Alternatives to Quality Street and Roses etc

Right. I am sick of the piss poor disappointment that is Cadbury’s Roses. A massive tin of these used to be our festive favourites until somewhere between 5-10 years ago when the ingredients changed and they became inedible.

I still like Quality Street because they Tate like they always did (which isn’t dating much as they were never that great) but they get a bit dull. Celebrations are ‘ok’ but just don’t say Christmas like the others do, and don’t speak to me of the abomination that is Heroes.

So...are any of the own brand equivalents any good? I seem to remember trying that waitrose one’s a couple of years ago and they were ok.

(And before the chocolate snobs descend and start saying that they will only eat the finest Peruvian 80% cocoa chocolate, I am blatantly talking about big cheap tins/boxes of cheap and cheerful chocolates here. Chocolate snobbery absolutely has a place - I like some lovely quality chocolate myself sometimes, but this is not the thread for it).

I also want something like this. Brightly coloured foil wrapped chocolates with a variety of centres. But with nice chocolate and not all coffee/strawberry/orange cream.

What about Sainsbury's own? No palm oil, but do have soya.
Mini toblerones also have no palm oil, but not as many varieties of course.

M&S "big ones" are good!

I notice John Lewis are doing a "fill your own tin" quality street thing this year. Bit like pick and mix. The purple section was practically empty...that was always gonna happen!

MrsJayy · 14/12/2018 15:18

Morrisons own celebrations are lovely i got some last year

RNBrie · 14/12/2018 15:19

Agree m&s are good. Slightly more expensive than Quality Street (although it does depend on tin size and offers) but they are very similar centres. Haven't tried any other own band ones (yet!)

Snowdrifthill · 14/12/2018 15:25

You are asking the important questions indeed, We need answers! Roses and quality street are now rank. I'm off to google the M & S ones for a start.

Dowser · 14/12/2018 15:30

I’m not buying them this year

People power.

If no one buys them...they’ll get the message

Glitterbubbles · 14/12/2018 15:35

(Apologies they are now called "the big selection')

Rufus27 · 14/12/2018 15:37

Recommend Sainsbury’s equivalent. Currently £3.50 a tin.

Snowdrifthill · 14/12/2018 15:43

Ahh, " the big selection " found them. I'll buy these this year.
Thanks for the tip.

LutherRalph1 · 14/12/2018 15:51

I bought a morrisons mega mix which is £3 for a huge tub.

Dh is a bit of a brand snob and rated these

jacqattacq · 14/12/2018 18:20

Oh this is brilliant! Exactly the stuff I was looking for. I’ll go and pick some up from wherever I can and have a giant taste test this Christmas. (Tough job...)

A bloke at our local convenience store put six tins of Quality Street on the conveyor belt yesterday evening. It was all I could do to stop him.

DwangelaForever · 14/12/2018 18:29

Not a tub but dairy box is actually an amazing box of chocs!

Terramirabilis · 14/12/2018 18:31

There needs to be an exchange set up @Barbara. My top three chocolates are coffee, strawberry and orange creams. I grumpily tolerate the purple ones.

slappinthebass · 14/12/2018 19:11

Good lord, I didn't know there were alternatives! I also stopped buying Roses when they changed them all to look and taste the same, sad times. I stick with Quality street but feel bad about them being Nestle and also the Orange and strawberry creams are disgusting these days, the dark chocolate tastes gross and they are too sickly. I'll try the sainsburys ones.

slappinthebass · 14/12/2018 19:22

I can't find the Sainsbury's ones Sad

JasperRising · 14/12/2018 19:27

I quite like the big tubs of Sainsbury equivalent. They have a few different options compared with roses like chocolate fudge brownie plus the usual strawberry and orange cremes. And are only £3.50

Slapp they are in different places in different shops. In one large store near us there is a huge pile but in the far corner at the end of the I've cream aisle. In the other largeish but smaller than store 1 shop they have a few boxes on the seasonal chocolate shelf.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 14/12/2018 19:32

I can rank them for you...no really, I’m an expert

  1. Sainsbury’s
  2. Morrison’s

Having eaten both in vast quantities after feeling my mouth burn with the shitness of Roses I can assure you both are high quality scoffs.

ARandomPoster · 14/12/2018 19:53

The Sainsbury own are a real hit in our house.

MotherOfMinions · 14/12/2018 19:58

We get the Sainsbury's ones now because Roses and QS are so shit

JasperRising · 14/12/2018 19:58

I also like that Sainsbury's print the type of chocolate on the wrappers so you can easily see what you've picked out (if you haven't memorised the wrapper colours)

BackforGood · 14/12/2018 19:59

Great question.
So, to conclude we reckon both Morrisons and Sainsburys are the way to go (though 'Pick your Own' in John Lewis sounds good if you were near one).

EspressoPatronum · 14/12/2018 20:03

Thanks op, this thread is 👌
