Does anyone else feel meh about cheese and not get the fuss over it?

I eat cheese but only certain types and I prefer to cook with it or melt it on toast than eat it in chunks. It's nice but I've never understood the adoration. I've never had a cheeseboard in my life. The thought of eating chunks of something so savoury after a meal, especially the strong smelling type doesn't appeal.

This isn't a criticism of anyone who loves the stuff but I'm just curious to know if others are indifferent to cheese or like it but don't rave about it? It can't just be a love it or hate it thing surely?

I feel the same about cheese. It's ok part of something but not as the star of the show.

However when I was pregnant I was obsessed with cheese and ate it by the block. DD1 I thought it bizarre. DD2 it made me aware I was pregnant before any normal symptoms because I wanted to eat cheese! Apparently I'm only a cheese lover when growing babies Grin

Cheese was the main reason I stopped being vegan. Shropshire Blue and red wine dribbles

However I don't like chocolate which makes me even weirder...

daftlump · 18/12/2018 20:34

I don't really get the cheese love. Parmesan on pasta, cheddar on a baked potato but a board of the stuff when you've eaten a big pudding? No thanks.

And those over ripe stinkers that ooze like pus filled boil? Yuck.

God we love cheese in this house.

Far more attention has been paid to the Christmas cheese ordering than any of the groceries or wine or presents or champagne...

Cheese is food of the gods Grin
Baked camembert stuffed with garlic.
Delicious blue cheese with grapes
I love a cheese fondue with potatoes, grapes, bread to dip in!

I almost cried with happiness when Tesco had sage derby so I didn't have to spend a fortune ordering online.

StuffingandSausages · 18/12/2018 20:58

I knew that this thread would attract the cheese worshippers in their hordes but at least I'm not entirely alone. Grin

My local Tesco was crammed with dozens upon dozens of reduced cheese boards today. You guys would have been in heaven.

I'm glad it exists as I can't imagine eating a burger without cheese, though that's more of a texture than a taste thing, and I cooked with feta today, but overall for me it's nice but not all that.

Do the really strong smelling cheese taste less offensive than they smell? I cant imagine wanting to get that close to something that has such an unpleasant odour. Perhaps I'm just a wuss. I'll be honest, I don't even understand the appeal of brie or camembert. The texture is nice but why would I want to eat something that tastes of ammonia?

That's madness OP! Rancid stinking and oozing washed rind cheese is the best thing ever. I brought 2 Milleens back from Dublin in my hand luggage, such is my dedication.

halfwitpicker · 18/12/2018 21:06

Me too. It's OK but I don't get the obsession. DH is French and it's as if there's only one food in the world that counts : fromage.

Narya · 18/12/2018 21:07

With the exception of mozzarella on pizza I can't stand the stuff

SpamChaudFroid · 18/12/2018 21:08

StuffingandSausages - no, strangely rancid cheese doesn't taste of ammonia, for some reason it often tastes nothing like it smells.

Ohhgreat · 18/12/2018 21:08

Yep I agree, I just don't get it! Halloumi on the BBQ, grated cheddar on pasta or a jacket potato, that's pretty much it for.me!
Wish I could swap with DB at the mo as he's just gone dairy free (looking v like he's intolerant) and he's really missing cheese!

Nesssie · 18/12/2018 21:09

I hate cheese. Can’t stand the stuff. The soft melty types are the worse.

Shockers · 18/12/2018 21:10

I’d choose cheese over a pudding any day!

StuffingandSausages · 18/12/2018 21:15

Brie tastes of ammonia to me. Interesting to hear that other stronger cheeses don't taste as strong as they smell.

I went into a cheeseshop once to buy a loaf and the smell was completely overpowering. I had to run back out after ten seconds before I lost my lunch. I knew that it'd be strong of course be strong of course but not that intolerable. I don't think that I've ever recovered from the trauma.

But but but...Camembert with crusty bread Sad

Nottobesoldseparately · 18/12/2018 22:15

I was late in tonight. Soooooo

Cheese and biscuits for tea. My favourite pub lunch is a ploughmans, many a place has been dismissed for the lack of one on the menu.

DH however is not really a cheese fan, he'll have it on a burger, pizza etc. But he would never share a cheese board for example.
He has other redeeming qualities thankfully or i wouldn't have married him!

Janecon · 18/12/2018 22:21

Cheese on toast is the food of the gods. There isn't much that can't be improved with the addition of melted cheese. Nectar.....

LettuceP · 18/12/2018 22:26

I'm one of those weirdos that doesn't like cheese. Honestly the looks people give me when I tell them 😂

DrMadelineMaxwell · 18/12/2018 23:52

I really don't get the cheese -love. I find anything stronger than the mildest cheddar unpleasant and it smells and tastes like socks/vomit. Urgh.

I can cope wuth the castello cheese that has the pineapple and hazelnuts in it, in a thin layer on a cracker, but rarely eat that.

I don't mind things like pizza or lasagne, but too thick a layer and it just makes me feel nauseous and I find it greasy.

PodgeBod · 19/12/2018 00:01

I'm with you OP, I appreciate a bit of cheese in a meal but a cheese board leaves me cold. After much gushing about Camembert on here, I bought one for myself and then hated the aftertaste in my mouth.

brightstarryeyes · 19/12/2018 00:05

I regularly binge on cheese. Cheese is the best. 🧀
Sorry I do t understand anyone who doesn’t like it. Although I do envy them when I’m in the middle of a cheese binge...

Newsername · 19/12/2018 00:12

I get cheese cravings. My mouth is actually watering thinking of it. I absolutely adore cheese. Cheese on its own, cheese in a baguette, cheese on toast, cheese on a cracker...omg!

Why do some people it love it so? I think it’s superior genetics at work.
