What did you spend your pocket money on as a teenager?

Assuming that as a teenager you had a bit of money to spend on things that weren’t strict necessities, but still didn’t have loads of cash to splash, what kind of things did you buy?

I was born 1980. My pocket money, birthday money, babysitting money went on:

Magazines (especially Just Seventeen).
Body Shop lip balms and fruity soaps.
Guitar strings and plectrums.
Stationery.
Sweets (especially sherbet stuff, kola kubes and the like).
Bus fares to town.
Cinema tickets.
Glitter or pastel nail polish.
The NME.
Cassette singles.
Wimpy burgers and milkshakes.
Body sprays.
Glow in the dark plastic stars for my bedroom ceiling.

Makeup. There was this little independent shop that sold ... I want to say it was called Stargazer eyeshadow? They were generally neon. I had loads of those all worn at once obviously. And clip in hair extensions in bright colours because I was too scared to bleach my own hair.

I also spent money on neon tutus and interesting tights Grin

I was so attractive!

My areas of interest haven’t changed for thirty years Grin

Clothes! I didn’t repeat an outfit my first year of Sixth Form! Used to love buying things like Vogue as I felt so grown up and sophisticated!

Santasshoe · 18/12/2018 06:07

My parents didn't believe in pocket money but with my £5 from my weekly paper round I used to buy cheap nasty nail varnish from te market and McDonald's apple pie.

Vinyl records, there was an absolutely fantastic second hand record shop on my walk home from school. The man who owned it really really knew his stuff, and could direct you to someone who you might never have heard of but would love. He also would only accept /sell records in playable condition, and if you were unsure about an album he would play it for you so you could decide. 1

Turquoisetamborine · 18/12/2018 07:46

We lived in the Middle East in the mid 90s so there was little to buy except perfume, censored magazines and gold. Lots of gold.
I made a fortune babysitting. At 14 I could easily bring in £100 some weeks.
