What are we supposed to do with the bloody gingerbread house?

MrsRhettButler · 17/12/2018 18:28

Is it for decoration?
Will it go off?
Go mouldy?
Dd2 wants to eat it but she will only eat a few bites so we will end up with a gingerbread house minus a bit of roof...

What is the done thing please?

I made one once. Once was enough. It sat around on the sideboard and then the birds had it.

lilmishap · 17/12/2018 18:40

Eat bits from the back and accept the birds or bin will see some of it eventually.

I have a greedy gannet son who demolished ours over a couple of days last year, first time it's ever been totally eaten.

MrsRhettButler · 17/12/2018 18:43

Ah I see, I sort of wanted it for decoration. I guess Dd2 and I had different ideas Xmas Blush

It's our first time.

Keep it for decoration and make gingerbread with her, it'll give you something fun to do over Christmas!

MrsRhettButler · 17/12/2018 20:16

Pinkyyy that was the something fun to do over Christmas! 😂

Send it to me immediately so I can scoff admire it! Grin

JennyHolzersGhost · 17/12/2018 20:25

I never understand the point of this stuff.

CaptainBrickbeard · 17/12/2018 20:26

We build it on Christmas Eve and eat it for dessert that night after it has been sufficiently admired! Any leftover slabs go in a tin and are eaten over the next couple of days. They are lovely but transient!

Leeds2 · 17/12/2018 20:28

I have bought a gingerbread house kit this year, for the first time ever. I had never actually thought about what I would do with it, as in eat or decoration. I can't imagine it will be terribly fresh, as it was delivered from Amazon over three weeks ago!
Hoping DD will make it when she is back from uni later this week.

Pastaagain78 · 17/12/2018 20:30

They eat a bit, rest goes as a Christmas present to the squirrels and birds at the end of the garden.

Thesearmsofmine · 17/12/2018 20:31

We make it and then kids and DH eat it the next day.

confusedofengland · 17/12/2018 21:46

We make it before Christmas then display it until the New Year. On New Year's Day we make a big thing of smashing it up with a rolling pin, everybody gets a turn & it's great fun! Then we eat it, it can be dunked in tea to soften if needed.

Oldraver · 17/12/2018 22:00

We just have it as a deocoration if it's a shop bought one as thye are rank.

DS loves decorating them...a few years ago he smashed one and it took some doing

mathanxiety · 18/12/2018 15:03

Eat all the good bits of candy and icing off, then nibble the rest until you get tired of looking at the wreckage.

MrsTommyBanks · 18/12/2018 15:42

There was a fabulous thread on here one year showing gingerbread houses. Some were amazing, but most were hilariously bad.

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 18/12/2018 15:44

We eat it. Once started it goes to bits and in a tin. Pointless expensive iced biscuit of doom.

OlderThanAverageforMN · 18/12/2018 15:45

It's the making that is the fun. Once done, eat it :-) It also lasts for ever, like Christmas cake, you could well still be eating it at Easter.

PostmanBos · 18/12/2018 15:47

Pointless expensive iced biscuit of doom Xmas GrinXmas GrinXmas Grin

MrsRhettButler · 18/12/2018 19:43

OK, this has actually helped a lot so thank you.

Pointless expensive iced biscuit of doom
😂😂

I'm very glad to hear we can eat it slowly though, it has been substantially nibbled at the rear already.

I'd love to have a look at that thread MrsTommyBanks ours is horrendous but was done by a 7yo so to be expected really Grin

The Ikea one actually tastes nice and is cheap

claraschu · 18/12/2018 19:51

We have made them many times- loads of fun, but way too big for one family. We always give them to one of our kids' schools, where they get devoured. (We are careful not to include any nuts.)

knittedjest · 18/12/2018 20:16

Dh was inspired by disney world and for the last couple of years has commissioned a giant one for our dinning room. It's lasts for about 3 weeks before it starts going soggy and gross but I don't know if the ladies who make them do something for longevity or not.

I also make them with my grandchildren every year but they last about 30 minutes until they pick them apart to pieces and I throw them out before they eat enough to spew orange brown vomit on my floors so don't know how long the little ones last in comparison.

MrsRhettButler · 18/12/2018 20:18

@knittedjest you cannot tell us that without posting pics!!

The kids make it the day before a gang of friends come round. The kids all demolish it then, didn’t take long last year!

mogtheexcellent · 18/12/2018 20:41

Mine is terrible. Never made one before and it's all drunk looking with a cracked roof. Going to finish it off with some dinosaurs attacking it so its looks intentional.

Doubt if it will get eaten. Even I don't want to eat it.

Never making one again. I usually make sticky gingerbread which is very yummy.
