kids and films they find illogically scary

My 7 year old is hiding in the kitchen because he doesn't like scary films - we're watching 'A Christmas Story' Confused

Yesterday we watched Home Alone - his choice, he loves that film.

The day before he thoroughly enjoyed Guardians of The Galaxy, which I think is a 12...

He's DC 3 so has seen a few mild 12 rated films and the whole StarWars series with DH and older siblings.

The film he was most upset by was The Iron Giant...

Anyone else's kids unworried by films rated too old for them but traumatised by wholesome old fashioned U rated kids' films? [santa]

Paddington- dd1 was 3 or 4 and we had to leave the cinema coz she was so distressed that Paddington's parents died, also Monsters inc - can't remember the exact reason but something to do with sully.

My dd is 5 loves Coraline. It scares me and I swear if it was real people and not cartoonish it would be an 18.

More things scare me than dd 😂 I'm a wimp.
Child catcher - definitely
Pinocchio - turning into donkeys
8 below (I think that's what it's called) had me sobbing.
Me dh and dh all cried at the good dinosaur.
And obviously I loved the lion King but cried every time Mufasa died.
The jungle book freaked me out as a kid, think it was the birds (can't think of what type they were)

abbsisspartacus · 25/12/2018 20:50

The vultures? They look like the Beatles!

Cats vrs dogs dd couldn't get through the first scene

Ds had nightmares for weeks after seeing brief encounter, he kept dreaming that I was going to run off with a Trevor Howard type!

RangerLady · 25/12/2018 20:58

Dd1 screamed at me to turn off the original Disney Cinderella as she was terrified when the dog chased the mean cat. She was nearly 4! I'd love to watch films with her but feel like it's not worth it if that scares her!!

Unescorted · 25/12/2018 21:00

I am your child 35 years on. We just have really good imaginations and fill the gaps in with the worst.

AhhhHereItGoes · 25/12/2018 21:01

Kids logic is strange.

DD1 is 5 and finds many Disney sequences scary but doesn't think witches or zombies look scary 🤷‍♀️

pinkiepie1 · 25/12/2018 21:11

Yes vultures!!!! I was trying to describe them to dh who has never seen jungle book haha it was very stressful lol

bumblebee39 · 25/12/2018 21:17

Not a film but both my kids are pretty scared of mr tumble 😂

AnnaMagnani · 25/12/2018 21:24

I grudgingly allowed DH and DM to watch A Muppet Christmas Carol today as I am scared of the muppets and I thought I might have got over it.

5 minutes in, I was not over it and retreated to the kitchen to make Christmas dinner.

Wetdressinggownsleeve · 25/12/2018 21:26

I remember being shown Edward Scissorhands at school and being terrified.. I was in my 20's before I realised it wasn't a horror film.. I was commenting that it would never be allowed to be shown in a school today Blush

I stand by the opinion that Tim Burton should not be allowed to make children's films!

And yy to Coraline, although dd loves it!

blueskiesandforests · 25/12/2018 21:43

Unescorted absolutely - all my kids have good imaginations and are also often more scared by books than films (the end of the first Harry Potter book so terrified DD that she couldn't finish it, and her nightmares were actually cured by watching the film which was far less terrifying than what her imagination was supplying!).

I'm just sometimes struck by the incongruity - stuff that should be a bit too scary is enjoyable, something that shouldn't be scary at all and is made for little kids is terrifying beyond endurance!

DD loves Coraline. She is usually unmoved by scary stuff, and has watched all sorts of films and series she probably shouldn't have.

She did have nightmares after watching the good dinosaur though. I think it was the dad being washed away in a flood or something?

MouseRatFan · 25/12/2018 21:48

My dd is terrified of the lamp at the beginning of pixar movies... Shock

Ribbonsonabox · 25/12/2018 22:02

My 4yo watched parts of the woman in black when we were in a hotel room and I'd been in the bathroom and not noticed what was on the TV... hes now obsessed with it and always asks for films with spooky houses and ghosts! However he has the care bears film and hes terrified of that! Hides in the other room for parts of it ...... makes no sense at all

Fatted · 25/12/2018 22:07

My 3YO cried at the Land Before Time. Not when the mum dies, when the evil trex who had spent the entire film trying to eat them got his comeuppance!!

BikeRunSki · 25/12/2018 22:12

Dd (then 4) made us leave the cinema halfway through “Finding Dory”.

2 years later, she refuses to try and finish it.

Knitwit101 · 25/12/2018 22:13

One of mine was upset at Frozen because of the power to freeze things with just your mind. What if you freeze something or someone you love by mistake and can't get them back? We had to leave in the middle and it took no the to persuade him to watch the DVD and see that it all came good in the end. He's still a bit creeper out by it tbh

LonelyandTiredandLow · 25/12/2018 22:16

Dr is 7 and frequently covers her eyes and crawls into my lap on the least scary moments; usually emotionally charged scenes. For e.g. when she saw Buttons at the panto falling in love with Cinderella and it was unrequited..."It's too scary I hate it! I want to go home!" Complete with hands over her ears and on my lap etc. Same with any film where emotional content isn't simple or happy.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 25/12/2018 22:22

101 Dalmatians...the original cartoon version.

Lord of the Rings, however, with all those orcs- apparently not scary at all!

headinhands · 25/12/2018 22:26

Not a film character but ds was fucking terrified of Spooky Spoon.

SoapyBubbl · 25/12/2018 22:40

My six year old couldn't handle The Jungle Book today - he is fine with Jurassic Park Confused

Sadik · 25/12/2018 22:47

"The first fifteen minutes of Up have him in hysterics (very sensitive to sad music)"

A little way into Up with all of us sobbing away dd - then aged about 6 or so said piteously "I thought this was meant to be a nice film..." You and me too, kid....

tothesea · 25/12/2018 23:14

DS2 age 7 can watch Jaws, Jurassic Park, Planet of the Apes...asked to turn off Swallows and Amazons the other day..”too scary!!”

AGnu · 25/12/2018 23:32

My DC, 7yo & 5yo, wouldn't watch more than the first minute or so of The Gruffalo the other day. They adored the book as toddlers but apparently "it's different when it's a film." They freak out at so many films that it's getting a bit embarrassing around friends/cousins when I have to vet every suggested film carefully & come across as ridiculously over-protective when I'd happily let them watch it if they'd not coming sobbing to me the second there was even a hint of mild peril! Hmm Obviously, I don't let on to them that I find it embarrassing & will continue to pretend I don't notice the raised eyebrows when I claim Inside Out isn't "suitable"...
