Good absorbing gritty British crime series?

I need something to take my mind off my shitstorm of a life Grin

Loved No Offence, Unforgotten, Hidden/Craith, Hinterland etc..

Not keen on anything too far fetched so couldn't get into Killing Eve for example.

Any recommendations? Thanks Flowers

The Fall

I think it’s on Netflix

I absolutely loved it

Villanellesproudmum · 16/12/2018 15:34

Not British but enjoying The Sinned at the moment.

ChelseaBabbage · 16/12/2018 15:35

If you liked Hinterland and Shetland you'd love Vera.

Luther fans - is it very violent? I love crime but can't stand graphic violence or rape.

I’ve just started Hinterland, loving it so far - accents are amazing.

ChelseaBabbage · 16/12/2018 15:39

There was another Welsh drama with several of the same actors as Hinterland called Hidden.

ChesterGreySideboard · 16/12/2018 15:42

I watched Hinterland in Welsh (with subtitles, I’m not a Welsh speaker). I’m so annoyed it’s in English.
They filmed every scene twice once in English and once in Welsh.
Why is the English version the only on available?

Shetland and Bletchley Circle are good, although not very gritty. Also Grantchester – again, more 'cosy' (50s setting, beautiful village, disapproving housekeeper and dithering curate played slightly for laughs), but deals with surprisingly tough subjects: capital punishment, poverty, domestic violence...

Grittier is Ripper Street. Set around Whitechapel police station not long after the Jack the Ripper murders. Brilliantly detailed production design and costumes, terrific dialogue with loads of contemporary speech/slang, properly dark, grim and frightening – although with wit and humanity too – and a great portrait of just how lively, if conflicted, the London of that time was in terms of the mix of people living there. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I quite liked DCI Banks ITV but ok.
And second Line of Duty
Luther nonsense but scary nonsense
In Plain sight - a ITV 3 parter about Peter Manual was good too.

KurriKurri · 16/12/2018 16:58

Hidden was great I really enjoyed it.
If you like a bit of Scandi - the bridge is brilliant, and Modus (first series) not bad.
Spiral (French series) is good - very gritty and quite graphic.

if you like a bit of gripping real life crime then The documentary series The Staircase is really good (possibly still available on iplayer) and my DS keeps telling me to watch Making a Murderer which he says is really good.

ChesterGreySideboard · 16/12/2018 17:05

I’ve just been listening to a podcast about Peter Manual. What a scary bastard he was.

lastqueenofscotland · 16/12/2018 17:53

Happy valley
There was an excellent one set in the highlands 5/6 years ago but I can’t remember it

speakingtruthfully · 16/12/2018 18:03

Foyle's war
Police drama set during WW2 on south coast , absolutely brilliant but does involve their personal lives too

LesserofTwoWeevils · 16/12/2018 18:07

River

shelbeee · 16/12/2018 18:11

Luther
The Fall

Patroclus · 16/12/2018 19:27

If you really like Gritty, DCI Banks but its relentlessly gritty, dark and more miserable than an Eastenders funeral.

ThreeLeggedCat · 16/12/2018 19:29

The Informer.

hapagirl · 16/12/2018 19:30

River. It’s on Netflix. It really touched me.

missyB1 · 16/12/2018 19:35

Loved DCI Banks - wish they would make another series. I find Vera a bit slow. Line of duty was great I've watched every series and it always keeps you guessing. Can't bear the Scandi ones they always seem a bit weird!
Wish Lewis was still on!

TheLionQueen1 · 16/12/2018 19:35

Another vote for Luther and the Whitechapel!

Also McMafia!

Hoopla5005 · 16/12/2018 20:05

Life on Mars 100% 👍

BlackBeltInPresentWrapping · 17/12/2018 01:46

Wish Lewis was still on
I think I've seen Lewis advertised on ITV3 quite recently.

I like the retro Morse, also on ITV3.

HerbNotErb · 17/12/2018 05:54

Both BBC

TheDowagerCuntess · 17/12/2018 06:00

Are you up for a podcast instead of a crime show?

I've just spent the last 48 hours off the grid, listening to The Teacher's Pet. Real life Australian cold case that has had me unable to put down the headphones, even to go to the loo.

It's not British, but it's gripping.
