My son keeps getting theses bites. at first we thought bed bugs but can't find any gave checked all the mattress and sheets but no sign at all. Chemist suggested bed bugs to. No one else has got any bites. He's just had more come up in the last 30 mins and he's not been in his bed room.

Where are the bites and what do they look like?

dementedpixie · 18/12/2018 16:26

Do you have pets?

jessstan2 · 18/12/2018 16:30

There are still plenty of biting insects about despite the weather getting colder. I am aways being bitten and some bites swell up. Some people are more susceptible to being bitten by insects than others.

You would know if you had bed bugs, they go up walls and wait on the ceiling, poised to plummet and attack!

Just clean them and put on antiseptic cream. Get him to use some insect repellant a couple of times of day, not too liberally but on the bits that get bitten. Arms, legs, feet and ankles are favourite. They fly up trouser legs.

No perfumed soap or shower gel, insects love that.

A cold winter will kill 'em off.

Just give the mattress a hoover anyway and a once over with a bug spray and wash the sheets on 90 degrees.
I got loads of bites once - DH didn't - but once I did the above they stopped. Anything's worth a go!
Also, check the seams of his clothing.

Mollymillie · 18/12/2018 17:51

We only moved into the house a couple days ago. It has new carpets. And the bedroom where i thought he was getting bitten I hoovered all the mattress and steamed it. I also pulled back the carpet hoovered and steamed all round the skirting and some of the floor boards

Did the previous owners have pets? It could be fleas from them that are hatching. Maybe spray indorex to kill anything

glamorousgrandmother · 18/12/2018 17:55

Did the previous owner have cats? I moved into a house with resident cat fleas once I ended up dragging the carpet out into the garden and living with bare boards for a while.

PoisonousSmurf · 18/12/2018 17:55

Could be fleas.

shecamefromgreece · 18/12/2018 18:09

Fleas.
Fresh blood has moved in. Some people much more appealing to them.
Our cat had them we got a man through council to come and spray.

Mollymillie · 18/12/2018 18:13

I don't know if they had pets. But I have not seen fleas either. With all the bites he has I would have thought we would have seen then by now. Won't rule it out though.

Bed bugs are in rows of 2 or 3 like that.
You may need to google treatment of these other than just hoovering - headboards can be a hiding place too.
Take the entire bed apart and treat the whole room.

ShowOfHands · 18/12/2018 18:14

Moving into a house wakes up dormant fleas. The vibrations and noise disturbs them. We had the same problem, identical bites and they bit only dd. I look with suspicion at brand new carpets in houses for sale, often hiding a known problem. The council had to come and spray in the end.

ShowOfHands · 18/12/2018 18:15

We didn't see any fleas for a while. DD had many bites before I saw a live flea.

Wingingthis · 18/12/2018 18:19

Indorex is amazing, you can get it on amazon!

Mollymillie · 18/12/2018 18:25

Ok i think I might get a flea treatment done and see what happens. Hopefully that will fix it .

But I will also still keep hoovering the mattress and checking fit bed bugs. Just incase.

If he's the only one with them, could they be hives?

Mollymillie · 18/12/2018 19:02

I'm not sure about hives. It seems odd he got them as soon as we moved in.

They do look a bit like bed bug bites. I have first hand experience. Are they incredibly itchy?

We had to take the bed apart to find them. They come out to feed at night but the bites can take a few hours to come up. Bed bugs leave faeces that look blue biro marks on walls and sheets. I was the only one to show bites - most of the population aren't affected.

Rentokil do a spray you can use and your local council might offer a subsidised treatment.

Flea bites - which what we thought we had - apparently tend to happen on the lower leg/foot. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that is fleas as they are much easier to treat. Indorex is good.

BoswelliaGoldMyrrh · 18/12/2018 19:30

The pattern is consistent with bedbugs "breakfast, lunch & dinner", but difficult to tell from the actual bites. The bugs themselves are super stealthy, you're very unlikely to spot them until the infestation becomes advanced. They hide deeply in crannies and crevices except to come out and feed in the middle of the night.

Put white/pale unpatterned bedding on the bed and look out for brown/black inky dots on the bedding and mattress. Get some passive monitors that will show up if you have them. Launder bedding at 60C+ & tumble dry. Hoover thoroughly (dispose in outside bin immediately). Be careful about spreading infestation around the house, eg laundry bag, hoover, moving rooms. Get the professionals in if possible, they can often be treated by dry steaming and desiccant powders (non chemical).

Jayfee · 18/12/2018 19:33

Looks like bed bug bites.

Ballbags · 18/12/2018 19:35

Definitely looks like bed bugs

ChodeofChodeHall · 18/12/2018 19:39

It does look like bed bugs and please bear in mind that they could also be living elsewhere, not just in the actual bed.

EllJ · 18/12/2018 19:52

I'm seconding the hives comment. Is he maybe a little stressed from the upheaval of the move?

Mollymillie · 18/12/2018 20:02

@notonthestairs and @BoswelliaGoldMyrrh

At the moment he is sleeping on the mattress on the floor. I have looked under the seams of the mattress in all of the sheets/bedding. The mattress is ceam/white and the bedding it white I have not seen a single spec of blood. And no actual bed bugs at all. But thinking it still could be bed bugs I have hoovered all the mattress and steamed it. I done the same with the carpet/skirting and and cracks I could see and also pulled the carpet up and done under there to . I also pulled of any loose wall paper. I think I'm going to have to get Someone in as I think I have done all I can.

Do the bedsheets have red spots? That's a way to tell.
