I'm dreaming of a 1970s Xmas

A single hazelnut in the bottom of my stocking, chocolate coins,
lovely paisley/flowery ankle length dress to wear on the day,
putting up the tree with glass (!) decorations.

No Whamageddon!

How did you have xmas in the 1970s?

There was a Two Ronnies Christmas Special on Gold the other day, Piggy Malone and Charlie Farley.

One year, necklaces made out of crochet glittery yarn around a coin or ball bearing were popular. Mine was silvery yarn and could have taken your eye out if I turned suddenly Grin

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 19/12/2018 08:41

There are all theTwo Ronnie's, Morecambe and Wise, Risi g Damp, Good Life, Are you being served, Some nothers do 'ave em, Likely Lads etc Christmas specials on YouTube. Also lots of variety shows.
In retrospect probably all a bit crap. But make me feel safe and seven again. Which is no bad thing.

Davros · 19/12/2018 08:49

I was 10 in 1970 so the 70s is/are my favourite decade. A big bottle of Badedas was a luxury treat for my mum. I remember getting Mousetrap and what a pain it was to assemble, Etch-a-Sketch of course, one of my sister's got Newton's Cradle one year. We were sophisticated Londoners and got stripy tights and sparkly bra and pants sets from Biba.

Oh lumme, being allowed a Snowball was the highlight of my Christmases. And a new Sindy or Pippa doll with an awesome maxi-dress. Still have my Sindy & her travel set. My mum would make me fabulous Holly Hobby style dresses to wear too!

I have a recipe these days for a lovely grown-up version of Snowball & can’t wait to have one Christmas Eve Grin

Orchardgreen · 19/12/2018 09:14

I’ve been trying to buy cheese footballs for the last few weeks. I really need them.

LizzieSiddal · 19/12/2018 09:18

Did anyone remember Kanakas?(Sp?)

They were two wooden balls on the end of string. They were so dangerous 😂

SymphonyofShadows · 19/12/2018 09:32

I remember those! Nationwide did a big story about how dangerous they were.

Todamhottoday · 19/12/2018 09:50

Lizzie, clakers!

I always had bruised hands and sore wrists, god they were lethal. But I remember them as hard plastic, then they were brought out with a kind of plastic bit in the middle which was not as good

SheSnapsThenSheFarts · 19/12/2018 10:27

I'd love a 70s Christmas again!! I remember getting soap in the shape of Kermit the frog and being so happy with it, in fact all gifts from neighbours / relatives were much smaller in comparison to today but felt much more special?

ScouseQueen · 19/12/2018 10:43

Shockers I love Wombling Merry Christmas!

Remember the boxes of dates that were kind of lozenge shaped with a camel on? And the candied orange and lemon slices arranged in a circle? We had After Eights and they always seemed like an expensive chocolate you wouldn't buy at just any time of year. Now I see them in the pound shops.

ShiningSally · 19/12/2018 10:43

I'm definitely getting a bottle of advocaat to make snowballs!

Hushnownobodycares · 19/12/2018 11:09

Anyone else remember indoor fireworks?

Auntie always got them in for the big shindig at her place on Boxing day. Lights off, matches out and off they sometimes went Grin

caperplips · 19/12/2018 11:32

I posted on page 1 saying I was born in 1970 and could barely remember 70's christmasses BUT i have read the entire thread and it has brought back SO many memories I had forgotten!

All the avon stuff, the black cat holding the perfume bottle, lantern / carriage christmas lights, the festooning with crinkled paper from each corner of the room, the pippa dolls! the shaker maker, kermit soap (I can smell mine now) using a pair of tights as my stocking and thinking it was a genius idea (as dad's sock before that as his was the biggest sock in the house! I had never seen the 'traditional' fancy stockings we all have now. We sometimes used pillowcases

I am in work and I am feeling weirdly tearful and I have no idea why.....

My gorgeous grandparents are now gone but by parents are still alive yet Christmas doesn't feel like it used to.....Sad

I REALLY hope dd has good memories of the christmasses we have given her

chocatoo · 19/12/2018 11:34

This thread has made me feel v nostalgic. I agree with PPs about how smaller gifts seemed to mean more. I remember when DD was v young we did a little stocking for her bed and she was so so excited - it was enough. I remember feeling uncomfortable at the time because i knew downstairs was a massive pile of presents for her and realising that it’s all got out of hand.

Feckitall · 19/12/2018 11:58

Not RTFT...born 66...Blue Peter coat hanger/tinsel anyone? Grin

Actually was nostalgic about this the other day. It was DGMs birthday...she would have been 104...decorations were put up after her birthday....paper chains...tinsel...tree...

Christmas day...Queens speech..we had to stand for National Anthem...and the big film on the TV..Morcombe and Wise...the Two Ronnies…

now I'm a middleaged fart and life is zooming by Sad

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 19/12/2018 12:58

When Lego only came is little rectangle blocks so everything you made looked square. Wheels had just been introduced to the range and came in black rubber. Colours were either white or bright primary colours like red and yellow.

popcornwizard · 19/12/2018 16:05

I've just bought a box of York Fruits because of this thread - and I don't even like the bloody things.

Shockers · 19/12/2018 17:00

Did anyone else have a talking doll (there was a pullcord in her back to operate her voice)?

I think one of her phrases was ‘my name is Jane.’

She also asked for her purse and said, ‘let’s go shopping.’

brizzledrizzle · 19/12/2018 17:16

Yes, mine was called Sally. She had red shoes and blonde hair I think.
I bought Mastermind for my DCs last xmas.

The Wizard of OZ was on television every year.

fantastic thread , loads of great memories makes me feel very old and really miss every one that was there then but not now

Up the road from me there are a group of house all with their fancy xmas lights festooned over evrything in a really show off sort of way I wonder if the local kids will have the same fond memories of those in years to come

Miggymoggymugwumps · 19/12/2018 20:14

I was so excited to get the original Spirograph and create all those amazing patterns. Sadly I was rubbish at it and all the cogs used to either get stuck or drop away from the main wheel!!

I also absolutely loved Tunis cake which was a big plain round sponge cake but had massively thick chocolate coating with little marzipan fruits on the tip.. You can still find them occasionally but that are a tiny size & the chocolate is nowhere near as thick!

kktpj · 19/12/2018 20:55

My doll who spoke was called Trudy, I always meant to call my daughter that, never did!
My brothers got action men. They used to tie our Sindy dolls to the bed posts😂😂😂

SantaBabycharly · 19/12/2018 20:58

My Talking doll was called Wendy!

MichelleBxx · 19/12/2018 20:58

I remember taking presents round to my cousins with my Mum, there were loads of them as my Dad is the youngest of 8. It was a bit of a military operation. And they often had tinsel trees!
Skalextrix, stretch Armstrong, plasticine, fuzzy felt, playmobil, and I remember some kind of art copying contraption that you could use to trace a picture and make it larger... like you would now enlarge on a photocopier. And massive posters to colour in with felt tips.
We were discussing the Blue Peter coathanger advent town the other weekend when we were in Vienna as there were lots of advent crowns at the markets there, no coat hangers though.

SantaBabycharly · 19/12/2018 20:59

She still lives with my mum !
Xmas Grin
