What chocolate is actually nice e these days?

All my favourite ones don't seem to taste very chocolatey any more, even my favourite M and S ones.

I don't eat very much chocolate any more because I find it disappointing.

I really want something that tastes great for Christmas, the sort of thing you can put on the table after a big meal so you can chat and drink coffee and eat chocolates.

Suggestions please!

Aldi and Lindt.

Stoppedat1 · 14/12/2018 17:08

Booja booja is yum

Silkie2 · 14/12/2018 17:10

I love M&S milk chocolate.

Montezuma and some Lindt.
Hotel Chocolat and Godiva overrated.

CakeNinja · 14/12/2018 17:13

As soon as someone mentions Moser Roth (?) I’m leaving!
That stuff is truly disgusting, I get bought some every year from various lovely children and every year I give it a go.
It tastes powdery and artificial Shock
I like charbonel et walker and some hotel chocolat. Willies is also nice.

I like Lindt best. Dark with coconut, or orange or raspberries are my favourite. If I want milk, it has to be good old milka. Not keen on green and blacks or montezuma. Had some amazing chocolate from Pierre Marcelino as a present once but that is sooo pricey.

verite · 14/12/2018 17:15

Pierre marcolini.

Bagadverts · 14/12/2018 17:15

When Iceland own brand stopped using palm sugar I tried their chocolate and loved it, but the last couple of times I’ve been in different stores it hasn’t been there.

Fuzzyend · 14/12/2018 17:16

Another for Montezuma - proper chocolate.

Mominatrix · 14/12/2018 17:16

Rococo, Valrhona, Maison du Chocolat, Willies, and I still like Green & Blacks

Frosty66611 · 14/12/2018 17:18

What sort of chocolate do you usually like? Milk stuff like cadburys before it got ruined by Kraft? Or do you prefer darker stuff?
Lindt chocoalte is always my favourite and I love their milk bars and their white ones. Also love their dark chocolate with hazelnuts and all the Lindor truffles.

margaritasbythesea · 14/12/2018 17:40

Lots of great ideas to try. Thanks.

If chocolate you can buy in the supermarket. I like Lindt. That's what triggered my post today. I tried a caramel bar today as a treat and it was tasteless. I'm glad to know that the normal ones are still good.

Leonidas are my absolute favourites ever. In not sure where I could buy them from though, or if I could afford them.

I have been on a hunt recently and found a load of recommendations which I have been working through.
Mostly tried milk choc options as that is what I was after so can’t comment on dark.
Tried love cocoa - too bland and expensive.
Montezuma milk choc buttons - very each and unpleasant - was surprised after all the love
Aldi/Lidl - too sickly
Ikea- ok- little bit cheap/sugary

Anyway finally settled on Willy’s cacao milk of the gods. A lovely strong relatively dark milk chocolate, packed with flavour, not waxy. Not cheap either but suppose that is to be expected.

Bodicea · 14/12/2018 17:45
  • montezuma - very Waxy
rosybell · 14/12/2018 17:47

Has anyone tried Waitrose own? Brought a box of their Christmas selection today in the hope it will be nice- I will report back!

margaritasbythesea · 14/12/2018 18:34

There are still a few in Marks not made with palm oil which I have bought as presents. I hold out hope for them.

Thanks for your rundown

One word.... Lindor

Thymeout · 14/12/2018 18:50

If high end is too expensive, try Lidl. Their milk chocolate is darker than Cadbury's etc and doesn't use palm oil. My favourite is their Turkish delight - Mister Choc. Slimline, not as chunky as other filled blocks, snaps crisply into squares which melt on your tongue leaving a wafer of rose-scented filling.

margaritasbythesea · 14/12/2018 19:07

Sound lovely!

The monty bojangles truffles are SO good. And TK Maxx had them in last week

goose1964 · 14/12/2018 19:26

Tesco own brand, no palm oil, both the mint and orange dark ones

YouSetTheTone · 14/12/2018 19:50

Lindt dark chocolate with salted caramel is lovely. I’m pregnant and it’s my it’s-the-weekend treat. I have two squares up in bed while I’m reading.
Hotel du Chocolat is possibly slightly overrated but it’s still pretty good compared to a lot of things out there. At work we’ve been sent loads of their selection boxes for Xmas and they are a nice treat. The ‘choc brownie’ and champagne truffle chocs are partic delish (IMO!)

I don’t like Montezumas or Willy Wonker (?) as I find them a bit bitter but DH likes them.

I think Terrys choc oranges are still just about ok aren’t they?! (Hope so as we’re all getting one in stockings... DH gets the dark one though).

LittleLlamaontheduskyroad · 14/12/2018 20:16

Ritter Sport is delicious. You can get mini ones from Amazon so you could put them out like you do with a tin of Roses etc.

madmum5811 · 14/12/2018 20:19

Tried Co-op fair trade a while ago that was nice. Aldi and Lidl do some lovely dark chocolates.

We have a chocolatier shop locally now they are divine.
