Which bits of Christmas dinner can you prep today?

Miljah · 24/12/2018 11:55

I'm doing the red cabbage (with apple etc)- but I can't think of anything else to save time!

My mum used to do the veg and leave them in water overnight.

Turkey crown with all the usual stuff.

You?

I'm making the stuffing, mashed potatoes and cauliflower cheese today and yes I know lots of people on MN don't like those things with they're Christmas dinner but we do.

Tomorrow that will leave me with the Turkey crown, roast potatoes, red cabbage, the honey glazed gammon, glazed carrots, roast parsnips, brussel sprouts, gravy, pigs in blankets(I've cheated a bit this year and got them ready made)and my DH makes the Yorkshire puddings because his are always lovely.

carrie74 · 24/12/2018 13:43

It's only 6 of us tomorrow, so I'm not planning on doing much. Might do the red cabbage and have some with dinner tonight (gammon), and if I decide to make cauliflower cheese, I'll do that tonight. In the past I've (asked guests) to peel the potatoes and root veggies and keep in water overnight, I'll see how I'm feeling tonight after the pub...

VictoriaBun · 24/12/2018 13:44

With regard to vegetables. You can prep sprouts, carrots, cabbage and put in bags in the fridge. Putting them in water in a saucepan will leach the vitamins out of them .

Potatoes and parsnips preppes
Apple sauce and cranberry suace cooked
That's it.

Stephisaur · 24/12/2018 15:26

My mum always cooked the meat today (in case of a Christmas Day powercut).

I’ll be parboiling my spuds today (gives time for them to steam cool) and then covering in foil for tomorrow.

Veg are of the microwave variety, pigs in blankets are store bought so will only need bunging in the oven.

ivykaty44 · 24/12/2018 15:30

The potatoes will go brown as you roast them - don’t get the dash of milk..?

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 24/12/2018 15:38

I'm doing lamb joint in slow cooker overnight

SilverySurfer · 24/12/2018 15:40

I've jointed the chicken (can't eat a whole one as its just me for Christmas lunch tomorrow) rubbed the sage to go in the stuffing, made the stuffing, made the pigs in blankets, sprouts and carrots prepped and in fridge, profiteroles made and filled with Amaretto cream and raspberries, tops dipped in caramel and most importantly, the champagne is in the fridge. Grin

Happy Christmas everyone, I hope you all have a lovely day.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 24/12/2018 15:41

Made giblet stock, red cabbage and mince pies. Prepared sossy rolls to go in oven tomorrow. About to tackle the stuffing and bread sauce, also veg prep. Did cranberry sauce last week. Turkey is brining outside with a heavy weight on it to deter our curious cat.

Sexnotgender · 24/12/2018 15:44

36 weeks pregnant so trying to spread the work load as I get sore I feel I stand too long.

Potatoes are peeled and in water for roast potatoes
Pigs are snugly tucked in their blankets
Sprouts are peeled and cut in half
Cauliflower cut into florets and currently in the freezing cold dining room as my fridge is heaving
Parma ham chopped and Parmesan grated for the roasted cauliflower Alfredo
Turkey is defrosting
Dessert is defrosting- I cheated and bought dessert and stuffing as too pregnant to be bothered making from scratch this year.

DoveSecret · 24/12/2018 15:49

DH has taken the kids out to play football. Im flat on the sofa feeling unwell. Cold, shivery, headache, hurting all over. Nothing done. He has a lot to do when he gets back.

Nurofen and paracetamol do fuck all.

BreconBeBuggered · 24/12/2018 15:52

I've made a nut roast and vegetarian gravy, parboiled potatoes and parsnips, done the swede and carrot mash ready for re-heating and prepared the sprouts. Oh, and made a load of vegetable antipasti as most of the vegan and vegetarian snacky things had been stripped from the shelves by greedy thoughtless bastards in my local supermarket.
Should make things easier for tomorrow but now I can't be arsed to even think about what to have tonight. I just want someone else to hand me a plate of food.

DinosApple · 24/12/2018 15:52

Ham, pigs and blankets and cranberry sauce I did yesterday.

Today I'm doing apple sauce, peeling carrots, peeling and boiling spuds and parsnips and making mashed parsnips.

Tomorrow put turkey in, cook veg, roast spuds. I'll be on my tod in the morning so more prep means less stress.

Athena51 · 24/12/2018 16:33

I've done honey and clementine roasted carrots and sauteed sprouts with pancetta ready to be taken over to my DSis and reheated for lunch.

Dogsmellssobadbob · 24/12/2018 16:37

I’ve par boiled my potatoes, shaken to be fluffy, cooled and tossed in flour and S/P and frozen on a tray ready to be piped into hot fat tomorrow

Brussels parboiled and stuck into iced water then left to dry and out in fridge. Will fry with pancetta and chestnuts tomorrow

Stuffing/sauces all done and in fridge.
Gravy base done and will just add meaty bits after turkey roasted

Broccoli and carrots prepped and in water ready to steam with peas

Parsnip dauphinoise baked and will reheat

Trifle and choc log made. Xmas pud just gets microwaved.

Honestly the actual Xmas day cooking is minimal.

Toomanycats99 · 24/12/2018 16:40

My dd would wake at 5 -I just got it done and out the way then!

WonderWoman2019 · 24/12/2018 16:48

Goose for us tomorrow. Have already done bread sauce (my sole culinary contribution to the day Xmas Grin) and red cabbage plus prunes in Armagnac prepared. Will take DS to church tomorrow and leave DH to pick up the rest tee hee hee.

TonTonMacoute · 24/12/2018 16:50

I've done pretty much everything. Red cabbage was done ages ago, just need to get it out of the freezer. Stock done, stuffings done.

Just par boiled the spuds. Like Dogsmells, if you do this you don't have to have them in water all night, they really dry out and are much fluffier and crispier IME.

soloula · 24/12/2018 17:05

I've parboiled and roughed up my spuds with a bit of flour and frozen. I'll cook from frozen tomorrow (makes them extra crispy)

Have peeled and cut carrots, bagged them and out them in the fridge.

Made cheesecake

Made cranberry sauce

Made rum butter

Made broccoli in cheese sauce, all ready to be roasted tomorrow.

Turkey is all in foil and prepped to go straight in the oven tomorrow.

Just working on my cooking schedule, so I know what's to go in/out the oven when.

UserMe18 · 24/12/2018 17:17

I was going to say "why to people prep today it's just a roast dinner chill out" but as I read replies realised I've pre bought most of my sides (like red cabbage) so I guess I just cheat haha!!

I've defrosted the turkey!

Jjacobb · 24/12/2018 17:33

I've peeled the veg and parboiled the potatoes.
Made stuffing and onion sauce.
Ham is in the slow cooker and turkey is prepared ready to go in the oven.
Dh is just knocking up one of his amazing baked cheesecake.

Jjacobb · 24/12/2018 17:41

Oh and made champagne jellies

Juanbablo · 24/12/2018 18:02

I've done the broccoli cheese and dh has made the stuffing. Later on once the DC's are in bed I will peel and chop potatoes and carrots and leave them in saucepans of water. And I will do the sprouts.

bellinisurge · 24/12/2018 18:05

The pigs in blankets have been roasted. I repeat. The pigs in blankets have been roasted.
Obviously some needed testing before I put them in the fridge ready for reheating in the oven tomorrow. And then I needed to double check ....

peridito · 24/12/2018 18:08

With pre prepared mash ,adding cream cheese makes it still taste yummy when reheated .
It doesn't taste cheesy ,just smmoth and tasty .
