A single hazelnut in the bottom of my stocking, chocolate coins,
lovely paisley/flowery ankle length dress to wear on the day,
putting up the tree with glass (!) decorations.

No Whamageddon!

How did you have xmas in the 1970s?

All of the above, plus a pair of American Tan tights from my Grandmother. Grin

Waking up at 2am over excited. Sindy doll stuff under the tree, old rellies round for a huge lunch and the Queen at 3pm. Often there was a white Christmas. Happy memories.

I remember my parents hosting a massive party every Boxing Day for years. Long dresses, kipper ties and a smoke filled living room.

Many kids running around the house. So much fun.

Our neighbour had those slippers.
I was SO jealous.
They are fabulous

TSSDNCOP · 25/12/2018 10:24

Harvey’s Bristol Cream, Blue nun, martini and lemonade all round.

Every year in the 70’s my mum produced the Cereminial Christmas Grapefruit.

None of us liked grapefruit. That did not please DM.

TSSDNCOP · 25/12/2018 10:28

I just had a recollection too if bubble bath, generally blue with a quite distinctively un-Molten Brown smell in a bulb shaped plastic bottle with an elaborate pointy stopper.

Does anyone remember the non alcoholic raisin and cherry wine? I can't remember who made it. It was available in our little village shop. We got through several bottles before Christmas was actually here. The raisin one made me wheeze!
Candlewick bedspreads, frost on the inside of the windows, paraffin heaters. Newberry fruits, tins of toffee with pictures on the front, wooden jigsaws, Vanda or Avon soap dishes that were tigers or hippos on their backs. Quilted dressing gowns with pictures of animals on. Brushed nylon nighties that gave off a static charge. Rooms so cold you got a headache. Ken Dodd on the telly. Rolf Harris going around the childrens hospitals handing out presents to the kids in their beds. Makes me shudder now just thinking of him. Home made tree decorations and hoovering up the pine needles still at Easter.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 25/12/2018 16:06

Oh yes, the "posh" bubble bath in a glass bottle. It was probably fairy liquid with food colouring.
I will look up the Back in Time thing. Sounds fab. I can also recommend Where Did It All Go Right- Growing Up Normal in the 70s. Lovely book.

The voice box does not work.

Redpriestandmozart · 25/12/2018 17:33

As a 1960's child, I had a Tiny Tears, a Tumblina, Pippa, Cindy, April Showers along with Etch-a-sketch, Stylohophone, Spirograph, Space Hopper, Frustration and Lego.

Redpriestandmozart · 25/12/2018 17:37

ivykaty44 I remember my aunt had a pink pair of these and she used to chase me and my two cousins with them, we got a good smack across the backside with them!! I was most annoyed that my parents allowed me to be disciplined with my cousins like this :(

buggerthebotox · 25/12/2018 17:42

Ah - so many memories.

Milk Tray.
Cigars.
All the family getting drunk with the neighbours and being in charge of the chicken (never turkey).

Grampa having to spend the day in bed due to being blotto.

Dodgy lights on the tree. Moving into the front room and lighting the fire in there.

Getting painting by numbers and doing it with the help of a large slug of Tia Maria.

Being desperate to get away from the table to watch TOTP.

All the booze and chocs lined up on the sideboard.

Happy days!

BruceFoxton · 01/01/2019 12:39

The day my childhood ended, I now see, was the decision to discontinue Famous Names Babycham liqueur chocolates. Always had a box at Xmas. Can’t find evidence that they actually existed but that was 70s Christmas for me.
