Which bits of Christmas dinner can you prep today?

I'm doing the red cabbage (with apple etc)- but I can't think of anything else to save time!

My mum used to do the veg and leave them in water overnight.

Turkey crown with all the usual stuff.

You?

I think I've made a boo boo. I cooked the turkey today. I've never cooked turkey before (don't actually like it-it was requested by a guest) will it be ok to warm up the whole thing tomorrow? How long do you reckon it will take (think it's 2kg)?

UserMe18 · 24/12/2018 18:27

@ShadowWeaver how do you accidentally cook a turkey?! We don't reheat poultry but would have gravy over the top of it, cold turkey wouldn't bother me personally.

bellinisurge · 24/12/2018 18:33

My MIL used to roast it the night before, transport it to a holiday cottage they rented each Christmas and reheat it in the day.
I've done it myself once but I wasn't keen. Like the smell in the house.
Nobody had negative consequences.

As I'm 38+6 today, DH has done pretty much everything today, including:

  • dressing the turkey
  • roasting the veg (potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips, carrots) so they can be crisped up with 20 mins in the oven tomorrow
  • sprouts peeled and in a bowl of cold water
  • stuffing and bread sauce were made last week and frozen, so they're out of the freezer
  • gravy made from giblets/veg peelings
We pre bought red cabbage and pigs in blankets and mum is bringing the Christmas pudding tomorrow. Turkey will go in before church and the rest will go in when we get back, ready to eat at 1.
overitalready · 24/12/2018 19:00

*ivy Yes of course they will go brown when roasting.
The point is to stop them browning in the water overnight

ShadowWeaver · 24/12/2018 19:00

I didn't accidentally cook it. I thought it would just make it easier for me tomorrow as my oven only has 2 shelves, but then saw no one else had cooked one so thought it was a no no.

Littleraindrop15 · 24/12/2018 19:08

Am trying to brave strength from you all to get my ass downstairs and start preparing but I'm pregnant and exhausted. Will start in one hour

DeadBod · 24/12/2018 19:13

I've just par boiled my potatoes and tossed them in flour. Do I just let them cool and cover with foil, all ready to roast tomorrow?
Dd thinks that it's the wrong time to be experimental.
I want to be as organised as possible as I'll be working a full shift tomorrow night.

ivykaty44 · 24/12/2018 20:53

Overitalready - why? Why does it matter if the potatoes turn brown before roasting?

peridito · 24/12/2018 21:19

@ShadowWeaver I would carve the turkey and pour hot gravy over and serve .
I wouldn't reheat the bird as a whole piece IYSWIM .It will be fine .
Lots of people cook it the day before .

overitalready · 24/12/2018 21:39

Because i dont want brown mash so the ones for roasting can do as they please but brown mash? Nah 🤷🏼‍♀️

ivykaty44 · 24/12/2018 21:51

Mash...? With a roast dinner ehh?

Soontobe60 · 24/12/2018 23:01

Shadowweaver, don't reheat the whole turkey. Slice up some of it into thickish slices, arrange on an oven proof plate, dot with butter, cover with foil and reheat in the oven then pour over hot gravy.

ShadowWeaver · 24/12/2018 23:47

We always have mash with a roast.

Thanks for the advice re heating turkey.

JustBeingJobless · 24/12/2018 23:48

I’ve got stuffing, pigs in blankets and parsnips ready to go. Potatoes have been parboiled and part toasted, just need another 15-20 minutes in the oven to brown tomorrow. Mash is made and just needs reheating (I know, I know... but I haven’t physically got room in my oven for just roasties for 9 people!), veg is all prepped and ready to go in the steamer.

JustBeingJobless · 24/12/2018 23:48

*Roasted not toasted!!

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 24/12/2018 23:51

I soaked my turkey in brine and spices for a couple of days and cooked it today ready for tomorrow.

I’ve made my veg and giblet stock for the gravy, just need to thicken it with flour.

I’ve peeled and chopped the potatoes ready for roasties.

I’ve prepared the sausage, apple and parsnip stuffing. Just needs baking.

The only thing I need to do tomorrow is the beef wellington and roasted veg.

Quite relaxed about it all really!
