Will it still be ok to cook? 😬

WhirlwindHugs · 25/12/2018 09:43

Put it in cold water and it will defrost quicker

statetrooperstacey · 25/12/2018 09:45

No, not if it doesn't say cook from frozen! Finish defrosting in the microwave or put it in a sink of COLD water and weigh it down so it's all submerged. Shouldn't take too long.

ncasouting · 25/12/2018 09:45

Put it in cold water in the sink and change the water regular, or leave the tap, running

It’s only quarter to ten. What time are you, eating at

gamerchick · 25/12/2018 09:46

Yes just submerge it in cold water. It'll defrost fast.

MrsJayy · 25/12/2018 09:48

Somebody told me years ago a basin of salted cold water to defrost . Why would you cook an half frozen chicken?

marvellousnightforamooncup · 25/12/2018 10:09

Mine's the same even though I took it out of the freezer two days ago. Thanks for the tips people!

110818baby · 25/12/2018 10:16

assuming it was frozen solid before you put it in the water, it would take 2-3 hours. However, you can easily check it, if there are no ice crystals in the body cavity it's good to go. Have the oven ready and chuck it straight in.
Check it's cooked through by piecing with a skewer or sharp knife though the thickest bit (usually the thigh). If the juices run clear its done. Take out of the oven, put it on a plate and cover with tin foil, and then a tea-towel. It' will keep warm and continue to cook a bit and will be fine after 15 - 20 mins.

110818baby · 25/12/2018 11:24

I left it in the fridge over night, it was still frozen on the body when I looked this morning before making this thread.
And I've just realised it's nowhere near big enough to feed everyone. Brilliant Xmas Sad

110818baby · 25/12/2018 11:35

Do you have a defrost setting on the microwave?

Singlenotsingle · 25/12/2018 11:38
Shock
Squatternutbosh123 · 25/12/2018 11:38

I've cooked chicken and Turkey from part frozen in the past with no ill effects, as long as it's cooked through and piping hot it'll be fine

Yearofthemum · 25/12/2018 11:39

You can spatchcock it and microwave to mostly defrost, then cook it. Cook at a slightly lower temperature eg 4 not 5, and check it's done. Spatchcock chicken usually cooks more quickly.

dementedpixie · 25/12/2018 11:40

Things never defrost overnight in the fridge. I leave out on the worktop and then put in the fridge once defrosted

dementedpixie · 25/12/2018 11:40

And big turkeys can take several days to defrost in the fridge

Ifailed · 25/12/2018 11:45

OP, if you've suddenly had to cook for 4 more than you expected, I don't see why you and your kids have to eat chicken burgers! A 3 lb (roughly) chicken is not a lot, but would feed 4 ok so long as there's plenty of veg etc. Share the load, all 7 of you should be able to have a bit of the meal you've cooked, and if anyone complains tell them where to get off!

dementedpixie · 25/12/2018 11:49

Tell your unexpected guests to bring some food too

Singlenotsingle · 26/12/2018 00:42

It's saying in online news that there have been lots of problems with the big supermarkets selling rancid chickens. I hope no one ate yours OP.

BooseysMom · 26/12/2018 08:31

110818baby..how did yesterday go? Our turkey didn't defrost either as we followed the instructions on there and it said leave 20-25 hrs in the fridge but it was half solid the next day. I poured boiling water over it in the sink and left another 2 hrs and it defrosted in time. I over-cooked it though. It said 160 fan which seemed too low so whacked it up to 180 for 2 hrs. I like it looking more brown anyway.
Hope your day went well in the end.
Happy Christmas Xmas Smile

Ifailed · 26/12/2018 10:10

BooseysMom I hope everyone is ok!

The reason we are told to defrost frozen poultry in the fridge is to keep all the meat below 5 degrees, above this and bacteria start to multiply.

You can also do it in cold water, which you should refresh every 20 mins or so to keep the temp below 5 degrees. If you just leave it out at room temperature, the outside will warm up and bacteria will start to reproduce on the skin and outer flesh, whilst the inside is still frozen.

dementedpixie · 26/12/2018 10:18

Nhs gives defrosting times for room temperature as well as in the fridge. If using water, use cold water not boiling.
