I think the yanks have got it right. Tidbit sounds much cuter than titbit.

3out · 28/12/2018 09:03

I think the first recording was tidbit in England, in 1730 (or something like that) and then titbit was recorded in 1745. I can’t remember the exact figures.

It’s perhaps like our use of ‘s’ when American English would use a ‘z’. We tend to think of it as wrong, but actually the original English would have used the Z too, and for some reason we shifted to using an S.

Cokey

BertieBotts · 28/12/2018 09:24

Tidbit sounds weird. Titbit is correct. Apparently they literally did change that because it sounded rude, but it refers to the amount a small bird would eat IIRC - nothing to do with boobs.

FestiveNut · 28/12/2018 09:29

I disagree. According to what I've read, no one can say for sure which came first.

TheRhythmessCarolMan · 28/12/2018 09:59

Oooh. Eeee.
Oooo aaaarr aaarr!

The Snowmen version was played on the radio (pick of the pops, radio 2 today).
That’s the tune I would sing it to & I think they’re singing ooh, Hokey Cokey cokey.
I can’t work out how oooh the Hokey Cokey fits at all. Is there another tune?

OTOH, I did a lyric search, and that says “ I like cokey “ x 3.
Go figure.

It's Hokey Pokey in Australia.

The ice cream is also Hokey Pokey.

TheRhythmlessCarolMan · 29/12/2018 21:32

So it's a song about ice cream. Cool!
