Pizza for Christmas Dinner!

strawberrisc · 12/12/2018 06:25

My friend and her daughter have never been into roast dinner so they’re having pizza for Christmas.

I’ve always envisaged the whole of the land gorging on Turkey, sprouts etc on 25th December which now I think about it is ridiculous. Does anyone else have a totally non-traditional Christmas dinner?

We didn't have our Christmas Dinner until the day after Boxing Day last year and it made Christmas Day a bit weird and just like a normal day.
My kids would probably prefer pizza or lasagne though.

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 12/12/2018 17:14

Christmas 2006, I was a single mum to my then 5 year old dd, was paid wages by weekly cheque, had absolutely skinted myself sorting christmas. Was waiting on cheque clearing christmas eve, getting shopping and topping up gas and electric. Cheque didnt clear in time, so christmas dinner was pizza and ice cream- we used the nice plates, had pigs in blankets on the side, pretty napkins and crackers. Was quite nice still.

We're having Mexican this Christmas!

showmethegin · 12/12/2018 17:44

@Kezzie200 love that idea! DP and in-laws so traditional though. One can dream!

queribus · 12/12/2018 17:49

Burger and chips in the pub here

Ollivander84 · 12/12/2018 17:50

Yup
I've previously had
Pizza
McDonald's
Morrisons extra special sausage and mash

Actually I need to decide what to have this year! Suggestions welcome Grin

I'm hoping Minipie leads a revolt at her home and serves the delicious sounding antipasti spread followed by pasta. I am sure she wont mind a few extra at the table. Halo

Ollivander84 · 12/12/2018 17:54

@HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone sadly I'm working! So it will need to be something quick at home

MiddlingMum · 12/12/2018 18:01

Best Christmas lunch we ever had was sandwiches and a mince pie. Eaten on the top of a mountain.

Sometimes we have a fairly normal (albeit vegan) meal, but pizza has featured more than once. A dead animal has never featured.

HRTpatch · 12/12/2018 18:03

I have never cooked a traditional Xmas dinner and I am nearly 60.
This year is antipasti and a lot of champagne

Bowchicawowow · 12/12/2018 18:03

Do the people who have egg and chips or pizza for Christmas dinner otherwise celebrate the day? Do you bother with decorations and presents or is it just another day as far as you are concerned?

Ollivander84 · 12/12/2018 18:05

@Bowchicawowow I get presents but I don't decorate. I'm working so it's just another day really

EssentialHummus · 12/12/2018 18:06

We’re jewish and have Chinese food on Christmas Day.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 12/12/2018 18:08

Bowchic - Of course I still do decorations, gifts and enjoy the day the same as everyone else I know. I just don't see the point doing a Christmas dinner for 2 people when neither of us really enjoys roast dinners. I find it quizzical that you assume it's just another day simply because people don't eat the food which is considered traditional?

Olivander - what about a warming shepherds pie or a nice hearty curry with accompanying sides and a classic naan or poppadum, or maybe both it is Christmas after all Xmas Grin

Bowchicawowow · 12/12/2018 18:11

Heads I can understand people eating what they fancy, ie not necessarily turkey dinner, which they wouldn’t eat ordinarily but I can’t understand why adults who are not working would eat pizza on Christmas Day.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 12/12/2018 18:15

I can understand people eating what they fancy...but I can’t understand why adults who are not working would eat pizza on Christmas Day.

Maybe they fancy eating a pizza? Food is food, if you enjoy it and it makes you happy then who am I to judge? Whether you are working on the day or not isn't Christmas about being happy and having a nice day with your loved ones?

adoggymum · 12/12/2018 18:15

I don't like Christmas dinner (or roast dinners!) and would happily have a nice homemade pizza and salad- but my family love it!😩

Bowchicawowow · 12/12/2018 18:17

Food is food? It really isn’t though. Pizza is the shit you shove in the oven when you can’t be arsed to cook Confused

redgreentrees · 12/12/2018 18:19

Our family go away to a different country every year. We’ve had: afternoon tea in the ritz in our room after they were fully booked for the gala dinner, Italian in Dubai with no alcohol as they only serve it in hotels, Hawaiian pizza in Hawaii. It’s almost got to the point where it’s tradition not to eat ‘Christmas dinner’

our dc have only had one traditional Christmas dinner in their albeit short lives (primary age)

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 12/12/2018 18:21

Pizza is the shit you shove in the oven when you can’t be arsed to cook

Maybe loosen those judgy pants a touch and try a proper homemade Italian style pizza and you will truly see how silly that comment sounds. Hmm

Food is indeed food one is not worthier than the other just because it is what is traditionally eaten. If you like Christmas dinner as a roast then that is fine but why judge others who make different choices?

Flooffloof · 12/12/2018 18:21

but I can’t understand why adults who are not working would eat pizza on Christmas Day

I haven't done this yet, but glad it's not 'out there's
Is cheap, it's quick, it's easy, you can have any toppings, minimal washing up,
I do all the sides but then steak or the like.
Really fancy Chinese now though. All the local takeaways are open Christmas day here, all run by people that don't do Christmas.

Flooffloof · 12/12/2018 18:23

Pizza is the shit you shove in the oven when you can’t be arsed to cook

Oh cook it yourself huh? I woulda got takeaway pizza, have a fabulous pizza place that delivers nearby.

Bowchicawowow · 12/12/2018 18:24

I have tried plenty of homemade Italian style pizzas and I still think it would be miserable to eat that on Christmas Day.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 12/12/2018 18:27

I still think it would be miserable to eat that on Christmas Day.

Which is fine, that's your opinion. However, to outright assume people who would make this choice are just shoving shit in the oven because they cant be arsed is nothing short of ignorant.

It may surprise you that many would be miserable if faced with a full traditional roast Christmas dinner. Isn't it lovely how the world a wonderfully diverse place.
