Being paid early for Christmas?

I'm not sure if I've missed a thread about this, but want to hear opinions.

I get actually find it annoying that my company (and prior) pay me early for Christmas. While I'm an adult who budgets it still fucks with my dates, and annoyes me frankly.

I'd prefer they just paid it on the normal date. I've either budgeted for Christmas or I haven't.

Do you find it useful to be paid earlier?

It makes January veeeeery long. DH used to pay his staff early but a couple of years ago decided to stick to normal pay day which is 23rd anyway - which this year falls on a weekend so they will be paid on 21st!

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 19/12/2018 17:38

I don't get paid early as my pay date is not near Xmas but dh normally gets paid on the 25th of each month, ar Xmas it goes in a few days early, it's not a major problem but it's only a couple of days.
Could you transfer it to another account to remove temptation?

sazzle27 · 19/12/2018 17:38

Nope. I hate it.

Due to be paid tomorrow (normally 25th of every month)..

As you do OP, I budget. I have spreadsheets and track spending and savings and expected spends throughout the year..

Despite this, December still messes with me and I'm looking forward to it all being sorted and back to normal in February.. despite the extra weeks between tomorrow and the January payday...

For me now, it's not so much of a problem, but I still would rather not have this. And I guess if you budget well it shouldn't be.

But I just had 3 people tell me they wished we'd not done that...

Grumpbum123 · 19/12/2018 17:43

I always move it straight into another account and move back on normal payday

TheEmmaDilemma · 19/12/2018 17:47

My bill money already goes to another account and will. I can deal with it all.

I just think for some people it almost puts tempation to spend that bit extra they can't afford. Last minute treats and then Jan hits. I've been there.

Ok, we are all adults, but do we really need to paid early?

It's to allow enough time to resend the payments if the payment system fails for any reason. Salaries are usually paid on a 3 day cycle and if it's due on the 24th, (so instructed 3 days before) and goes wrong there would be no time to rectify smoothly particularly when you have all the bank holidays after 24th.

Being paid a few days early is preferable to not being paid at all until after all the bank holidays are over!

Magmatic80 · 19/12/2018 17:53

I hate it too. Normally get paid last working day. I’m sure finance hate the extra faff when they’re trying to do year end too.

BifsWif · 19/12/2018 17:55

My current employer doesn’t pay early, all my others have and I much prefer it this way.

Milliepatch · 19/12/2018 17:57

I hate it too. Get paid a week early; I suppose some people rely on that for Christmas but that would make Jan very painful. I transfer all mine into an easy saver then pay myself back on my true pay day. Dont know why as I budget anyway but I don't like the change mentally Grin

TheEmmaDilemma · 19/12/2018 18:00

@Magmatic80 I bet they do, trying to roll up overtime etc. BAH!

@Viebienremplie I get that, and a BAC is still 3 days apparently. But just pay it on the required date for me that would be 28th. No issue.

This affects universal credit claims, as it shows as two payments in one month.

BiddyPop · 19/12/2018 18:02

Paid fortnightly and it used to be that last paycheck was done 1 week early, and weekly paid for a double week just before Christmas (and a no pay week after it).

We moved to a shared services provider for payroll since last Christmas and there is no change to regular payroll - it will be paid on 27th as scheduled (so not the usual 1 week early).

The reason that THAT is bad is that banks are not saying they will be open or honoring transactions until 28th (for Christmas holiday reasons) but credit cards are still due to be paid on or before 27th as normal (I rang and checked last week) so effectively I need to pay that this Friday, 21st, to be sure it will go through. Online payments on morning of 24th apparently should be ok but no guarantees.

In my case, that’s fine.

But it’s bad news for a good few who had only been told yesterday that pay would be in our accounts “on or before 27th” and probably depended on that going on to make their card payments.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 19/12/2018 18:03

I got paid a week early this month! I hate it, it messes up my budgeting.

BiddyPop · 19/12/2018 18:04

Sorry, I meant that many people had expected their 27th pay to arrive on 20th, so being able to pay the card on 21st or 24th rather than it not going through electronically on 27th

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 19/12/2018 18:08

I don't like it. I've been paid today instead of on the 25th. It shouldn't matter but it does make it easier to buy an extra pressie or commit to one too many festive events because it looks like you have more money than you do. And it's longer until you get paid again which is miserable.

jenniuol · 19/12/2018 18:08

I hate this too. We’re getting paid over a week early meaning there’s nearly 6 weeks till January pay day. Like you say, we’re all adults and should budget etc (which I always do) but it’s unnecessary temptation for some. I won’t touch mine till my ‘normal’ pay date.

Namelesswonder · 19/12/2018 18:10

I get paid early in Dec and January then back to normal (last Thursday of the month) in February.

mortifiedmama · 19/12/2018 18:11

I used to hate it, but my current trust pat's December a week earlier then January 4 days earlier so it doesn't seem so long.

I have always however moved the entire pay in to side account and put it back in on the should be pay day.

Buddyelf · 19/12/2018 18:12

I hate it too. I got paid today and it means I now have 6 weeks until my next pay day. I’ve put some of it in a separate bank account so I don’t blow through it all too soon

AJPTaylor · 19/12/2018 18:13

Last job got paid last day of the month. Always something last 21st in December. Tbd, they also paid early in January, around the 25th And the Feb is a short month anyway

JamieFraser · 19/12/2018 18:14

Yep hate it. It's a psychological thing. I get paid this evening and then that's it for 6 weeks. 6 wks😓😓😓

SayNoToCarrots · 19/12/2018 18:21

I don't mind, I just don't look at my balance for a bit, but what kanieloutis said about universal credit hadn't occurred to me - would that mean people would lose a months benefit whilst they had to reapply? Lovely Christmas present that!

Squ1ggle · 19/12/2018 18:22

Yep same here, normally get paid the penultimate working day of each month so wouldn't normally get paid until 30th but we got paid today. Like some already have said I move it straight to a savings account and won't move it back until the end of the month so that i can pretend it's not there

TheHobbitMum · 19/12/2018 18:32

I like being paid early, I know that there aren't any issues then and any mistakes can be rectified before the Christmas shut down.

I will be paid on the 21st instead of the 28th
