

ThinkOfAWittyNameLater · 27/12/2018 08:35

get a large supply of water and Go back to bed

I hope you feel better soon from the flu

HelloToJasonIsaacs · 27/12/2018 08:36

She didn’t say “have I got flu from the jab” drinkswine. She said “am I experiencing side effects from the jab?” And the answer is: yes it sounds a lot like the common and well documented side effects of the flu jab which are a high fever and feeling like shit for a couple of days. OTOH it also sounds a lot like like the beginning of flu or low-severity flu so only time will tell.

FrigideBarjot · 27/12/2018 08:36

My only side effect from the jab was a sore arm.

Loobieloo27 · 27/12/2018 08:37

No meant to be there tomorrow afternoon but have a 6 and 3 year old to look after today Confused

OP posts:
justforareply · 27/12/2018 08:41

I'd doubt it was a side effect - maybe a cold starting? Maybe flu starting? Time will tell
I have flu jab each year and not had any adverse effects

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 27/12/2018 08:42

You shouldn't have gone in without a mask! If none on ward you need to go and get some! Bit silly Grin

juneau · 27/12/2018 09:13

Okay, well you should know by tomorrow whether it's flu or not. I'd see what kids films are on today and plan a duvet and film day for yourself and the kids. As you work in the NHS I'm sure you know how to take care of yourself, so I'll avoid telling you how to do that!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/12/2018 09:25

It sounds like flu I think. Try and line things up so it's as easy as possible to look after the dc - call in any favours you are owed, let work know asap so they can get cover. Sounds like the hospital are going to have a problem on their hands.

Next year, flu jab in October.

Lweji · 27/12/2018 09:32

This is kind of relevant, but what type of job do you have on the NHS?

Hospital infections are a problem and tbh you don't seem to have medical or nurse training.
I'd say that it looks like procedures could (should?) be reviewed where you work. Surely they don't want all staff on a ward to stay home with the flu.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/12/2018 10:56

You can get mild flu like symptoms from the jab, but it sounds more like you’ve got flu tbh. Usually if I get symptoms other than a sore arm, it’s a slight fever and feeling a bit urgh.

Drogosnextwife · 27/12/2018 10:58

My kids got the nasal spray at school and the youngest was very unwell about 2 days later, had to be off school for a day or 2, then it just disapeared.
