Being paid early for Christmas?

I'm not sure if I've missed a thread about this, but want to hear opinions.

I get actually find it annoying that my company (and prior) pay me early for Christmas. While I'm an adult who budgets it still fucks with my dates, and annoyes me frankly.

I'd prefer they just paid it on the normal date. I've either budgeted for Christmas or I haven't.

Do you find it useful to be paid earlier?

I'm a teacher and our payroll has paid us 10 days early. As they do every year.

I just transfer it into a savings account got the 10 days then put it back on actual pay day.

canibehereifimnotamum · 19/12/2018 18:37

We get paid on 25th, it is so annoying over Xmas we're so poor for so long!

silentcrow · 19/12/2018 18:39

School here too, getting paid tomorrow. I don't like it, but since I'm part-time I've been picking up a few bank shifts in another school which uses the council's mid-month payment system each December, so I'll get a top-up in three weeks. It's a pain right before Christmas, but halo-polishingly prudent Grin

I think your in the minority . I've always worked in accounts and staff were always asking to be paid early what day etc so it's been a few days before around 20th instead of 29th . I assume so they can rush out and get last minute presents etc but yes I agree January is a long month to be spent up , but I suppose it's there salary to do as they please . I've always done pretty much everything by 20th so it doesn't bother me I just leave it in my bank for my direct debits that go out beginning of month .

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 19/12/2018 18:41

We're usually last Wednesday of the month. We got paid today and will have January's pay a week earlier too. It's a pain in the arse because it makes the wait between dec-jan 5 weeks and jan-feb 5 weeks. Two 5 week months back to back is a killer.

Thankssomuch · 19/12/2018 18:41

Yes my employer does this. Can’t stand it. Messes me up for the whole of January.

anniehm · 19/12/2018 18:43

We pay early because I'm on annual leave from Friday so if the bank messes up I'm not in to sort it (and they would seriously complain if pay didn't come through to the 2nd January!). I certainly don't trust the bank not to have a technical glitch, been too many over the years

TheEmmaDilemma · 19/12/2018 18:45

Universal credit and credit cards being arseholes is shit.

I do think that it's a psychological thing also though.

Even when you budget.

It's Christmas... look at this early money...

I know it's not extra. I know it's not there. But somehowe it still plays on my mind!

Its interesting reading the comments here - we always pay our staff on the last working day in December so this year it will be 21st. it stems from when pay used to be in cash but now its all done by bank transfer, it wouldn't be difficult to pay on the normal last Friday of the month if the majority would find it easier..

Might just ask everyone which they would prefer after Christmas is over..

Simonsaysitschristmas · 19/12/2018 18:47

I’ve already been paid for December. There were 1.5 weeks between November and December pay and there will be over 7 weeks between December and January pay. I put it into a different account straight away but I can see how easy it is for people to struggle in January!

Villanellesproudmum · 19/12/2018 18:49

I get paid tomorrow, 10 days early however I’ve racked up a high travel expenses claim this month so I see it as getting that back early, rather than having to wait until mid month so I’m happy.

DowntonCrabby · 19/12/2018 18:50

We’re in a tiny company and are being paid tomorrow 20th and then on 20th January aswell which is fantastic.

Redglitter · 19/12/2018 18:53

Doesn't bother me. I just pretend its not there til the 28th

BubblesBubblesBubbles · 19/12/2018 18:54

I will get paid normally so the last working day (or last working day but one) I can never remember which one it is!! So I think mine will be the 28/29th December.

Dh will be paid on Friday (21st) and will get his bonus and an extra weeks wage. His company shut for the 2 weeks so I’m guessing it’s all done this week as no body will be in work and just in case the bank had a glitch.

January always seems to bugger up my budget Confused I know it’s a long month and 5 weeks but I still somehow end up in a pickle. Every other 5 week month is fine just bloody January.

TheEmmaDilemma · 19/12/2018 19:03

@user10001999 According to this thread, I'm not actually...

TheEmmaDilemma · 19/12/2018 19:08

@AnchorDownDeepBreath

I don't like it. I've been paid today instead of on the 25th. It shouldn't matter but it does make it easier to buy an extra pressie or commit to one too many festive events because it looks like you have more money than you do. And it's longer until you get paid again which is miserable

It can catch the best of us out like that!

@TheEmmaDilemma
I'm not having a go I'm saying based on my experience in all the years I've worked in accounts I've never heard 1 person complain about being paid early always the opposite.

Toomanybaubles · 19/12/2018 20:02

I have paid everyone on the 21st instead of the 24th just in case there is a banking error or problem because I will have gone home for Christmas.

SushiMonster · 19/12/2018 20:09

Same. It’s not helpful and mildly annoying.

ChikiTIKI · 19/12/2018 20:21

It's usually done so the staff (or company if payroll function is outsourced) can get payroll done before they are off for Christmas. As well as a regular payroll run each month, you usually need time for a supplementary payroll run too for any mistakes to be corrected.

I don't like being paid early either, but if I was paid incorrectly I wouldn't want to wait until the new year to get it fixed. That said, I got underpaid by 2 days in September and it still hasn't been corrected.

Lifeofsmiley · 19/12/2018 20:27

I’m getting paid early but usually don’t touch it until pay day.

Kintan · 19/12/2018 20:31

I think it’s great. Usually by that point (21st for us this year) I’ve already bought presents/paid for food etc, so it’s nice to be able to end the month/year not feeling totally skint! I’ve never been tempted to blow it all on extra stuff though, I’m fully aware it’s just January’s pay a bit early!

AlexanderHamilton · 19/12/2018 20:35

This affects universal credit claims, as it shows as two payments in one month.

It shouldn’t do if done properly. I work in payroll and HMRC sent an email telling all employers that if they are paying early for Christmas to date the Full Payment Submission the normal pay date as doing otherwise might affect Universal Credit.

We pay early because we close for Christmas tomorrow.

AlexanderHamilton · 19/12/2018 20:38

I think if we didn’t pay early we’d have a rebellion.
