Ideas for fun things to do in life

Deminism · 10/12/2018 15:09

My friends and I are putting together a list of fifty fun things to do before we are fifty. Nothing expensive. Things like swim off the English coast, dance all nught, learn to make cocktails, etc. Any ideas? All thoughts appreciated. X

justilou1 · 11/12/2018 23:01

@Ravenesque - there is a place in Germany where you can feed baby wolves, too. I'm going to make a visit from Australia especially when they have some just to do it. I'm going to book in the place in the Lake District as well, now I know about it!!! Can't imagine anything more divine!!!

Heresme33 · 11/12/2018 23:05

Wish I had friends to do things like this.....mine just like to sit around and drink and gossip all the time....meh been too many years think I have outgrew them 🙁

Ravenesque · 11/12/2018 23:07

Oh wow, @justilou1! I want to go there too! It's lovely to "meet" someone who shares my wolf passion Smile

FadedRed · 11/12/2018 23:19

Go to Grindelwald in Switzerland in the winter. 8km toboggan runs (there actually a 15km run if you fancy the three hour walk up the mountain first). There’s a ‘flyer’ zip wire, mountain railway to the highest station in Europe with glacier walk and ice caves carved into the glacier. You can go snow-shoeing. There’s a village nearby with a cable at up to the top of the Schilthorn peak where there is a revolving restaurant and a ‘sky-walk’ with a glass floor.
You can do most of this in the summer, except for the snow related activities, so winter is best time to go.
Whale watching is amazing.
Watching live motor racing is also a great day, if you’ve never done it before, especially Formula One or the Historical Events like Goodwood or Donnington Classic.

@Ravenesque & @justilou1 Another wolf lover here Smile

I'm in Australia too and am definitely going to add the walking with wolves experience to my itinerary on my next trip home to the UK. Feeding baby wolves would be DD's idea of heaven, so might have to try and include that too Smile

Cantthinkofabloodyname · 12/12/2018 00:41

@Bloodybridget that looks amazing. We used to stay at a caravan park a 10 minute drive from there. Machynlleth is a lovely part of the world.

SandAndSea · 12/12/2018 02:02

I love the birthday party idea. I would love it even more in a blanket fort with twinkle lights.

I'm also a wolf lover.

1forAll74 · 12/12/2018 04:10

I don't suppose this comes under Fun, but would love to conquer my absolute fear of flying.. I used to fly years ago, but one very bad experience did it for me, as in the 1980 era

NO 2 . i would like to take over from Nick Knowles, when at the end of Big Build programme, he shows the people round the super new house that has been created.especially the people who are very disabled,

SisterMortificado · 12/12/2018 05:43

-Investigate the history of your area- go on history walks, etc.

-Go to a re-enactment battle

-Two friends and I go to a different restaurant for dinner once a month. Not posh ones, but hole-in-the-wall locals.

-Acquire a pen pal and send each other hand-written letters

-Attend Dawn Service on Remembrance Day, and if you like ANZAC Day

-Travel from Land's End to John O'Groats entirely by public transport.

brizzledrizzle · 12/12/2018 06:56

The three peaks - not necessarily in 24 hours
Go to the arctic circle and/or Antarctica
stop and help somebody who needs help
choose a charity to fund raise for
do some voluntary work
stop saving things for best - use them and enjoy them
do something kind for yourself and somebody else every day
have a night in a hotel with your DC and have a no phones rule - really talk to each other
make chocolate from scratch - it's fun, messy and easy
challenge yourself to learn a new skill
believe in yourself
consider a career change
make a thankful journal - it doesn't have to be a big deal; i have a word document and put one good thing in there each day.

brizzledrizzle · 12/12/2018 06:58

@heresme33 you can do them without your friends. I had the holiday of a lifetime just after I was 50 and went on my own with the DCs - it was a fantastic experience.

CaraCarbonara · 12/12/2018 07:13

OP - how old are you now? I don't understand why you have to do all these things before you're 50. Not trying to spoil a fun thread btw - just curious.

RainyAfternoon · 12/12/2018 07:23

Host a dinner party in the middle of the countryside.

Have a race in teams via public transport to a random place in Europe or the UK.

Do the Beaujolais run.

SaveKevin · 12/12/2018 09:54

@ravenesque if it’s the amazing place in reading I’m really sorry they’ve closed their doors to the public. I never went on the walk with wolves day but I did a few of their howl nights and events. They were amazing and beautiful. I always wanted to do the walk but ran out of time.

wanderings · 12/12/2018 10:03

Here's an activity which I love doing - a kind of escape room challenge, needing lots of detective work. You need a trusted friend to drive you somewhere: you can't hear where you are going because you have headphones with music, and you can't see where because you are blindfolded. No peeping allowed!

When you arrive, your friend should leave you to work out where you are, and to find your own way home. No maps or Google allowed - just a basic mobile phone for if you need help, and money for travelling.

I love the gradual discovery of working out where I am; if I've been left in a modern housing suburb, it can be difficult to tell even which town it is! I might not have a clue until I find a bus stop, which might lead to a place I know how to get home from. There's a thrill of suddenly seeing something I recognise. Take photos of the clues which lead you to work out where you are.

ferntwist · 13/12/2018 01:22

These are so good!

OneStepMoreFun · 13/12/2018 18:04

@CaraCarbonara I think the idea is that if you put a time frame on them and turn it into a sort of competition with yourself: fifty things to do before I turn fifty, then you actually do them instead of sitting around thinking you'll do them. And it also helps you feel perky and enthusiastic about life at a time lots of women find hard due to hormone swings, extra weight, anxiety etc caused by peri/menopause.

VittysCardigan · 13/12/2018 18:57

I've thought of another one!

Get my 4 DC to send me a selfie everyday (they range in age from 30 - 11!) Be great if DD1 sends pic of DGS too!
