How much do you spend on your child's friend's birthday gift if invited to a party?

My son is 3 and regularly gets invitations from other kids in his nursery class for birthday parties.

How much do you spend on the gift?

I've been spending just shy of £20, but starting to think this is too much.

I would usually spend about £10

wendz86 · 13/12/2018 11:59

About 5-8 pounds normally.

TeenTimesTwo · 13/12/2018 12:00

Way too much!

I would say £5 or so - £8 max if you really like the DC.

When it gets to juniors and just a few select friends then £8-£10.

About £10

SailorGirl3 · 13/12/2018 12:00

I tend to spend between £5 &£10 per child (only more of it is a close friend). B&M tend to do a good range of toys. Argos 3 for 2, or the Entertainer. I always stock up when I see a good deal and keep a few potential gifts stored away

Youngandfree · 13/12/2018 12:01

Max €10

Starface · 13/12/2018 12:02

£10 Is roughly the budget although I try hard to get £10 bits for less when I see them so it is actually about £8 probably.

theconstantinoplegardener · 13/12/2018 12:03

Gosh, you're generous! I usually spend about £10 but I know lots of families who spend £5. It does get expensive, especially in the first couple of years of primary school when most people do whole-class parties and there seems to be one every other weekend.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 13/12/2018 12:05

£10 usually
Sometimes a couple of quid more if panic-buying with limited choice on the way back from work.

Twickerhun · 13/12/2018 12:05

Under £10 - depends a bit on the child. If you know there is something they would love then it’s a bit different to buying yet another generic gift

HopeGarden · 13/12/2018 12:05

Usually around £10.

I tend to keep an eye out for good deals, e.g. toys reduced to clear or places like TKMaxx, to make the £10 go further.

FissionChips · 13/12/2018 12:05

£5.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 13/12/2018 12:06

£5 to £10 is plenty. At that age it’s also worth stocking up on things when you find a bargain and having a present drawer of things ready to go. I remember the year Boots had Hello Kitty puzzle balls reduced down to £2 post Christmas, I cleaned them out and every little girl whose birthday party DD went to got one.

Perfectly1mperfect · 13/12/2018 12:06

At that age, about £10. Now mine are older between £10 and £20 depending on how close a friend they are.

When my children have had parties, I would say people have spent between £2 and £20 so I wouldn't worry too much. My kids always enjoyed the party more than the presents as they had already got the things they wanted from us and family, so these presents from friends were just a bonus.

WerewolfNumber1 · 13/12/2018 12:06

Up to £10.

ADastardlyThing · 13/12/2018 12:11

A fiver

10PollyPockets · 13/12/2018 12:11

£10 is the norm here, I would only spend £20 on my child's best friend. I agree with the idea above to stock up. If your child goes to a lot of parties and you see a toy reduced to a very low price grab a few and put them away.

RedSkyLastNight · 13/12/2018 12:14

At nursery it was about £5. For infants it was probably £5-£8. By upper junior it tended to be closer friends only so I went to £10 (£15 for very close friends).
I think this could be very area and school dependent though. My DC went to their cousins party and all the presents were more around the £20 mark.

Batteriesallgone · 13/12/2018 12:16

About £5, but I usually buy books and get them from the book people in bulk so a little goes a long way. We have a drawer of emergency presents and cards - got a big folder of 50 cards from amazon think it was £3. That will keep us going a while haha.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 13/12/2018 12:21

I just put a fiver in a card. I've no idea what toys the child already has so I'd rather just give the money.

Pascha · 13/12/2018 12:22

I tend to get stuff in places like The Works 2 for £10 or similar. or regift tat my children have received

FlamingoMingo · 13/12/2018 12:33

I tend to spend about £8 per present (I have twins so always take two presents) but try to buy things that are on offer and therefore more in the £10-15 mark at full price.

FuckingYuleLog · 13/12/2018 13:32

I’d spend that on a best friend but usually spend about in total on present and wrap or put a tenner in a card if they’re older.

Workreturner · 13/12/2018 13:37

Close friend £15
Otherwise £8-10

madmum5811 · 13/12/2018 13:42

Money in a card every time.
