kids and films they find illogically scary

My 7 year old is hiding in the kitchen because he doesn't like scary films - we're watching 'A Christmas Story' Confused

Yesterday we watched Home Alone - his choice, he loves that film.

The day before he thoroughly enjoyed Guardians of The Galaxy, which I think is a 12...

He's DC 3 so has seen a few mild 12 rated films and the whole StarWars series with DH and older siblings.

The film he was most upset by was The Iron Giant...

Anyone else's kids unworried by films rated too old for them but traumatised by wholesome old fashioned U rated kids' films? [santa]

My daughter sobbed at the good dinosaur!!

And my little boy was terrified of hook!

cariadlet · 25/12/2018 18:55

When dd was about 5 we took her to see Ratatouille at the cinema. We had to walk out halfway through because she couldn't cope with the tension. My dp was most disappointed (I think he would have stayed to watch the ending and find out what happened if I'd let him!)

DS is 6, loves all the star wars movies but was terrified by the Incredibles Confused

I was (and still am) of Gremlins. My mothet took my brother and I to see it in the cinema as kids. I was horrified, my mother took me outside but my brother would not leave. The very kind ladies in the kiosk looked after me while my mother tried to unsuccessfully remove my brother from the cinema.

dementedma · 25/12/2018 19:18

dds were terrified by Miss Trunchbull in Matilda

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 25/12/2018 19:19

Ds is terrified of toy story. We haven't been able to watch it for over a year

CigarsofthePharoahs · 25/12/2018 19:22

My youngest hated The Lego Movie for ages. He didn't like "the glowy eye man."
Could be worse. The child of a friend of mine couldn't watch Peter Rabbit. Too scary, the fox in particular. However they were fine with Dangermouse which you'd think would be worse.

flapjackfairy · 25/12/2018 19:23

My daughter was hysterical watching the original Mr bean film in the cinema. He destroys a priceless artwork and tries to repair it with a cartoon like face ( v funny ).
She was so worried he was in big trouble we had to go out and calm her down. Oh bless her. Those were the days ! Now she watches anything without flinching.

Soph88 · 25/12/2018 19:23

We watched Santa Paws a couple of weeks ago with DD4. She sobbed for me to switch it off When the dog changed into a toy dog. It's on Disney and a U!

EspressoPatronum · 25/12/2018 19:24

Ds is scared of Baymax from big hero 6. Not the scary bad guy... The big squishy friendly robot. 🤷😆

blueskiesandforests · 25/12/2018 19:25

purplecorkheart wasn't Gremlins a 15 when it came out? I know it's funny but it is scary, especially if you were young enough to need looking after by the kiosk ladies!

The good dinosaur, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Toy Story - those are more in the category only kid logic could make frightening! Xmas Grin

Tbh Roald Dahl is quite dark... I kind of get that ... [santa]Xmas Grin

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - the childcatcher terrified them.

blueskiesandforests · 25/12/2018 19:27

flapjackfairy I'm with your DD on the original Mr Beans - I find them unwatchable, but those dc3 (along with DH and dc1 and 2) loves...

I have no idea to be honest. Our local cinema used to do a kids movie package (ticket and a gift pack). I assume Mom never say the age guideline as normally she would avoid PG movies when we were small.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 25/12/2018 19:31

DD hates Wallace and Gromit - mainly Wallace, she doesn't like his face "moving" - apparently he's 'claiming to be something he's not.' On the plus side, now she's 13 she can articulate this and leave the room Grin For years we had to hide the DVDs and switch the telly off quickly. Even Shaun the sheep wasn't safe as he was friends with Wallace.

TheSheepofWallSt · 25/12/2018 19:31

DS is 2.

The polar express - not the creepy children, the runaway train but. DS loves steam trains and it breaks his heart to see it come off the track.

The first fifteen minutes of Up have him in hysterics (very sensitive to sad music)

Anything where things aren’t going “as they ought to”- DS is quite pedantic and likes everything to be “just so”- mild jeopardy (eg train coming off tracks) upsets him because it signifies things are “going wrong”. 🤷🏼‍♀️ That’s what I can make out anyway- he is just 2. Grin

LittleLlamaontheduskyroad · 25/12/2018 19:35

My DD hates the Oompa Loompas in the original version of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. She won't even let us sing the song without running off crying.

Adviceandguidanceneeded · 25/12/2018 19:44

I used to be petrified of Pinocchio , I watched it again recently , not terrifying but pretty messed up !

Soubriquet · 25/12/2018 19:46

My dc keep wanting to watching coraline

I won’t let them just yet. That film freaks me out!!

MemoriesOfAnotherFuture · 25/12/2018 19:48

Not necessarily scary but my 4yo sobbed at the end of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt last night because she was “just so sad” that the bear just wanted to be friends and had to go home to his cave by himself.

2b1c51 · 25/12/2018 20:04

We had to leave the 'My little pony' movie early because DD found it too scary....

blueskiesandforests · 25/12/2018 20:21

MemoriesOfAnotherFuture my dc2 did that too! I wasn't allowed to read that book to dc3, who loved it, unless I closed dc3's bedroom door, as dc2 wouldn't be able to sleep for worrying about the rejected bear!

Not so much DC as frankly they are quite robust (although a Friday night at Freddie crossover with Minecraft video that slipped through kids tube censorship caused several nights if nightmares)

But when I was a kid I was too scared to sit through the my little pony film in the cinema because I was scared of the purple goo covering pony land (I was well under 10 and am now kissing 40 so that tells you how long ago)

My DM had to take me out and has never forgiven me in thirty yearsGrin

CurlsandCurves · 25/12/2018 20:30

I still can’t get my head around the fact that ‘E.T.’ Is classed as a children’s film. I only saw clips of it as a child and it scared the heck out of me! Don’t like it much now...
