Pizza for Christmas Dinner!

strawberrisc · 12/12/2018 06:25

My friend and her daughter have never been into roast dinner so they’re having pizza for Christmas.

I’ve always envisaged the whole of the land gorging on Turkey, sprouts etc on 25th December which now I think about it is ridiculous. Does anyone else have a totally non-traditional Christmas dinner?

Slightly different but I have friends who have a full Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve and spend Christmas Day leisurely opening presents, watching tv and eating left overs, sounds amazing but I've never done it myself.

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/12/2018 06:28

We're having Chinese Takeaway this year.

TanteRose · 12/12/2018 06:31

Here in Japan, the "traditional" Xmas meal is KFC, or variants of fried chicken! Plus strawberry sponge cake Grin

I always cooked a British Xmas dinner (including sprouts, gravy, white sauce...the works!) but my DCs would always say "why can't we have KFC like everyone else?" Confused

We have going day spread on Christmas day and then dinner on boxing day. Changed my life!! The kids get to open their presents and actually have time to play with them.

hidinginthenightgarden · 12/12/2018 06:55

We have had a curry once.
This year we are getting M&S party foods and having a buffet. Kids don't really like roast so I don't see the point.

We sometimes have our Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve and then go hiking with Turkey sandwiches and mince pies on the day itself.

My dream celebration dinner is a big seafood platter but I don't want to miss out on a roast so despite me wanting to make it very simple this year (just me and DP staying at home) it's likely we will have the roast but have the seafood buffet at another time - but I am going to get some of the sides ready made to lighten the load a little.

strawberrisc · 12/12/2018 07:06

I love Turkey, sprouts, chestnuts etc and every year I think “I need to eat these throughout the year” but I still only ever have them on Christmas Day!

Many years ago my, then, DP and I had invited our best friends round for Christmas Day. The DW didn't eat meat or poultry, so a roast was out of the question. I did a smoked salmon starter, we then had cheese fondue as the main and Christmas pudding to finish!

Aragog · 12/12/2018 07:32

We went for a curry with friends last year and we are doing it again this year. The teenagers love it. We go around 5pm having spent a lazy day opening gifts etc. We do family things on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.

Once got invited to friends house for Christmas Day, one year when my parents were abroad. They were having a Chinese take away instead of traditional lunch. In theory I loved the idea, how hassle free! But on the day it was just a bit rubbish and didn't feel like Christmas at all. Although I was very touched that they had invited us to spend the day with them, don't think I'd want to on Xmas again.

DP is cooking a selection of our favourite curries this year - really looking forward to it for a change

GreenandBlueButterfly · 12/12/2018 08:05

Last year we had monk fish. The year before we had tortellini.

We normally open the presents on 24th in the evening, and spend 25th leisurely doing NOTHING

bookmum08 · 12/12/2018 08:07

I love pizza. I would get a nice fancy one with cheesy garlic bread and a salad and cola followed by a nice pudding of cheesecake. Perfect meal. I wouldn't do takeaway though because I would feel awful that I am making people work on Christmas Day.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 12/12/2018 08:17

We've done Chinese before. I don't see why anyone would feel bad about it. The Chinese takeaway we used is run by people who do not celebrate Christmas. They are working the same as if it was any other day, much like many other professions. We also gave them a pretty hefty tip for the convenience of not having to cook dinner so I would imagine they were only too happy they had not closed.

PipGoesPop · 12/12/2018 08:36

KFC is open on Christmas Day in Japan? Shock

Chinese takeaway open on Christmas Day. In th UK? Shock

LuckyAmy1986 · 12/12/2018 08:48

I was going to say sbout KFC being the tradition in Japan! Although the one year we were there for it the queues were too big so we went McDS instead!

ChocolateTearDrops · 12/12/2018 08:51

We did egg and chips one year. Lovely but I felt afterwards that I had missed something.

BagofTeeth · 12/12/2018 08:58

We always have a big cooked (by me) meal but it's very rarely got a hint of turkey to it. It's more a time to spoil ourselves with food we would never normally have. I used to work in a Chinese takeaway and I was surprised at the number of people who used them on Christmas Day (until I had kids I was happy to work Christmas Eve every year and that was really popular too.)

caperplips · 12/12/2018 10:26

I know it happens, but I just can't imagine not having a traditional Christmas dinner! It is our favourite dinner of the year!

Having said that one year we were in NY and had room service cheeseburgers as the hotel we were staying in has a very famous burger joint in it - they were incredible!

TanteRose · 12/12/2018 10:50

Pip Christmas Day isn’t a holiday in Japan - everyone just goes to work as normal - not being a Christian country ‘n all Wink
They celebrate it, like Halloween or Valentine’s Day, with food and gifts for children and maybe boyfriend/girlfriends...adults don’t get presents.
Japan celebrates New Year like our Xmas, with family getting together and a big traditional meal.

AviatorShades · 12/12/2018 11:02

First year after DH had died was a tricky one for us, so we had a day doing our favourite things, mostly sport related - and eating our favourite foods. Shellfish was a winner for us both, as was.....spinach Grin. Ds chose a sirloin steak for afters, I had trout.
Then we got stuck into the tin of Quality Street..(back in the days when tins of QS were huge, not like the piddly little things they are now)..

Next year, tho, it was all change. Who knew that pubs were open on Christmas Day? And ours gave free tots of whisky to the 'locals'.so we got merry with the local builder, the window cleaner and the bloke who comes to rod the drains on occasions..so after getting nicely tanked up with them, we staggered off home singing Jingle Bells, ate some cheese and olives, and snoozed in front of the tele...

This year? Ds and new family live in the US, friends round here will be with their families, so I'll still be eating my fave foods, and yes, shellfish and spinach will feature, and I'm starting a new book. It'll be grandSmile

NotACleverName · 12/12/2018 11:09

Pizza or fried chicken sounds like my kinda Christmas dinner. I'm not a fan of roast dinners at all.

ChristmasRaven · 12/12/2018 11:14

Allice We do the same as your friends. It started when the kids were little and it was too much for them on Christmas Day, when they were over excited and stuffed with sweets, to eat their dinner. It works out sooo much better and I get to relax on Christmas day.

I spent Christmas in Japan once. I was there for a few months and my DC (adults) were joining me for Christmas. I actually filled out a form at KFC a few weeks prior to Christmas Day to ensure we got our dinner! It gave us a specific time slot to go and collect it. We then sat on the floor at my place, bottle of wine etc. It was really good fun. I got a decorative plate too! I'll post a pic Grin

FrostyMoanyWind · 12/12/2018 11:20

We let the DC choose. We've had spaghetti and Tom sauce, picnic, pizza before. We've never had a roast since having DC. our house is also closed, just DC, DH and me on C Day, Noone else invited!

ChristmasRaven · 12/12/2018 11:21
