What are we supposed to do with the bloody gingerbread house?

Is it for decoration?
Will it go off?
Go mouldy?
Dd2 wants to eat it but she will only eat a few bites so we will end up with a gingerbread house minus a bit of roof...

What is the done thing please?

They freeze well (in slabs) so you can save some and enjoy the confectionary solution to the housing problem all year round.

The last time we made one, DD spent Christmas eve in tears trying to prop up the sides of a self destructing gingerbread grand design until the icing-glue set. (tip - use melted chocolate as the glue - it sets almost instantly, icing takes about four hours and you will be complately demoralised by the end of it.)

We just immediately eat it once it's decorated but it usually falls apart in less than 5 mins so any other option is off the table

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 19/12/2018 06:49

@3boysandabump surely the option is "on" the table if it just collapses in a heap 😂

Make it up, take a photo for Facebook, then eat straight away.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 19/12/2018 09:05

We used to eat the decorations (smarties, gummy bears, sugar icing etc.) then we ignored it.
DM would then take it apart, crumple it up with butter and turn it into the basic layer of some cake or other.

I haven't actually tried this, but I reckon that once the icing etc. was gone you could crush the leftover gingerbread and use it as a cheesecake base.

JurassicGirl · 20/12/2018 11:01

We make it Christmas Eve & it's allowed to be eaten on Boxing Day Xmas Grin

Kids love doing it, it's looks fun & cheerful & you can eat it - ticks all the boxes here!

UhYeahISureHopeItDoes · 20/12/2018 11:11

We make it out of chocolate. Doesn't go off and ALWAYS gets eaten Grin

Santasushi · 20/12/2018 11:13

Make it, admire for twenty seconds and eat it.

ShalomJackie · 20/12/2018 11:34

Or you can actually varnish them and save it as a decoration for subsequent years. We did that with the first one DS made but ate later ones!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/12/2018 11:38

DD2 makes one most Christmasses; it's her thing. It sits in front of the TV as a decoration and is normally polished off by new year. When the kids were little we used to make gingerbread to hang on the tree. They were scoffed pretty quickly too.
