Two trivial questions that came up this afternoon...

Can I do a quick poll? Two unconnected questions that I was surprised by a friend's opinions on

  1. Is it discourteous to overtake a funeral on a dual carriageway?
  2. Could you access £1000 instantly, use it and it make no difference to your day to day life?

Is the funeral going from Durham to Kent?

ChocolateTearDrops · 11/12/2018 18:55

Yes and yes.

  1. Dunno. Probably ok on a duel carriageway as long as it's long enough that you don't risk having to pull in mid convoy.
  2. Yes.

  1. No. The living heave lives to get on with. I wouldn’t expect them to crawl along behind my/a loved ones casket.
  1. Most of the time but sometimes we do that one too many times and don’t have the grand spare.
TeenTimesTwo · 11/12/2018 18:56
  1. Not ideal, but if they are trekking 50miles up the A1 it isn't unreasonable
  1. Yes (but I wouldn't without a lot of thought)
Bestseller · 11/12/2018 18:56
  1. No (very in any other circumstance but not passing a cortege on a motorway would cause havoc)

2.Yes

  1. Historically it has been viewed as being discourteous to overtake a funeral, but if one is traveling miles, it isn't always practical. I think it is a 'judge at the time' situation.
  1. Now, at this time of my life, yes, I could. For most of my life, no, I couldn't have.

  1. No on a dual carriageway if they were travelling significantly below the speed limit. Yes on a single carriageway.

Rude to overtake funeral on single carrigeway, but OK on dual

Leeds2 · 11/12/2018 18:59

Yes, and probably.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 11/12/2018 18:59
  1. No. As long as you don’t end up in the middle of it.
  2. No.
SalmonLeBon · 11/12/2018 19:00
  1. No. It would cause chaos if people all stayed behind a hearse for miles down a dual carriageway.
  1. Yes.

Yes and yes.

  1. On a dual carriageway, OK. Do realise that the cars in the cortège will not want you cutting in, so make sure you don't do it near a junction where you want to exit. No overtaking on single carriageways though.
  1. Yes and yes (access and use) but no, I would notice the difference (because a: if spending that much I'd want something to show for it and b: the opportunity cost wouid mean delaying, changing or going without something else

  1. If there's two lanes for a long time period and it's NSL, then I think it's ok to overtake, but not to pull in between cars. If no-one overtakes, eventually you'll get a long enough queue that someone won't see the hearse and will pass anyway. Ideally, I think funeral corteges should avoid dual carriageways as they can represent a bit of a hazard- but obviously this isn't always possible.
  1. I could access it, if I needed to for an unexpected bill or similar, but I can't think how it would not make a difference to my life. Either I am spending it on a luxury- which I would certainly notice for £1000 or I'm spending it on an essential cost (e.g. my car). Short term, I suppose I wouldn't notice the dip in my savings as such, but I couldn't do it lots (or I'd have no savings) and it would take me longer to get to my savings goal (for a house deposit), obviously, so I would notice it that way too.
Disfordarkchocolate · 11/12/2018 19:16
  1. No, not on a dual carriageway.
  2. Yes but I'd rather not.
